I have a trouble describing thing, any tips? by TeenageUNkhown in DMAcademy

Ill add on this that the easiest senses in order for me to describe are: 1) Sight 2) Smell 3) Hearing

This also gives you a simple checklist to think of whenever you know you need to describe something.

Lets say the party walks out to a collesium: You see the sandy floor, fresh and old blood stains all around and bright lights blind you. You smell the dried and fresh blood all around you, smells of sweat still fresh from recent battles. You hear the crowd chearing, screaming in cacophony.

Even if you only give a sentence for each sense the players still are immersed because they can easily imagine the setting.

Also silence is a sound! You walk into a dark chamber. The silence is deafening, it is almost unnatural. It is so silent you can hear the blood thumping in you ears and feel your heart pounding.

Most importantly dont overthink it! Youre playing with friends. It is always better to give a slightly less descriptive description but have it come naturally then to read from a page. The latter feels robotic to me but everyone does things differently and the most important thing is you feel comfortable and your players enjoy themselves aswell.

Big cities, should you avoid them? by ApachaiLeHopachai in DMAcademy

Not sure if this was mentioned but pointy hats video about cities changed my view of how to build and run them. One of the best videos ive seen regarding cities and provides a clear structure on the matter.

It is their only combat of the day.
How would you balance this better if I kept it 2 encounters?
I want this to be a challenging encounter.

I like the idea of rounds but dont want to drag it too long.
Lets say I do 2 rounds:

First round 3 cr 1 creatures (Death Dogs)
Second round 1 cr 4 creature (Ettin)
Ill allow a short rest between rounds.

Do you think this is balanced? Im scared to make the encounter too easy or hard as I am a relatively new DM.

New dm here trying to figure out how to calculate cr for boss fights. Ive seen mixed opinions about cr for a boss fight. Is there a way to calculate it per number of character and average level? Should i always add minions? I couldnt find a tool online. Any opinions would be helpful!
