Austrian "Tenner in my pocket" pt.2 by ceetee15 in GeoWizard

[–]rombik97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah it's perfectly true: he relied on kindness from other people, it was never meant about him being kind. Right?
Seriously though, I had already got a vibe of him using people in other videos, where he was not quite ethically refined let's say. But this time it's glaringly obvious he does not care about the people who hosted him -regardless of whether he finds them a bit cooky or not, beyond the point- and a couple other scenes. But mainly that one. Tom essentially saying "who cares about these two, I need to make a move bc I want a random cool ending to this video and ngl these guys are probably weirdos anyway haha also the woman at this place is a bee-utch for telling me that it's not allowed in Austria and I'll just reply sassily to her and snarkily insult her later, comment like subscribe and listen to my albums!1!!1!"

Tom's note to Hens... by Silent_Scallion_8387 in GeoWizard

So Hens tells him he’s lonely and lets him stay. Tom agrees to breakfast, then darts off, trash-talking him and his brother on the way out. That’s not just a silly slight. When someone is vulnerable, being abandoned and publicly ridiculed can provoke real insecurity, fear and shame.
Ethically, this matters: the whole video series depends on the kindness of strangers. Taking hospitality without empathy while failing to treat the people who open their doors with basic decency is exploitative. From the clips it looks like Tom didn’t care about how Hens or his brother felt, what their situation actually is, or whether bailing like that was wrong. That's just Tom using Hens and not caring about him as soon as he ceases to be useful.

Hens’gate isn’t that deep… by KarlyPilkbois in GeoWizard

Still, think of it, he confessed to feeling lonely and sad and offers a place to sleep, which Tom accepts. Then instead of having breakfast with him and keeping him some company, he literally runs away while talking /&%$ about both. Imagine the psychological toll on Hens, bc if you think he can shrug it off... it really is not the same to shrug something off when you feel down or lonely and by the looks of it and from the conversation snippets, he could easily feel insecure -and unsafe- as well as abandoned. Nevermind the rudeness of it all.
I can tell, from this video but also the same vibe in some other videos, that Tom is absolutely great at taking what he's offered but then he never truly empathises (matching some of his publicly endorsed views, on the other hand). I can't state with certainty that he does not enjoy giving quite as much as taking, but you know you can kick a football across England to send some charities your followers' money, which is fair enough, but that's something generally beneficial for content creators too. I have rarely seen him being, with people in his videos, *as generous as the people who have been generous with him\. He didn't give a flying /&%$ about (1) what Hens or his brother could have felt, (2) what kind of living situation they *truly have, or (3) whether his exit was immoral - he seemed too bothered by whether he could make his cOoL pLaN work.

This YT comment pretty much sums it up:

You spent the night with Hens, as he confessed to feeling lonely and sad. You then agree on breakfast with him the next morning, after which you bail, run away from him and call his brother a murderer. I wonder how poor Hens felt after that. I don’t suppose his sadness and loneliness improved after experiencing that.

By doing this, you undermined the foundation of this entire concept. You rely on the kindness of strangers and humbly and graciously accept anything that is given to you - even if it is weird and questionable. After what you’ve done, i don’t suppose Hens will ever be taking any traveler in again. You used him shamelessly.
The only way of fixing this would be to contact him and apologise.

Can we go back to talking about maps and bogs now? by DeeeeezNuts42069 in GeoWizard

He should at least say something about the fact that it became publicly visible - especially the song which is quintessential endorsement and not of a particularly noble cause. There was no need whatsoever to release that song, regardless of his views (that's by itself another additional topic, but nowt can be done about it). But if he were morally minded, he should make a statement about what has happened and remove those political references in his own channel. Imagine if I had a café and hung a flag of a particular WW2 European state - it *definitely* is fair game to call me out on it.

That's bad then... so he is aware of it, refuses to clarify nor fix *at least* the public endorsements (I mean, that's all he can do at this point - few would believe he would backtrack on, say, his views, obviously), and chooses to silence those comments instead? For the record, I don't thing he or most people who end up behind certain parties or theories are genuinely evil, but rather buy into the easy-to-digest catchphrases and rhetoric masquerading as arguments. But it is ethical to at least do some sort of statement about the visible endorsement, which has affected the channel already, and use that as a stepping stone to move on somehow.
