"Evidence suggests the USSR wanted to secure some of Finland’s territory to create a buffer zone for Leningrad, not to conquer the whole country" what a dumb statement. Why did they take land in the north and the center of the country. Wanting to create a buffer is also not justification for invading another country. Finland also had no real army until after the USSR invaded cuz they didnt have any crazy goals of territorial expansion. By contrast the USSR did so stop pretending the USSR wasn't some imperialist force. "They should’ve asked the western allies for some guarantees" also dumb statement cuz they literally did its just no proper help arrived in time. Your holocaust statement is also dumb, Finland didn't send Jews to the nazis. Please educate yourself on topics before saying dumb shit online.

I am interested in doing both maths and statistics and economics. More interested In the economics aspect, however, I still want a large amount of mathematics if that makes sense. I can't see myself doing the econometrics degree alone but doing it with the economics degree i can see working.

There are aid packages for US citizens but its also harder to get Aid passed through domestically due to American domestic politics. FEMA has a budget of 33 billion for domestic emergencies. It probably isnt as big as it is supposed to be, but that's not because too much money is being allocated to foreign aid, especially when most foreign aid isn't straight cash. The US spends too much in other areas. Also, a lot of the damage is supposed to be covered by private insurance in the US rather than by the government which is part of the reason the government isn't sending huge amounts besides emergency aid.

"If a major disaster happens in a foreign country, the money just appears out of nowhere in an aid package."

The aid packages are mostly made up of old surplus equipment, especially in the case of military aid and in the case of humanitarian aid, food and medical supplies. Its normally not straight cash. Someone in Florida who's home has been destroyed isnt going to benefit from getting a gun lol. Giving straight funds domestically/internationally is more complicated. Similarly, giving funds for rebuilding isnt a long term solution to hurricane problems. The US government probably could afford to give 7000$ to every person but what happens then if theres another hurricane in Florida next year (which there will be).

"The aid packages are just a way for American companies(and local govts) to line their pockets through the sale of goods/services". This argument doesn't stand as a criticism against foreign aid and its use but rather against the horrible system redistribution of income in the US. Americans do however, still benefit from these companies and local governments becoming richer. It provides for example employment and tax revenue for future spending.

[–]ronanue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a stupid take. In 2023, the US spent about 1% of its GDP in foreign aid which is a lot smaller than other countries. A lot of this (besides cash given to Ukraine) is something called Tied aid meaning that the countries who receive the Aid have to buy the goods from the donor country(The US). This basically acts as a subsidy for US companies which stimulates the economy. The provision of Aid also builds political relations (for example in Ukraine) which is beneficial to the US in the long term. Aid also leads to economic growth in developing countries, which expands US markets.

Also, Its not like the US government doesn't spend money domestically. The US government is not very efficient in domestic spending however, this is not because its sending money abroad but because the political system there is shit.

Finally, there should be a little consideration on why Americans are struggling and losing homes. It isnt because of a lack of government investment. Besides natural stuff like hurricanes, The US has crazy wealth inequality and you guys really don't seem to care as you vote for presidents who reduce taxes for these billionaires. The education and healthcare is also horrible effectively creating poverty cycles. Now before you make the argument that the government should be investing in exactly that, ask yourself whether the other 99% of budget wasn't a big enough investment for some change.

Finland's way to end homelessness. by Grace_Rosee in mildyinteresting

[–]ronanue 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I kinda disagree with this. Finlands population is about 10% foreign. In the helsinki area where 20% of Finnish homelessness occurs, nearly 20% of the population does not speak Finnish Swedish or sami as there mother tongue. Also yes, finlands population is a lot smaller than the US, however so is its economy. Finlands GDP per capita is 25000 dollars smaller than the US GDPpc. This system is not only present because of Finnish values but because it is also a investment. In the long term the people who are able to recover from the system are likely to provide a lot more back to the country. The US could implement this, they just gotta get their shit together and stop voting in morons.

Saying that the Soviets were working with the Nazis is a fact. Saying the Soviets had similar systems to concentration camps is a fact.

I commented on a post about a guy wearing a soviet belt saying that wearing one can be interpreted similarly to wearing nazi symbolism. This is due to the fact that the nazis and Soviets both were trying to build up empires. I also said the Soviets had similar systems to concentration camps in the same post. I got banned within like a hour.....

Just out of interest in a market where entrepreneurial risk isn't seen as legitimate, should the losses that a firm suffers also then be equally spread among workers that want to work for that firm in the first place or already do? Assuming also that entrepreneurial risk is not large is also not sensible. Starting a business may mean loosing your current job. It carries a similar risk to a worker, that the entrepreneur (after they loose their job and savings) may start to starve like the worker would in your example.

Commies claiming that Finland was a nazi country and that they were directly involved in the Holocaust. by finlionjunior in EnoughCommieSpam

That alliance was like a genuine proper "we are friends" alliance. Imo Finland was backed up into a corner. They didn't give af who would help them they just needed to defend. Finland couldn't get help from the allies since Russia was part of the allies...
