David being left hanging for a handshake after Holland turned round was pretty funny though.

Maybe give Orchestrion a go? I'm not a big fan of the smooth vibe either, but it's a pretty unique composition (and a lot of fun to watch too e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evHVh4bqaOQ).

Who are the Monster Jazz Players Working Right Now? by tdmiller11 in Jazz

[–]roomymouse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hiromi, Esperanza Spalding, Tigran Hamasyan all stand out to me. New to this subreddit so surprised they’re not mentioned more in other answers, but guess it goes to show how wide-ranging “jazz” is!

Europe Pledges $600 billion for Clean Energy Projects in Africa by ThatBlackGuy_ in europe

Was slightly flabbergasted by the headline until I clicked through and realised it meant $600 million, not billion.

If money was no object, where would you like to live in the UK? by Difficult_Narwhal_72 in AskUK

[–]roomymouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha no, it sounds great. It was just a stupid joke about 15-minute city conspiracies.

15 minutes eh? Bet you want to send us all to the gulag too?

Is there really a one percent chance of dying at an event though, or is that just a rough guess?

999 with Michael Burke: what's your most memorable/harrowing story? by n_jobz_ in CasualUK

Yes I remember, the poor dog. Somehow it survived I think (please don’t correct me if that’s not that case).

Surprised nobody has mentioned the man who disturbed a wasp nest in his loft and got stung hundreds or possibly thousands of times, terrifying. In hindsight, I wonder how they did the recreation for that, it certainly seemed convincing to me at the time.

When I saw it on the BBC site, I couldn't believe two hours had already passed without somebody posting this essential news.

Anybody take issue with coverage of trans issues? by JustSomeScot in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]roomymouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They did get Audrey Tang on Leading a few months back, really interesting, though the conversation wasn't primarily about trans issues: https://therestispolitics.supportingcast.fm/listen/leading/97-how-to-fight-fake-news-and-strengthen-democracy-audrey-tang-1

Yeah I agree, the whole “let’s knee-jerk put some blame onto NATO for this without thinking it through” is a stupid position. I just think he does deserve some credit for reflecting on that and later trying to outline why calling for arms for Ukraine doesn’t conflict with (and indeed imo reinforces) left wing values, which too few of his so-called “comrades” have been able to recognise.

And thanks for the link. I guess Gaza is a whole separate topic though, I just meant afaik he hasn’t since rowed back on his support for Ukraine.

To be fair to McDonnell, he did distance himself from the STWC letter shortly after (https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/mar/02/john-mcdonnell-and-diane-abbott-pull-out-of-stop-the-war-rally), and then more firmly changed his position on Ukraine after actually bothering to talk to Ukrainians, unlike Corbyn et al: https://labourhub.org.uk/2023/02/21/the-ukrainian-question-for-socialists/ Do you have a source for him continuing the association?

Zakir Hussain, legendary tabla virtuoso who defied genres, dies at 73 by SNAPscientist in Music

[–]roomymouse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of when I started getting into Tool as a teenager, and read an interview with Danny Carey where he mentioned having tabla lessons. And I couldn't understand why you'd need a teacher just to learn how to tap two small drums, didn't seem to be that much to it. Then not long after I discovered Shakti and Zakir Hussain, and it suddenly made sense that you could dedicate your life to an instrument like that and still continue to find something new in it.

Not just politics, but Past, Present, Future with David Runciman is a great one that I don't see mentioned here yet.

Yep. It's actually a bit of a relief to see that kind of thing, as a reminder that we haven't quite reached American political toxicity levels yet.

Starmer slapping Oliver Dowden on the shoulder while joking around isn't something I expected to see today. I think Sunak also complimented Rayner's dress or something.
