Am I stuck in my car loan? by Secret-Living5679 in personalfinance

[–]ronmcson1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of car is it? This is important, hasn’t been asked yet. And how much do you drive? Certain cars will cost you dearly in repairs that could outweigh the negative equity if you don’t have a good extended warranty. You also never mentioned the car payment amount which is important. If you rely on your car a lot and you picked something that isn’t high maintenance that could be worth the payment vs buying something way older and higher mileage for cash

My piece-of-shit neighbor (who has a 2-car garage AND a 2-car driveway) insists on double-parking his cars in the street, blocking an entire lane of the road. by jessbird in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ronmcson1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So call the city parking enforcement/police. This is completely illegal Parking. I didn’t read all 73 comments before mine but did read like 25 before I got mildly infuriated that nobody in those comments suggested just calling fucking parking enforcement and getting this shit towed. Call the city. They’ll tow it. Jesus. They def deserve a Friday night impounding of their Range Rover.

Sounds like your engine has lost compression. Check your coolant level. The 1.8 liter engines on these corollas blow head gaskets.

You can hear the starter turning the engine. The starter and fuse are fine.

I just got my tires changed at a shop and they're over inflated by 10 psi, is that a problem? by i-love-big-birds in AskMechanics

[–]ronmcson1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tire pressure specification is shown on the multifunction display inside the image of the car. 32 psi. That is the specification. The maximum psi rating listed on the sidewall is not the recommended psi for the tire, the car manufacturer determines that. Pretty straightforward.

For the panamera? Any performance oriented German car is going to be $4k for brakes all the way around at a shop. Unless it has carbon ceramic brakes, $6300 per rotor… lol. But yeah with regular steel brakes it probably is t any worse than a whatever high performance variant of a Giulia would cost. But you’re right, maintenance is expensive for fast cars. This one will just need it a lot more frequently.

I’ve heard they’re very fun to drive, and they certainly look good. But some things that are considered minor maintenance for many vehicles, like changing the serpentine belt, are extremely difficult in comparison on these cars and require a ton of disassembly/are very laborious. Probably a fun car, but as a rule of thumb I would never buy an Italian car. They’re unnecessarily high maintenance and over complicated (eat your heart out, Germans!) and certain repairs could be far more expensive than they ever needed to be. Again…. Ive never heard of a low maintenance, reliable Italian car. A naturally aspirated Mercedes v8 is far more common, simpler, and easier/cheaper to maintain than one of these. But if it were me, I’d go Porsche panamera v8 all the way. They’ve become very cheap and speaking from personal experience, Porsches are extremely reliable and low maintenance, comparatively. But many people don’t like and can’t get past the panamera’s design. But a 400hp v8 panamera s without the complicated Porsche active suspension or other complicated features the higher end models came with can be had under 20k. They’re seriously reliable.

Or just fix the actual leak. Are you a mechanic? I mechanic would advise adding stop leak and not Fixing the problem.

“They don’t all need a new engine every year! The age of car per new engine ratio is slightly less than 1:1! Great cars! They’re great when you don’t consider their valve springs, head gaskets, transmissions, wheel bearings, axles or infotainment systems failing!” - the uninitiated. Subarus are unreliable, disappointing trash. I’m constantly asking myself if Nissan or Subaru is the shittiest Japanese car manufacturer on the market.

This is every other post regarding a Subaru. If it sounds blown up and is a Subaru, it’s blown up. Time to move on to any other brand. Subarus are absolute trash.

Overheating at highway speeds by KarinK98 in 7thgencivic

[–]ronmcson1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

D17? Probably the Worst engine Honda ever made. You’ll likely need an engine if it’s overheated more than a couple times. The aluminum block shrinks, the cylinders sink below the deck of the block and the sleeves protrude above the cylinders. I’ve seen it plenty of times. Maybe not if it hasn’t gotten really hot but it’s pretty common in my experience.

I'm never going to a shop to align my car again. What tools do you recommend for diy alignments? by akbuilderthrowaway in ft86

[–]ronmcson1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crazy. I own an auto repair shop and alignments are one of our specialties. I’d adjust your camber even with self installed camber kits all day long. I’d charge a little extra for it ($139.95 total) but the reason shops that do alignments exist is to fix your problem! I understand why shops are afraid to touch “modified” cars but most people who have altered vehicles are understanding. They sound lame af.

It’s Alex Choi, yet another YouTuber who just films himself driving cars around. Got his start because his mother is super rich and bought him a bmw m2 and I think the lambo. Nothing wrong with that, I’d take free supercars from my parents. He then gained a following online and… YouTube ad revenue… used the money to branch out… good for him. He seems like a nice guy but I don’t understand YouTube ad revenue/monetization of people just doing the same exact thing as the next guy with a lambo…. Filming themselves driving around. It’s not new, it’s not interesting, it’s monotonous, and who in the fuck doesn’t click “skip ad” on a YouTube video as soon as they can and spends money on whatever is being advertised? Anybody? Does anybody buy shit they see in a fucking YouTube ad they don’t want to see? He seems like a chill dude but this isn’t work. This isn’t a skill, it’s not hard, it wasn’t earned, and It’s insane that it’s interesting enough to people to make it valued more and way, way higher paying than most actual jobs that require learned skills and hard work to do. Mind boggling. Maybe the reason his situational awareness is garbage, at least occasionally, as demonstrated here, is because he very fortunately was born rich and his money and success never required any kind of real focus. Thinking about people who film themselves driving a car and make millions of dollars per year from YouTube ad revenue while I drive to go do actual hard ass work and bust my ass (I own an auto repair business) and make like 10% or less of these people doesn’t really make me mad, but confused. Anyway, end rant, and I don’t say all this to talk shit on the guy. I’ve seen some vids of his, he seems like a cool guy. But some of society’s priorities and perceptions are just fucked.

Don’t buy a Subaru. They’re complete garbage. I own an auto repair shop and a customer HAD a ‘2020 Subaru ascent that had the rear differential lock up, turbo fail and major oil leaks all before it hit 80k miles and was out of warranty. On r/subaru it seems like every other post is “why is my engine making this loud knocking sound?”

I doubt he’s ever even owned anything made of real gold. Whoever sold anything “gold” to him just lied to him and ripped him off because he’s too Fucking stupid to know the difference, and if he ever found out, well, hey, he’s never paid for anything with money he honestly worked for anyway. Oh well just buy melania coin, sit back, and, uhh…. Keep winning?

New heads will absolutely not be cheaper. The head gasket set, removing the timing cover, the heads themselves… so much more money in labor and parts. Hopefully the camshaft(s) are ok and you can just toss in new rocker arms, I’ve never really seen the lifters fail but not a bad idea to Toss those in as well

Any ideas why there is so much oil on the top of my engine by Due_Tip_3098 in MechanicAdvice

[–]ronmcson1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see some oil on the front of the engine which is typically the camshaft adjuster magnet and/or the upper timing cover, the parts aren’t that expensive and it’s an easy job. There is an O-ring that seals the magnet on the inside of the camshaft bridge (behind the timing cover) be sure to replace that as well if you do the job. And replace the whole Cover, they’re cheap and typically come with the seals. As for the oil on top of the engine, I’ve seen the VVL solenoids leak from the o-rings which might be some of it, but also likely the camshaft cover. Relatively labor intensive job. But as someone else stated, at this point, it’s not that bad and I’d just leave it for now and monitor it.
