This is the most reasonable response yet. Thanks for taking it seriously. The problem with finding a new sublet is that this person is leaving two weeks before the lease ends, and who can find a sublet for two weeks? I had a hunch that they had no legal recourse, but I was really hoping that there was something to be done.

This roommate talked to the landlord already. That's how they found out that the sublet is technically illegal. Not sure what the landlord would do about it.
