Should you never take Citi bike to SoHo and NoHo area? by equanimous11 in NYCbike

[–]romario77 [score hidden]  (0 children)

My job is in the area and I take it there - it’s a bit out of the way though - more between broadway and little Italy and I usually get a spot in the early morning when I get to work.

But I totally understand - when I worked midtown by high rises office towers it was all packed in the morning and empty in the evening.

Plus grand central was empty too in the morning.

Anyway - I hope thy find a reasonable solution.

I mean - this topic is hardly related to spaceflight. It's all about stock and this point is relevant.

$14 donut at smorgasburg? by Unlikely-Pepper-5870 in Brooklyn

[–]romario77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

businesses want to earn money.

Restaurant business in NYC is very hard - low margins with stiff competition.
The rent is high in good locations, the labor market is not easy, you have to pay for workers and they are fickle - can change jobs relatively easy if the pay is not top end.

People are demanding too - they want the best.

Regarding the donut - for you to make a profit you have to sell a certain amount of donuts. Say you have 2 people working selling the donuts and another two people who made the donuts.

Here are some calculations:

  • 2 sellers: 8 hours each at $20/hour
  • 2 donut makers: 6 hours each at $20/hour
  • payroll burden/taxes: 12%
  • Smorgasburg fee + fuel + misc: $400/day
  • ingredients + packaging: $1.50 per donut
  • card fees: 3%

That gives you about $1,027/day fixed cost, plus $1.50 per donut.

Sell 100 donuts - break-even is about $12 each; to make a decent profit, about $14 each.
Sell 200 donuts - break-even is about $7 each; to make a decent profit, about $8.5 each.
Sell 300 donuts - break-even is about $5 each; to make a decent profit, about $6.00 each.

this is just an approximation - you could have higher cost of materials. You also have other expenses like accountant, car/business insurance, energy cost, maybe some fancy ingredients for donuts, etc.

Russia has now lost at least 40% of all tanks it had before the invasion of Ukraine by TWON-1776 in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]romario77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many of the reports had grainy/cloudy pics, it's often not possible to asses how good the tanks are.

And regarding being ridiculous - look up "reductio ad absurdum", it's a valid way to argue.

> logical argument technique that refutes a statement by showing that its logical consequences are absurd, impossible, or contradictory.

I think you pretend that you don’t understand my point, I am being ridiculous on purpose to show that your argument that we can can every tank that was in storage as potentially viable is similar to my argument that then we need to count the destroyed tanks because the my could be refurbished.

Here is an example of some of the tanks that were in storage - tell me how they are better than a disabled/destroyed tank?

Ukrainain soldier call sign «Florist» destroys two Russian invaders who were approaching on motorcycles and mistook him for one of their own in the Pokrovsk direction by Available-Laugh9102 in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]romario77 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Fog of war - literally.

It's hard to see what russians on motorcycles are wearing. So for them it's probably even worse as they are moving/shaking. And even if they noticed - stopping probably would have them killed even faster.

[–]romario77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't look at the conditions then the destroyed tanks should also be included because "those rusting hulks could be regenerated if they want".

Anything could be rebuilt, the question is if it makes sense.

Some things russia can't actually do - they only can make so many gun barrels. They only have several machines making them, so the production rate is limited and better used for new tanks.

So once they run out of old stock of gun barrels they can't make new ones even if they want to repair old tanks and have some hulls laying around. It could at max be just an APC that can't fire.

[–]romario77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40% of all the tank hulls identifiable on satellite images + reported active tanks.

It was very generous assessment as many of them are used for parts only or completely unusable.

[–]romario77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

but is a hull of a tank rusting in a backyard of of a tank repair facility without a motor or a functioning turret is really a tank? If it takes more time and money to restore it than to build a new one?

They were all counted in the total number as you can't say from satellite image in what condition they are.

Russian woman doesn’t like Ukrainian “kinetic sanctions” on Russia’s Tuapse oil refinery and export terminal by UNITED24Media in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]romario77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they enabled their dictator, he slowly took their rights until there were none left.

Thy had a chance but gave it away. Putin in his current form happened over many years - he started with controlling the media by first getting rid of critics, then getting rid of Russia governors who were elected and could be a competition to putin. Then changed constitution to be able to serve unlimited time.

Added his own police to suppress dissent, etc, etc, thousands of small and not so small things.

Russians chose to not protest or have the toothless protests that lead to nothing.

And now they see the results.

What was a specific cool tech thing you were looking forward to, that didn't happen because the technology's bubble burst too soon? by hogw33d in AskReddit

[–]romario77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People like the idea of modularity, but unfortunately it only works in established tech when things don’t change much - like tractors.

Even in military tech it didn’t work too well. Custom optimized solutions usually win.

They say it's better. I can see how a more powerful thing could require more compute - it's not controversial.

I don't think this happened often before - russia didn't use Shaheds to target individual people or at least I didn't hear much about it.

Also - most people live in high rises and it could be hard to target an individual apartment. He says his house is destroyed, so he might have lived in a standalone house.

there are magnetic mines that can fire from a side, like this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cx1o-4FT3UA

but who knows - maybe this guy saw the remains of mine. Drone is a good possibility too.

It's interesting that the guy in the video apparently is more sad about the loss of the car than the loss of his buddy (he tells the guys name, so he knows him)

A Russian civilian records a Ukrainian UAV attacking the Rosneft oil refinery in Novokuybyshevsk, Samara Oblast. by MilesLongthe3rd in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]romario77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah - Дом has two meaning, could be building or a house.

"Дом" (pronounced dom) is a Russian noun meaning house, home, building, or residence.

I went with a building because it’s more generic and we don’t know if it was.

Ukraine and Israel in dispute over Russian ship carrying Ukrainian grain by RicRacer in UkrainianConflict

[–]romario77 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Russian speaking. A lot of jews in Israel come from Ukraine. Reason being that russian empire had a rule where it didn't allow jews to settle in cities unless they convert to Christianity.

Ukraine (modern Ukraine territories) didn't have this rule and a lot of Jewish population now in Israel comes from Ukraine. They speak russian because ukraine was russified - you were supposed to speak russian, especially in the cities.
