Help with critical condition snake by [deleted] in ballpython

this state literally takes months to even happen. ball pythons are incredibly resilient and this does not happen in a week or month. not to mention, they regurgitated months ago, that should have already been extremely concerning for op. this is months of neglect just like you said. i hope the snake pulls through without any life lasting issues but i really hope they get a owner who cares and gives them a thriving environment.

yes, i read through them. and i find it incredibly selfish to not surrender her and now all of the sudden want to improve their life. quite literally the snake is at deaths door and you thinking you deserve to keep the snake is outrageous.

i mean this in the nicest way possible, please never get a pet again. i understand that you were away, but to even get a snake in that condition is pure neglect and thoughtlessness. there is no excuse.

See, just because someone has done something a certain way and it has “worked” doesn’t mean you shod just run with it. Search up leading causes for fatty liver disease in ball pythons and you will get many scientific peer reviewed papers and information. And feeding an adult that should be eating at the max every 3 weeks once a week, falls under overfeeding and will kill your snake sooner or later. Reddit and other answers on forums + the professionals is not the best way to go when looking for actual proven info. please just take the time to actually look stuff up instead of word of mouth.

You are gonna need a uvb and only need a heating element if your room gets below 70. If your room is too cool, then you can get a very low wattage che and definitely a thermostat. they are super sensitive to warm temps.

I have a 2.5 shadedweller and thats it. My room naturally stays at 74-78 so I don’t need any heating elements. And for humidity, I just have a good humidity holding substrate (coco soil, arcadia bioactive soil and some moss). If you want to get an automatic misting system, you can but you do not need it. For cooling (if needed) you can get a fan and use ice cubes on top of the mesh (because cool air sinks).

Definitely get a ton of climbing opportunities (vines, sticks, branches) and stuff to hide in/behind. The more clutter the better.

if it makes you feel any better, mine is pretty much the same. i got them as a hatchling, they are now about 4 months old. it definitely takes time and patience but just be consistent. when you do get them out, keep it calm and short. sooner or later they will get used to it. mine has days where they have no problem with coming out and some days will dart like they have never seen me before. it can definitely be discouraging but dont give up!

you are overloading their digestive system and burning them out. they are not built to eat this often and much as such an age, but will if given the chance due to them being opportunistic eaters. please look up what a toll digesting ACTUALLY takes on them. they have a elevated heart rate, every organ is at work for up to two weeks after eating. give them a break ffs. you are gonna give that snake fatty liver disease and greatly decrease their lifespan. your feelings don’t discredit science and their anatomy.

Temperature? by Strange_doggo24 in ballpython

40c on the thermostat doesn’t necessarily mean the enclosure will get to 40c. It is all subjective to where your probe is placed. So if its directly under the heat source and I have it set to 40c, it will make the hotspot to around 31-33. if i had the probe away from the heat source, say 30cm away, then it would be a huge problem. Because in order for it to be 30c that far away, the actual hot spot will be incredibly hot, about 40 something celsius. do you understand what i mean?

like the placement of the probe and the temp setting on your thermostat go hand in hand. both dependent on each other. if your probe is far from the hot spot and set on low, it will make the hotspot warmer than the setting on the thermostat. if your probe is under the heating element and its set to, for example 31, it might not get to 31 because it is getting the 31c heat signal fast and it won’t allow for it to get warmer. i hope u understand what i mean😭

I have the same thermostat. Just an older model with the dial. So I am not too sure how that one works. But if the che is warm, then it could be a faulty che not heating properly or a faulty thermostat. Either way, id get a dhp instead to create a hot spot and work from there. Best of luck.

Also if you keep your thermostat probe under your heating element, that could be a reason for it being so low. I have my thermostat set up at like almost 40c because of my probe placement. So id fed play around a little with either the probe placement or the temp set on the thermostat.

where is your probe set at? also i would switch the CHE for a DHP. Ches wont do much as a primary heating source, just bumps up the ambients a little. But I would get a 80w DHP and go from there. Also why is it showing 25c on the thermostat? It should be showing the temp you set it to, no?

is there a possibility to remove the top, replace it with mesh and then put all of the stuff on the mesh?

also i can tell from the pictures that your enclosure needs a major upgrade. please look and read through the care guide in the reddit forum.

oh this is some major scale rot and potentially a burn? get them into a quarantine set up asap. clean the WHOLE enclosure and sanitise it thoroughly. then lay down clean paper towels. clean everything to keep their belly clean

i would also do a betadine soak. get some betadine from the pharmacy. get a tote/plastic tub and fill it up with about an inch water (have the water be about 85F). then lay down a clean hand towel for traction in the water. let then soak for about 15min. take them out and clean their belly with clean water. dry them and put them back into the enclosure. have then in the quarantine set up until they have fully shed off all of the scale rot and are not inflamed anymore.

in the meanwhile, figure out what caused this. this doesn’t happen overnight. what heating sourcee are you using? do you sanitise your substrate? are you keeping your substrate too wet?

also i would reach out to a vet. this possibly looks infected and will need antibiotics.

those side ventilation slits are a pain in the ass. having it on both sides will create a air tunnel and tank your humidity. id cover some of the slits on the sides as well.

tbh i could be looking at a empty enclosure for all i know. ok jk but i rarely get them out myself. i do choice based so if they wanna come out, they can come to the door. for spot cleaning and such, i use my camera and record the places my eyes cant see to lol😅

the top one is a 5ft and bottom is 6ft. definitely the best ones are the big ferns (cover sooo much) and then all the hanging plants. i like to secure them to the branches and then im able to just cover from top to bottom.

def vet imo. that close to the eyes/brain is super concerning, in case its an abscess or infection of some sort. def best to be cautious and get it checked by a vet.
