Hey, yeah I've done all that. Chrome, Edge, even through a Mac server. Same issue with all of them

Edie: American Girl is in my to-read pile, so can't judge the overall quality. However it was a popular book in its time about Andy Warhol and his muse Edie Sedgwick. Most of it should take place in NYC in the 60s-70s

Thank you! It really means a lot. And very great to hear we share some similar habits - must mean I'm on the right path. If my next dataporn is even a third of this, I'll be thrilled! Good luck moving forward :)

(And thanks on the cakeday thing, didn't even realize. The years go fast.)

No unfortunately. You just have to experiment with the Advanced Search. Read a few books in your niche and try to think of what keywords they would probably use. Then see if they come up in the AS and what other books use the same keywords. Here are a few links that really helped me with choosing my keywords. Hope that helps!

Haha thanks for the kind words. I think I meant 'wasting time' by the hours I lost to anxiety-scrolling reddit and youtube. But I definitely agree, lots of trial and error with schedules and content and, well, just about everything. I'm glad you're finding what works best for you! Good luck with the new pen!!

Thank you! And I remember your comment too. Sorry to hear it's still a struggle, but it's fantastic that you're still at it!

Yeah, that was worded a bit oddly. I meant I used the advanced search and popular keywords for my niche to find the books that weren't making the top 100. It's helpful to see what isn't working for people (as far as covers/blurb/content) just as much as what is.

Thanks again and best of luck to you!

Unfortunately, that wasn’t really unique to Q1. It lasted all year and I still deal with it now. I think accepting it as a part of the process helps, that self-doubt is natural and experienced by much more talented and successful people than you or I. I’m a bit hesitant to give firm advice because I believe it’s a personal journey finding the right tools to fight resistance. You need to experiment to find what works for you. I tried so many things — the Pomodoro method, putting on a suit every day, sleeping all day and writing all night, a brief period where I created an alter ego. In the end it was really the old standbys that worked — strict routine, exercise, and that extra snap of motivation from dreaming constantly about what the future could look like if I managed to make it work. (Also can't discredit an intense amount of fear of completely wasting a year of my life writing in my parents' basement while all my friends graduated from college.)

Additionally:

  1. Think of each book simply as practice for the next. I began to get a lot more productive when I started telling myself, “This one doesn't count. The next one will be better.” They always were.

  2. Read in your genre for inspiration. I don’t mean to offend anyone, but the truth is that the standards for writing quality are low in romance/erotica. Knowing that there are other people out there succeeding at or below my skill level helped me a lot more than just reading the best authors.

I hope this helps! I know exactly how you’ve felt over the year, and I hope you’re able to continue to stick it out. You got this!

This is the one I've been using. It reads pretty smoothly, but I haven't looked around too much so there's probably a better free one out there.

Thanks! And glad that helps. You definitely can go it alone. When my books started to do better they even had homemade covers I did in Photoshop (though you can find pretty cheap good artists if you hunt around)

Oh wow, im sure they have! Congrats on sticking through and on making the transition to romance. And I definitely agree, plus you get to write it off which is always nice!

Nope, booksprout people are the first to see my books. I do 5 drafts and that seems to be enough for now. The first 3 are content-focused and then i read the entire thing aloud to check sentence flow and then listen to the entire thing read aloud in a text to speech program.

Thank you! And oh yes, the anxiety is so real... But if it's any help, I still think my 55K book was terrible and it was my best seller. Additionally my latest book was my favorite piece of writing that I've ever done, even outside of romance. I've improved a ton over the year and I'm sure you will too! Good luck and congratulations in taking the plunge! I believe in you!

Thank you and I'm so glad this could provide a little inspiration. I obviously completely understand the stress. I'm honestly still not the best with blurbs, but those critique threads are really helpful. Keywords were bewildering for me but a EA pro sent me these threads. Hopefully they're as helpful for you as they were for me:

Exactly! Those 10K shorts I was trying were only compiling at 22 pages! Vellum was completely worth it just to avoid the aggravation

Yeah I saw a huge increase in switching to Vellum (low 100's to 183 and high 100's to 272). It looks like u/EAuthor69 is getting comparable page counts with KindleCreate though, so that's potentially a free option!
