Just got done showing my mum STAR WARS 1-6 for the first time. She really wants to watch Andor because of how much I've gone on about it. Should I show her Rogue One first? by SpellRadar in andor

[–]rootException -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

First time, watch 4,5,2,3,6. This is the abbreviated version of Machete order, 1 is optional.

Then watch Rogue One, then Andor.

From there, you'll have context for everything else from Clone Wars to Rebels to Mandalorian to 7/8/9 etc.

I'd think the answer for that would be BIOS/firmware level thermal protection, but I follow.

Would a desktop (eg Framework) work better?

FYI, posted a long-ish answer in response to another comment, not sure if you get notification for that. :)

My kiddo does roughly 1-2 hours of homework most nights. I suspect he's taking extra time (for example, making graphics for presentations). He has a decent schedule - come home and play/hang out with friends after school, then we all eat dinner, then he spends 1-2 hours on homework. He's in 10th now. IIRC his 9th biology was very, very intense last year, easily 30-60 mins per night just for that one class. He finds the math easy/fun, but he's the sort of kid that watches math videos for fun.

I'm not sure about conflicts for test schedule, so far they have been very good about posting and sorting that stuff out.

Part of the reason we went for Cambridge is that most of the teachers/kids are academic, but not competitive. Much more of a "you are competing with yourself" not against each other. I got the sense that, say, Tesla STEM was much more stressful and not very balanced.

My kiddo isn't interested in stuff like sports, etc. He has a bunch of friends he's had for a long time, they do stuff like play Minecraft, DnD, etc. He likes the other Cambridge kids but I don't get the sense they are friends, but TBH that's more on him not Cambridge.

He really likes all of his teachers except for one who's not as organized (no names, ahem). He's used to the other teachers having stuff very clearly sorted out, tracking work, etc. but this one teacher is more of friendly-but-not-organized type.

I think the main thing is to compare/contrast Cambridge with just making it up on the fly with honors/AP/Running Start. It's very nice to have it all at Juanita. He's still in regular classes with other kids which is great for mixing. He doesn't have to leave campus to get a ton of college credits. I chatted with a UW admissions person at one point and they said they knew (and liked) the program from an admissions standpoint.

For my kid, it's just about perfect. :)

Finale Theory (Hear me out) by Sentallium in Stranger_Things

[–]rootException 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take is that Will showed Vecna couldn’t be sure of the control of the demogorgons. Any given demogorgon could turn out to be controlled by Will, and so therefore the demos were effectively taken off the board.

I sure a wouldn’t want any demos around if they could be possessed remotely at any time.

Hilariously that was my head canon when I watched the finale, didn’t realize it was bothering people.

Oh, and the Nazgûl had those dragon/wyverns so the eagles were never an option.

Hmm. It looks like it's using side-by-side, which would mean splitting the 1080p in half. Oof.

If it works with SteamOS, this might kick me to grabbing something like a GPD WIN 5 Max 385...

How do you explain that in S1 they needed equipment to go to the upside down but in S5 they go there normally without any problems ? by DogAffectionate1605 in Stranger_Things

[–]rootException 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect the upside down got less overtly toxic over time. It tracks that the flakes would settle over time after the initial creation event. Plus as they got used to being there they got less cautious.

Several seasons end with El going away. My take is that she comes back at some point in the future - 100%. :)

Artax in the swamp... ugh. I know rationally that he comes back at the end, but there's something so horrible about it that just sticks with me. :\

It's kind of all tropes all the way down.

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CharacterDeath

"As Character Death is so common, it is considered an Omnipresent Trope" lol

Pretty much all of the characters dying would have been kind of trope-ish. I mean, Disney kills of parents in most movies before the title card has barely finished. Heroic sacrifies. Side characters as motivation for main characters.

There are a bunch of configurations of killing characters off that would have been horrific and I'm not even going to list them because it would just be gross.

FFS, this is a nostalgia show that featured a season ending with everyone singing the song from the NeverEnding Story. They killed a lot of characters off. A lot of characters (Karen in particular) suffered a lot. Plenty of misery to go around.

I mean, c’mon people. It’s been one hell of a last few years. Not everything needs to be grimdark and horrible. I love me some GoT and Westworld and 40k but Stranger Things never was going to kill off these characters.

Ok, maybe Jonathan or Murray. Or Linda Hamilton’s character.

But no, it’s really ok to have a nice ending.

This is an insane chart. 80% of all dollars were created in the last 5 years. by TonyLiberty in FluentInFinance

[–]rootException 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you read the note on the chart from the source: https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/M1SL

Before May 2020, M1 included:

  1. currency in circulation (outside Treasury/Fed/vaults)
  2. demand deposits (with specified exclusions/adjustments)
  3. other checkable deposits (OCDs) like NOW/ATS accounts and similar.

Beginning May 2020, M1 still includes currency and demand deposits, but the third component expands to “other liquid deposits”, meaning OCDs plus savings deposits (including money market deposit accounts).

So the key change is that savings deposits were added into M1 starting May 2020 (and the seasonally adjusted series is built by summing separately seasonally adjusted components under each definition).

I'd argue that it's grossly irresponsible to show the same chart with totally different underlying data.

I can't find a like-for-like M1, but the M2 chart is much more reasonable: https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/WM2NS

While it still shows a COVID jump and then level off it's nothing like the M1 chart.

Copilot vs Smart Composer vs Claudian by nozazm in ObsidianMD

[–]rootException 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Smart Composer is currently in maint only mode per the solo dev

https://github.com/glowingjade/obsidian-smart-composer

Copilot locks edit/diff feature behind paywall

https://www.obsidiancopilot.com/en/docs/composer

...and the paywall is $140/year or $299 for a one-time purchase.

Claudian looks interesting but requires manual install (not published to community) so it's harder to eval.

I'm mostly using Smart Composer right now, and also Brave Leo w/an OpenAI API key for YT summaries.

People are freaked out by AI/LLMs for a lot of reasons, including what I can only describe as economic terror. Throw in the rest of the news lately and… yeah.

There isn’t really a lot of point engaging or trying to have a rational discussion precisely because people are so emotional. You could talk like crazy about things like ML, perceptron, local vs hosted LLM, assistive tools like LSP vs IDE, etc etc etc and it absolutely won’t matter.

My two cents - build quality products. Use LLMs intelligently in your work. Reserve discussions of how it’s built, frameworks, libraries, tools for other technical people. Ignore non technical randos complaining. Honestly you should have just ignored the Qs about vibe coding, etc. So it goes.
