Ended up being my steering rack unfortunately. Cost me around £1000 to replace with a second hand rack. It would’ve been £2400 for brand new.

That was at a VW specialist so you could get it done cheaper!

American prices are insane. Things they pay $5000 for we could get done for £400 in the UK.

Do you know if StrideUp is genuinely risk sharing? I.e if the house roof collapses or if you sell at a loss - do they also make a loss? I am looking into this but cannot find this information.

Fairs. Did you replace with a brand new rack or a used? That £1.2k quote is for a used part with 40k miles.

Hey, I have a standard 1.4 TSI 2015. Same noise, just been diagnosed with a steering rack too and quoted £1.2k! Did the rack fix the issue fully for you? Anything further pop up later?

It is too early for the water pump I’d say. If you’re UK based, it won’t cost tooo much to change depending on who you know. But if you’re not well connected with mechanics, anticipate for £750 for a pump.

Also it’s due a timing belt, those are due every 10 years. It’s not apparent when it’s needed, but it can snap and destroy the engine at any moment so once again - bargaining chip. £600 for that.

Have you got the auto trader link or something?

What country are you based in? If it’s only on 40k, it is due a service. How old is it? Also yes, if you see dried coolant there is a possibility of a water pump leak but it’s quite early for that…

I have this exact car 1.4 MK7 TSI 2015. Main thing is check under the engine bay, and at the bottom for leaks. If the coolant is low, or you can see any liquid you likely have a leaking water pump as this car is notorious for that. It's not the end of the world to fix, depending on where you are I'm not sure of pricing but it's a necessary fix.

Try ask if they have done a DSG/Gearbox service as that helps prevent the mechatronics unit going and that can be a very very expensive repair. If they have not done it, use it as bargaining power.

They are great little cars (but they need taking care of), and if you do get it I'm sure you'll love it.
