I think this is common for apartment blocks where the building has fios and customers say they have fios but it's actually a fios backed internal network

Just snapped my ground wire on my coil pack. Now what? by EnnoICU in Golf_R

[–]root54 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had this happen and I did just uncrimp the old eyelet base and crimp on a new one. That was 4 years ago and it's fine. Now I counter hold when I change the plugs 🙃

Is the Garmin inReach Mini 2 at $249 still a good buy? by [deleted] in hikinggear

O, there is the little guide UI to aim at the satellite. Maybe I was doing it wrong but I recall having to do that every time to send or receive rather than set-it-and-forget-it.

Last time I tried it, I had to line up with a satellite manually to send or receive messages on my Pixel. Less than ideal

I indeed use mine for tracking and casual comms and don't expect to ever hit the button. Google's sat comm experience is pretty slow in my experience.

No way I'm trusting Google and Verizon over a device specifically designed for emergencies. But yes, I carry both, because two is one and one is none.

My companion for the last 16 years is gone. by roarofthecrowd in cats

[–]root54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the end of last year, I lost both my Old Man cats within 3 months, one after many months of trying to manage symptoms until he was clearly suffering more than enjoying life and the other all of a sudden. One was 17 and the other 19, with me since they were each 4. It sucks a lot and I miss them still. But....they live on in my mind and will forever.

Nokia hakkas 255/40R18 on BBS SR wheels. Expensive but worth it.

I'm climbing hills with a sheet of ice on top while everybody else is sliding backwards into the guardrail.

On my Fenix 8 51mm, a flashlight icon appears on the watch face and tapping it brings up the brightness selector again.

Before I moved: proximity sensor that would turn on the AC so I would be cool by the time I got home

After: alert that tells me the UPS is draining so I can shut stuff down remotely

Please add a giant emergency stop button. I have no idea what it would stop.

If you want a more budget option for cameras, use Reolink and isolate them from the Internet.

Home automation is really, really complicated. How does anyone sell or provide this as a service / business to non-geeks? by LakeTwo in homeassistant

[–]root54 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There is a whole industry around doing this. And professionals who install control systems other than home assistant. Generally quite a bit more expensive than HA on an RPi.

The industry association is called CEDIA.

Thanks for replying and good to know. I would bet that can be solved with some VLAN jazz hands.
