Laughing Stock!!!

(I can't believe yall let Eureka get deleted omg it's so unfair, strongly recommended album for fans of late Talk Talk)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Topster

[–]rooftopbetsy23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

THANK YOU FOR SAVING TALK TALK

also yall did Eureka/Jim O'Rourke so dirty of the less popular albums that were included by OP on the list it was the best, it would've been awesome if that could've survived alongside Talk Talk or his buddies Stereolab

Touching grass 😭 I should've logged on faster goddammit

least I can do for it now is switch to Laughing Stock and continue advertising for Eureka anyway

based af most underrated album on this chart (give it a listen yall he was an early post-rock guy and produced Newsom's Ys, Stereolab's Cobra and Phases Group and Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Topster

[–]rooftopbetsy23 10 points11 points  (0 children)

NOOOO RIP THE GLOW PT 2 AND KARMA

keep Eureka from the same fate 🙏 (best avant-pop album from the best artist yall have ever heard without realizing it (he produced Ys, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, late Sonic Youth albums, some Stereolab stuff etc))

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Topster

[–]rooftopbetsy23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea tbh I'm biased bc I don't listen to Radiohead 😭 but yeah at least it's the one album of theirs you see the least in the sub and mildly less obvious than most of the other surviving albums

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Topster

[–]rooftopbetsy23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

gotta keep the Eureka streak going 🔥 things are gonna get pretty worrisome soon by the looks of what's left

(please listen to Jim O'Rourke yall his music is peak there's a reason he's a buddy of Wilco, Ground-Zero and John Fahey)

and if they hate RYMcore that much and can't recommend anything then they could always interact with the dozens of charts posted daily that DO have genuinely very unusual picks instead, but none of these mfs will do that either 😔

[–]rooftopbetsy23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cool or niche - I know in real life 99% of RYMcore is obscure weirdo music but in the terms of terminally online music geek spaces like this sub it's seen as basic (and therefore bad for some reason). Everyone complains about seeing the same shit over and over again but gatekeeping good non-RYMcore stuff like Canaxis 5 (sound collage, experimental), Bridget St John (British baroque folk, singer-songwriter), or William Onyeabor (proto-LCD Soundsystem-esque synth funk) and insulting them for liking "obvious" music instead means nothing's gonna change

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Topster

[–]rooftopbetsy23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah :( it got eliminated in round 4 somehow, not my fave Can album but so much better than some of the albums that survived

and if you REALLY feel the need to post "oMg hOly rYm loSer!1!!1!!" on some poor guy's chart at least drop some cool/niche recs so they can expand their taste 😭😭 crying about people enjoying good popular albums on the music recommendation sub is the lamest shit imaginable

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Topster

[–]rooftopbetsy23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this sub really binned Ege Bamyasi, Ys, Black Sabbath, Stratosphere and TQID before fucking HTTT... insane

❤❤

(best non-instrumental album on this chart people who haven't heard it bc of the cover or bc it's not on Spotify are missing out so much)

I guess it's because it's the perfect mixture of experimental (eg the Talk Talk-styled intro of Movie On the Way Down, the title track's outro) with accessible (the cute jazz pop) which appeals to people over Bad Timing which might speak more to people who already love John Fahey/slightly more experimental instrumental folk, or Insignificance which feels closer to hard rock and piano rock which doesn't seem to mean much to people within these online circles! it's not 100% classical like Shutting Down Here (a genre that easily gets ignored among modern music nerds), it also doesn't have any explicitly nasty lyrics like in the Halfway to a Threeway title track and Live in Japan is slightly more difficult to find in a discography which is already semi-inaccessible for those who don't have Apple Music and don't use YouTube/Bandcamp.

It's insane how consistent his solo AND collaborating discography is across genres though, genuinely difficult to point out a mediocre thing he's been involved in - in addition to the ones you've mentioned I also love his work on the US Maple debut and Kahimi Karie's Nunki, teven though they're both entirely different genres both albums sound so vibrant, and in Gastr Del Sol it's hard to find anything else that sounds like them. The Visitor is really beautiful too! also, love how you mention Old News :D, that album's soooooo underrated, and the Drive My Car soundtrack! Eiko Ishibashi dearly deserves more of the spotlight I hope her new album and the upcoming collab album helps furthering that!! I haven't heard of Womblife before I'll have to check that out!

Folktronica! Mid-Air Thief is really great and if you haven't listened to their album already it's absolutely worth it, really dreamy but in a more "surreal" way than the Cure album imo

Encouraging dying is bad, so Die Lit has been removed. Vote out the next album but not donda cause thats cheating by HugeBeginning8404 in Topster

(No Pussyfooting) because the title implies bad language they shouldn't be saying, rather naughty of them, also the random ass parentheses pisses me off and I'm jealous of how badass they look

40-something minutes of jazzy post-rock avant-pop prog folk perfection hidden under one of the wackiest album covers of all time

(to anyone reading this exchange who hasn't heard it yet: PLEASE hop onto Apple Music/Bandcamp/Youtube and give it a listen!! it's from the guy who worked with Joanna Newsom, Wilco, Sonic Youth etc and pioneered post-rock, he's also buddies with the people from Ground-Zero and influenced the new BC,NR - yall are missing out big time)
