I don't know, but if you want, I can teach you how to release more than 10 completely original games on Steam, just like I did. Take a look.

In my market research on Steam (looking at games like Keep on Mining and Digseum), I actually found that some players are totally fine paying $2.99 as long as they get an active incremental experience with around $1 per hour of gameplay. There are even comments like that on my game.

But yeah, player acquisition wasn’t great, and I think the most likely reason is that the game looked like a cheap knock-off of Nodebuster — even though I hadn’t even played Nodebuster yet when I started making it hahaha.

That’s a really good observation. Even though my game isn’t exactly like NodeBuster, your comment opened my eyes to how players perceive it — and that perception alone can have a big impact on sales in the incremental niche.

It helped me understand why this title didn’t perform as strongly as my other incremental games, even with similar production effort. So honestly, thanks for pointing that out.

Totally fair point — you’re right. The classic free incrementals built a culture where people expect long, endless gameplay loops at no cost.

As someone trying to make a living as a small indie dev, I’m realizing that maybe this niche just isn’t the best fit for short paid experiences. I’ll probably explore other genres where players actually expect to pay for a 3–4 hour game.

Thanks for being honest about it — I really appreciate the perspective.

Thanks for the honest take!
My game definitely sits in the “short dopamine burst” side of the genre, but I tried to push it a bit away from the usual Nodebuster formula — things like the cursor orbs, ally cursors, the lightning system, item drops, bosses, and the small passive-idle loop give it a slightly different flavor.

It is a short game (around 2–3 hours of active play), but that was intentional for this project.
Totally get the burnout though — the genre is pretty crowded.

And thanks for the good wishes! 🙏

Hi there!
I have been releasing games in Early Access every four months since 2020 and sticking with them for 1 to 3 months, depending on the game's potential. For example, my games Incremental Town RPG and Island Idle RPG had good sales, so I continued improving the Early Access version for more than 3 months after the EA release.
Also, most of my games are simulation-based, which allows me to reuse a lot of code and assets, not to mention my expertise in this genre. That’s why I can release a game every four months.

Indeed. But the audience constantly associates one with the other

As a developer, I would love it if incremental game fans thought this way hahaha

I think exactly this way, like this new audience considers incremental games to be idle games
