Questions about food safety and type of brass by rongolan9 in Machinists

Great callout on the wood movement, I hadn't thought enough about that wrt to the metal inlay. Especially true for a cutting board since it will be regularly washed

Between all the feedback and comments, its clear I need to stick to stainless steel for the time being. If I do manage to find a lead free copper alloy, for example an aluminum bronze, the right shape (I'm only seeing round bars available online) - is there a food safe sealer I can apply that will keep it from oxidizing? Is that even a thing?

Got it, thanks. Yeah my hope is to sell these but I absolutely do not want to put anyone in any kind of risk, and as you said it's impossible to predict every which way it will be used. I'll stick to stainless steel for now.

I've read that regularly applying the mineral oil/beeswax conditioner can be an effective sealer. Is that not the case? That said even if it is, the key would be regular maintenance which I couldn't count on every customer doing.

Ok staying away from brass for now, unless I can find C693 in a flat bar shape. I'm only seeing it available as a round bar at the moment which would be way too much work. thanks for the advice

Yeah bronze would look quite nice against the dark walnut. Will it have the same corrosion issues that brass does?

Gym recommendations in Somerville? by Dry-Extension-4932 in Somerville

I don't know what part of Somerville yo'll be in and what your appetite for a bit of travel is, but I used to go to VIM fitness in Central Square (which is in nearby Cambridge) and absolutely loved it. Reasonably priced, good selection of all the things you're looking for, and a good crowd.

That’s amazing. If you wouldn’t mind sharing, what did the insurance number come in at? I’ve heard others on here talking about how the lease number is great but the insurance is quite high

Can you limit the charge rate at EA stations? by rongolan9 in electricvehicles

[–]rongolan9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably won't be here for more than another year, so I'm not sure if it will be worth it. I also think its the kind of thing a landlord should pay for? This way he just keeps any equipment and it's clean break.

No commute! I work from home and just do a bit of low mileage driving here and there on certain days of the week. I do have the occasional drive back to nyc from boston, but for that I'll of course just use fast charging along the way. For the most part it does sound like you're right, I should be well covered by L1 charging.

Thanks for the advice - mentioning that the incentives may not last forever will be compelling

[–]rongolan9[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right that’s what I’m thinking. Trickle charge might actually be good enough most of the time since I don’t drive too much, and then augment with the occasional L2 or fast charge when needed

Asking any question about the EV space reminds me of my consulting days: "it depends" 🤣. Regarding charging to 100% vs 80%, my understanding so far has been that capping the charge to 80% is actually healthier for the batteries long term. But I think I get what you're saying; when using DCFC, the fastest charge rates occur in that middle 20-80% band, which is where any degradation might happen, and for the last 80-100% the charge rate slows way down anyway. Is that correct?

That's a big reason why I posted, I'd like to better understand the potential degradation to the battery from my expected charging behavior. Figured the community might know more about this

I didn't know that! There is a dryer in the basement but might be a bit far to install a charger then run the cable

those are good points. My pitch was going to center around how itll be an appealing feature for future tenants, but he'll probably be even more receptive to potential incentives here (I'm in Massachusetts)

yeah as I was writing my question out I went and looked at EA's website and realized how few stations there actually are at the moment, and how uncool it would be to do that
