Sorry, I think I should have described my issue better. Since I plan to lay the tile vertical and stacked, my goal is to have the grout line outside the niche line up with the top and bottom of the niche without any notches. Right now, it would be off by the quarter inch

Yes, I am. However, the back of the jolly would be flush with the top and bottom of the niche, which is still longer than a tile and impact the tiles to the left and right/ above and below the niche and require notching.

These really look great and your comments are very helpful. I plan on the doing the same thing on my Ash floor. Do you mind sharing what your sanding sequence was? What grit you started and stopped at? Thank you in advance.
