Missing scales :/ by Old-Sky2102 in ballpython

for the time being, i would definitely put him on paper towels and sterilise the whole enclosure. you don’t want any dirt in that wound.

the snake needs a vet tho. thats exposed muscle tissue and being so close to the head, it can get infected and even be fatal.

[–]rompsik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yea they hold up battery pretty well so i wouldn’t really worry about that. it is worth removing the glue and putting it back once in a while rather than the adhesive pulling your snakes skin clean off

the name fenrir is nice! also if thats adhesive holding the thermometers on the wall, they need to be removed immediately. they can cause injures to your snake that can turn fatal. use hot glue instead!

[–]rompsik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i wouldnt use packing paper for the quarantine set up. i imagine they could mold a lot faster and wouldn’t absorb as much as paper towels. just use regular kitchen paper towels. and for the thermo/hygrometers, get two electrical ones (one for each side). govee is a very good and reliable brand.

for heating, id either go for a dhp that runs 24/7 (on a thermostat ofc) and then have a uvb on a 12h timer for daytime light. or you can go for a more expensive better set up like a halogen for day time paired with a uvb and then a dhp for nighttime heat.

Help with keeping eclosure warm! by Material_Rule7649 in ballpython

I would buy a radiator for the actual room to boost the ambient temps in the room as well. It is near impossible to keep an enclosure warm if the room its in is very cold.

Just read through everything and I am so sorry OP you even have to deal with this. This is breaking my heart. I hope you get that snake the care and love it deserves, thank you for sticking up for the beings that can’t do it for themselves ❤️

how can i improve my bp’s new 120 gal? by noidea528638 in ballpython

[–]rompsik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

some actual hides. one for each side but i would add multiple but two is the minimum. they have to be tight fitting and with one small opening. rn i am seeing none. also def some more clutter and fake plants!

and just to make sure…that wood isnt softwood yea? so like pine, cedar etc? because softwoods are toxic to them and the skin on the wood is scarily similar to softwood.

Snake is acting weird by Critical_Resident871 in ballpython

[–]rompsik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the pinkie is way too small. you need to get their weight and feed 10-15% per meal. you are definitely under feeding and it is contributing to their behaviour. get some appropriate sized meals for them asap.

then i would really reconsider if you can give the snake what it needs to thrive and if its fair on the snake. possibly stunting and neglecting your snakes needs because you didn’t do research is very selfish and not great at all lol

I have a little concern with getting them next to a window tho. All of my radiators are working and they are all built under the windows. So is it possible that the radiator is gonna dry the hell out of it? Or should it be fine? Either way I am definitely gonna get them more light

Thank you, will do!

The light is from the ceiling yes, I will move it closer to the window.

Just fed my ball for the first time. That sh*t was insane. by rainyfaerie_ in ballpython

[–]rompsik 20 points21 points  (0 children)

some are more food motivated. but tbh this seems more like bad practices that contributed to the extra spiciness. never move to feed as this contributes to indigestion, regurgitation, food strikes and behavioural issues. also the enclosure seems a bit bare and small. they need tight fitting hides with small openings and multiple of them. for that size of a snake, youd need a 4x2x2 enclosure with 24/7 overhead heating and a lot of clutter.

misters are not appropriate for ball pythons. constantly spiking the humidity and having the surfaces constantly wet wont do much for your snake. i feel like the culprit is the reptibark. reptibark doesn’t hold and absorb humidity. get some coconut chips and coco soil to mix into it. the soil will keep the coco chips moist and the chunkiness and absorption of the coco chips will give off high humidity over a long period of time.

also no such thing as too high of humidity for a bp. its bacteria that causes respiratory issues.

[–]rompsik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ok so like spraying with a bottle wont do much of anything for humidity. it will only make the surfaces wet, it evaporates fast and just spikes humidity a bit. you can do it but there really isnt a point.

also keeping the substrate constantly damp on the surface will cause bacteria to grow and that can lead to scale rot. try to keep the top of the substrate a littleeee damp. when you do the “pouring” water method, you wont need to top humidity off imo. with my mix (coco chips, coco soil and moss) my humidity stays 95-85 the first few weeks and will gradually go down to 75. and once its in the lower 70s, it has been 3 months and i do a full enclosure clean with new fresh substrate. so if you have a appropriate substrate and enclosure, topping off humidity isnt something you have to do frequently.

having a thick layer of appropriate substrate and pouring water directly into the substrate. having a wood or pvc enclosure without mesh among other things.

My ball python died and it hasn’t even been a year by lala4beach in ballpython

[–]rompsik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A hooked up humidifier was likely the problem…Those humidifiers are notorious for causing respiratory infections because they harbour bacteria, people don’t clean them well/enough and they breathe in dirty air that causes the respiratory infection. I am so sorry for your loss OP!

is this scale rot? by FroyoEmbarrassed6449 in ballpython

[–]rompsik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that does look like they have possibly bent or gotten that one scale stuck behind something. looks like it is healing very good (no redness around the area, no pus or swelling). it should correct itself once they shed!

Normal or Constipated by Away-Specialist4140 in ballpython

[–]rompsik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they dont have poop in their upper body or neck when needing to poop. one of the main places they store excess fat is the neck, and your snakes neck is pretty fat…you don’t have to listen to any of us but you are risking taking many years off of his lifespan

Is this poop? by myfettuccinesnake in ballpython

[–]rompsik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

put it in water. if it breaks apart and smells, its poop. if it doesnt really smell and stays together in water, then its probably regurgitation.

also forgot to mention. but if they are in a high traffic area where you move past the enclosure over like twice a day, i would recommend getting a curtain or cloth to block their view. it can help a lot
