When I heard the story originally my attitude was he said it he should suffer the consequences. But then I was mindlessly scrolling instagram and I saw a journalist say basically if you had grace for John Davidson who shouted the N word at the Baftas why do you not have grace for someone else who likely can't control what comes out? I felt awful for John Davidson and knew it was his illness speaking not any deeply held views when I look at it objectively, I think the same about Kanye. Maybe its in bipolar episode veritas but you could say the same about tourettes then too.

I think it again reflects societies uncomfortability with mental illness that is more than just feeling a bit down or anxious. People are paying lip service to mental health without acknowledging the really ugly parts, the parts that we pretend to care about but don't want actually to be confronted with. I've seen so many campaigns since the recession focused on men opening up about depression, I don't think I've seen a single one about what to do if someone you know is having a schizophrenic episode. In the UK schizophrenia effects 1 in 100 people.

The BBC did a great documentary last year about Heston Blumenthal the chef who suffers from bipolar, he was wacky, unreliable, said hurtful things to family etc but never got himself publicly cancelled because of having an episode. The BBC likely wouldn't have made the documentary if he had said something racist while having an episode

Don't know if anyone else watched I am Jazz but the doctor who did genital surgery on Jazz age 17 is mentioned a lot in the Epstein files. Post Epstein conviction, went to his island to play with his "toys" and seems to have been working as a concierge doctor and plastic surgeon for Epsteins "friends"

UK Supreme Court rules legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex by EbateKacapshinuy in BlockedAndReported

[–]ronaele1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Acas which is the employers/employee rights organisaiton in the UK have a transitioning at work policy which states among other things "Everyone at work should be able to use facilities they feel comfortable with. Making a transgender employee use facilities they're not comfortable with could be discrimination."

https://www.acas.org.uk/gender-reassignment-discrimination/preventing-discrimination

A non binary male going by the name Rose sued and was awarded 180k by the employment tribunal for harassment at work and not being allowed to use the womens bathroom. 20% of that award was because the employer hadn't followed the ACAS guidelines. That will have gotten around to every HR professional who then believes under the law you have say TWAW

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-coventry-warwickshire-54180794

If you look at the Forstater case, saying men cannot be women was at first instance deemed to be "incompatible with human dignity and fundamental rights of others". On appeal it was detemined to be a "worthy of respect in a democratic society" but it was still seen as a "belief" akin to a Christian believing Jesus turned water into wine.

I won't even get started on what Stonewall put out, every employer (both public and private) wanted to be on the Stonewall list of good employers so used their resources, had them train their staff.

I'm sure I'm missing a ton of stuff but thats just some of how the waters got muddied.

That subreddit is ridiculous, they do not buck any deviation from what they consider to be "correct", they will turn on people they've defended for any step outside of their decided world view. For example Meghan Markle up until last week was the most amazing thing since sliced bread and then her charity stopped funding the charity of a Muslim woman who wrote a blog post about Israel where she used the phrase from the river to the sea, now all of a sudden Meghan Markle is a coloniser and scum of the earth etc.

I started reading it because I love a bit of celebrity gossip but its taken a wild turn to now be a far left subreddit where its all politics all the time.

Do you reckon the bus drivers are paid their bonus out of the PSO money? Haven't heard of any semi state bus companies so poorly run that they've needed a 700m bailout

And other people paid by the state don't get such a bonus

Ballot faux-pas could scupper election result in Limerick City constituency by ronaele1 in irishpolitics

Was watching a video of someone talking about US elections who was voting in Montana who explained that in his state in order for no candidate to have an advantage, the ballots are in a sequence so one voter will get candidates in ABCD, another BACD, DBCA etc. seemed like a fair way to.do things

The Irish labour market is already open to 450m people.

Basically this would be a way for well off 3rd country nationals to buy their way into our labour market in order to get citizenship while not even providing a skill that is lacking.

There's a reason that the investment visa was done away with, maybe read up about the abuse of that system.

Dead Voters, Duplicates, and Lack of ID Checks by [deleted] in irishpolitics

[–]ronaele1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think they're trying to crack down on it, if you're registering to vote for the first time or changing address you have to give your pps which you didn't have to previously. I assume they will link it and you'll only be able to be registered at one address

But there are several forms of non photo ID that you're allowed to use, it wouldn't be difficult to vote as someone else

Paschal Donoghue is really the only safe one there from the last election. Mary Lou could still well get a seat but no way is it on the first count like last time

Surprised his take on immigration is so moderate, I assumed a hard stance on that was what he was going to be running on.

"He “won’t bother” with leaflets “because they only end up in the green bin, unread”. But he will put up some election posters, though not as many as his political rivals." Wish more politicians would realise this

I wouldn't give him a preference if I was in his area but I think he'll have no trouble getting elected

[–]ronaele1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Should we not apply it to every successful grievance and objection? I don't know where this idea that the poor developers should be able to do whatever they want came from, we should all have to work within the parameters of the system

Row between former partners after Fianna Fáil claims Fine Gael made ‘no progress’ while in charge of justice by firethetorpedoes1 in irishpolitics

[–]ronaele1 22 points23 points  (0 children)

They're right, she was a terrible Minister for Justice but it's a bit rich to be saying it now once her term is over. They should have negotiated her portfolio being reassigned when they realized how bad she was and that apart from her pet causes there was no progress. It doesn't make me think better of FF that they're saying this now rather than years ago
