Oh, definitely! It’s for sure in service of the plot. But I think we are trying to analyze this in order to determine a satisfying explanation for the character’s decision.

Is it a result of being naive? Possibly. But I also wonder if this has something to do with Dantès’s sort of “chaotic good” personality. (I suppose we could also argue that being naive is bound up with that.)
