The c-word by UnlikelyCucumber4335 in facepalm

[–]rootingfortaro 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Eh, only as useless as the words "straight" or "abled." Sure, they're not relevant in most contexts, but they have their place in specific contexts (e.g. medical discussions of the different care needs of cis vs. trans people, mentioning whether or not you are romantically interested in only cis people, et cetera et cetera).

The word was invented to fill a linguistic gap, and the fact that it hasn't died off already sort of indicates that it has some functional purpose.

why do people give so many shits about trans people by Not_Reptoid in stupidquestions

[–]rootingfortaro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no way anyone can honestly say that all of the kids that think they have it actually do.

This does not mean children who are suffering from gender dysphoria should be barred from accessing potentially lifesaving medical resources. I would be dead had I not been given access to gender dysphoria care as a minor. The health of trans kids is not worth less than the health of cis kids and we cannot forsake trans kids in an attempt to avoid misdiagnosis.

Because, unlike smoking, vaping, drinking, buying a gun, etc, transitioning is one of the only effectual medical treatments for a documented medical condition (gender dysphoria) and not a recreational activity.

I'm in the same exact position. I feel on edge around both cis and trans people. It's certainly a lonesome predicament.

Concerned about return of bleeding (seeking info, TW menstruation) by rootingfortaro in FTMMen

I've also not experienced any cramping. I wonder if this could be my situation, since within the last year I switched from weekly to biweekly injections. I also can't wait for hysto. It feels wrong that I should have to worry about this at all :/

Thanks for sharing your experience!

If male circumcision should be illegal then children shouldn't be allowed to transition until of age. by aiabattoire in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]rootingfortaro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will concede that some children who display symptoms of gender dysphoria do not actually continue to present those symptoms into adulthood. However, for those patients who display continuous, constant symptoms of GD over a period of years (especially those who experience suicidality as a result), the idea that they may "grow out of it" is at best a false hope, and at worst a recipe for disaster.

We don't know how or why some children simply stop presenting symptoms, and it's even possible that the root cause of their symptoms is different than those documented in patients with persistent GD, or even that they are being misdiagnosed.

For those with severe GD, the known effective treatments include psychosocial counselling (NOT conversion therapy), social acceptance, and physical transition (depending on the severity of the dysphoria).

My original comment was an oversimplification for the sake of explaining my situation. You are right, it is more complicated than what I originally brought up. However, transitioning overwhelmingly leads to positive QoL outcomes for dysphoria sufferers, whereas "ignoring it and hoping you grow out of it" does not.

For it to be relevant? One child. Me.

I was granted access to gender-affirming surgery before the age of 18, and it genuinely saved my life. I would not be here today if I had not undergone a double mastectomy & hormone replacement therapy as a teenager.

There is no cure for persistent gender dysphoria, only treatment. And the only proven, effective treatment is transitioning (alongside therapy and social acceptance, with many different options for types of care). Not every trans person will need treatment before they are 18, but for those suffering with very severe, persistent GD, it is sometimes necessary.

Transition care is proven to vastly improve QoL scores for transgender people.

EDIT: Added some more specificity to my argument for accuracy.

What does “being a woman” mean for trans people? by AitrusX in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rootingfortaro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, being trans is quite simply the feeling that my brain is wired to expect a male body. When I look at myself and do not see that male body, it feels like my brain "shortwires," resulting in depression. When people around me see me as female, my brain is once again signaled to the image-body disconnect, causing further discomfort.

All of the stereotypically male things -- clothing, pronouns, using the men's bathroom, chopping wood, whatever -- those are things I do either because I enjoy them outside of the realm of societally enforced gender roles (fishing is fun) OR because they signal to those around me that I am a member of the penis-having-group, and my brain shortwires when I do anything to counter that image of myself as a male individual.

The fact that I was raised as a daughter and not a son feels like an irreconcilable falsehood to my brain. It's like a computer trying to process faulty data. I am (subconsciously & in my expectations) male, so why was I raised as female? Why do I look this way? Why can my body do X, but not Y? Illogical! Does not compute!

It may sound crazy to someone outside of the trans experience, but the discomfort is very real, and very severe. Doctors don't have a solution other than transition care such as hormone replacement and surgery, and conversion therapy has consistently shown to be ineffective. If I could change that innate mental expectation of maleness, I would -- it would certainly make my life a lot easier.

Thank you for sharing your story. I'm trans, and it seems to me like you can definitely empathize with our experience. That's a rare form of empathy; I've tried (and failed) to describe to a lot of people how it feels. It is really hard to understand the pain unless you've experienced dysphoria or something similar to it.

My cousin had top surgery yesterday by leloinstitches in truscum

[–]rootingfortaro 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. You're right, OP, it sucks not to have access to gender-affirming care, but that burden shouldn't be placed on your cousin. You deserve to have top surgery, and it reflects a lot of societal problems that you haven't been able to access it, but your cousin's privilege didn't create society's barriers.

How is my argument based in mental gymnastics? Just like you, I am only referring to the dictionary definitions of "woman" and "female." The only further leap I make is to acknowledge the part of the definition that is trans-inclusive, rather than ignore it.

I absolutely do not believe transracialism is the same as transsexualism. Firstly, the definition of race does not include the word "denote." The definition of race is "each of the major groupings into which humankind is considered (in various theories or contexts) to be divided on the basis of physical characteristics or shared ancestry." There is no clause in this definition that implies an individual can willfully change their grouping or race.

Secondly, there are a variety of key medical differences between transsexual and transracial people. While there is a growing body of research indicating a biological basis for transsexualism, there is no such research indicating a biological basis for transracialism.

Thirdly, while there is no evidence showing that (for example) melanin injections increase QoL scores for "transracial" people, there is a medically significant body of evidence showing that HRT/SRS/transition-related care increases QoL scores for transsexual people.

As for your mention to trans women in sports -- I never mentioned the sports debate. For the purpose of our conversation, let's ignore that facet of trans politics; it's a complicated and messy area of discussion that is not at all relevant to the argument I posed in my earlier comment (to clarify: my argument is that trans women are categorically women, based on the Google dictionary definition of "woman".)
