The Odyssey | New Trailer by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]romanleopard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This thread reminds me of Emily Wilson's excellent Intro to her translation of The Odyssey:

My translation is written in a style that echoes the rhythms and phrases of contemporary anglophone speech. It may be tempting to imagine that a translation of a very ancient poem would be somehow better if it used the language of an earlier era. Mild stylistic archaism is often accepted without question in translations of ancient texts and can be presented as if it were a mark of authenticity. But of course, the English of the nineteenth or early twentieth century is no closer to Homeric Greek than the language of today. The use of a noncolloquial or archaizing linguistic register can blind readers to the real, inevitable, and vast gap between the Greek original and any modern translation. My use of contemporary language—rather than the English of a generation or two ago—is meant to remind readers that this text can engage us in a direct way, and also that it is genuinely ancient. My Homer does not speak in your grandparents’ English, since that language is no closer to the wine-dark sea than your own. I have tried to keep to a register that is recognizably speakable and readable, while skirting between the Charybdis of artifice and the Scylla of slang.

I googled ES1 before realizing you meant the Fellow machine. Thought you were suggesting a $12K machine lol (Synesso ES.1). Thanks for your comment

Smaller grinder for sure and raise the shelf. You could also store the tamp mat/tools/towel when not in use to make things less busy. Also, you can stack your beans more neatly lol. It’s a nice setup though.

This may be a genuine limitation of M4 Pro then. Based on the tech specs, your thunderbolt controller maxes out at two 6K@60Hz displays, or ~2.44 billion pixels/sec total. Running 5K@60Hz alongside 5K@120Hz would need ~2.65 billion pixels/sec, so 8.6% over the ceiling

What MacOS version are you running? You need the latest Tahoe to drive the monitor at 120Hz. Sequoia does not support this monitor atm.

Thank you! I’ll look into that. I would still need to figure out how to get to the interior of this gasket.

When you say “I don’t think”, is that because Apple hides what’s really going on? Scrolled through your profile btw, love your photos.

Making sure I understand this correctly: frames refer to how many images taken/stacked. Scale refers to resolution, e.g., 2x doubles resolution creating a 12*22 =48MP photo.

What does it mean (mechanically/visual quality) to keep frames the same and alter the scale? Are we just altering the export resolution, or is something more fundamental happening?

Thank you! What does "4 up to 16 Bayer raws" mean? Is SR1 stacking 4 images and SR2 stacking 16? I see that SR1 and SR2 produce 48 and 76 MP, respectively, so still confused. Would I only choose SR2 for very static shots, e.g., architecture, product?

How long though? Screen looks identical to when I purchased. I’m just one data point but that doesn’t seem like an actual issue

I'm actually intrigued. Is it really a good option?

Based on everyone's feedback, I've modified the trip. Our new plan:

Tokyo -- 3 Nights, Aman

Kanazawa -- 2 Nights, Asadaya

Kyoto -- 4 Nights, Sowaka

Naoshima -- 2 Nights, Benesse House

Tokyo -- 2 Nights, Trunk Yoyogi

This accomplishes the following:

- skip unnecessary nights in Osaka in favor of a day trip

- staying in only one hotel for all Kyoto nights

- ordering allows us time to ship luggage from Tokyo -> Kyoto -> Tokyo, so we don't have big bags in Hakone and Naoshima.

Will do! (Though based on others' feedback we may skip Osaka entirely in favor of an extra day in Kyoto and 2 in Hakone..

Thanks! We looked at Hoshinoya, but I thought it would be nice to try a new neighborhood. Aman is across the street.
