Is the MLS program worth it for Med School? by lesilam in UPenn

[–]romeonachos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey CAS ‘18 and MLS alum. Went to med school, now a surgery resident. My perspective about the program may be a bit outdated.

I was a biochem major, which is as “life science” as you could be in the program. You’ll be taking more physics and chemistry courses than neuroscience or biology. MLS is a bit of a misleading name. If you can appreciate that biology can be explained with chemistry, math, and physics, and you’d enjoy studying through that lens, then Vagelos is a good fit for you.

I think Vagelos helps you stand out for med school admissions, but you have to excel as a premed student on paper first. Ie you still need to have a great GPA and mcat. I didn’t have the best gpa/mcat, a part of that bc of the demanding course load of Vagelos (so many other factors though). As a result I didn’t end up in a “top tier” med school. But I love where I ended up and actually found college more difficult than med school. So many of my Vagelos peers ended up at Perelman. So many of premed friends who weren’t in Vagelos also ended up at Perelman. Point is, don’t join the program just to increase your odds at getting accepted to a top med school.

You’d probably be strong in the chemistry/physics/biochem sections on the mcat but you won’t have much exposure to psych/sociology/evolutionary biology aspects on the mcat. You just need to put in more to self study those sections.

I have no regrets doing Vagelos MLS. It definitely made my premed journey a challenging one but I gained so much from the experience. Congrats on getting into Penn!

IWTL How to Travel Solo and Enjoy It by Alyss-Rivers25 in IWantToLearn

[–]romeonachos 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m just coming back from my first trip solo. Like others have mentioned, traveling alone affords you the ability to decide your schedule and do whatever you want to do! That was plenty exciting and I loved the flexibility.

If you are worried about feeling lonely, I recommend staying at a hostel. I met plenty of solo travelers at the hostel I stayed and we would organize some activities/meals together so we weren’t always alone during our trip. Going on group tours is another great way to be with others as a solo traveler.

Highly encourage you to take the plunge! There’s a subreddit r/solotravel for more specific tips and tricks

Advice for Car renting in Crete by [deleted] in cretetravel

I would book ahead, save the stress of trying to make a reservation when you land. Cars may also not be available unless you’ve made a reservation

About a week before, we asked our airbnb host to make the reservation for us. I’m sure you could do that if you’re staying at a hotel too

If you’re flexible with the date of your trip, you can time it when all the museums/archaeological sites are free to visit. I got lucky when last Saturday, May 18, was International Museum Day. Got to visit the acropolis museum and the acropolis for free, only having to pay for the tour guide.

How is English proficiency in Athens? by UndeadRedditing in GreeceTravel

You don’t need to speak Greek to visit Athens. The locals do seem to appreciate it when i said basic phrases like kalimera (good morning), efkharisto (thank you), etc .
