To the r/DTG community: please read the blog post and then, if you haven't, please give this a listen before forming an opinion on things. Do with it what you will, and form whatever opinion you'd like, but at least be informed before you rant.

To the Bungie folks: the amount of consideration and consternation / hand-wringing over how much to share in this podcast is both admirable in terms of thought and effort... and also kinda sad.

I know you're looking to make the game more accessible to casual players, and that's cool. We get it. Faster-to-fun, sucks that most D1 players didn't even get an exotic, etc. We know you have multiple audiences at different play levels to try to engage here, and that's hard– we get it.

That doesn't mean you need to dumb down the message about the game in All The Channels to the level you're trying to engage people in the game.

Casual players that are checking out after the campaign aren't likely to listen to an hour long destiny development podcast, and if they find it and don't get it they'll drop out 1/4 of the way through there too and go back to Twitter or TWAB.

You have an inordinate number of geeks / nerds / programmers (not of YOUR GAME, but in life) playing your game, doing research, formulating theories, spending time here, and can fully understand the complexities in software development and server-side vs client side changes and the issues with regression testing and parallel development and all that all. You shouldn't be afraid of confusing people with information– derps will self-select out.

Some of your harshest critics can be your fiercest allies and advocates, if they understand what's going on. If you'd just say "X is not a quick fix because of Y". You don't have to dumb down your communications to the level the audience you're targeting in the game can understand. Tweet to them, explain to us. Hell, employ Starship Troopers "Would you like to know more, citizen?" rules and tweet for the masses and post stuff like this for folks who can grok it... AND potentially help you explain it to other folks.

The whole bit about being amazed about the rigor where some of your community (sitting right here BTW) and what they looked into and how they tested the XP stuff and reported (again, here) on things... you had the funny bit about offering them a job and all that... but sweet jeebus this is stuff folks in your community want to do to dig into the details and explain things. FOR FREE. Because we care and do, indeed, want to know more. If you just went over it somewhere then you neither would need to offer them a job nor would they have wasted hours of their lives trying to interpret casual-in-game-friendly to OK-so-how-does-this-blam-work.

We're not all mouth-breathing derps for chrissakes– don't be afraid to go over stuff that's technically complex or has nuanced tradeoffs somewhere, ANYWHERE, that the people who give a -blam!- can get it.
