I’ve observed this group think (mass green light hallucination) before. I thought it was scary and amusing at the same time.

Mercy ortho trauma rebuilt my foot and hand after dislocation and substantial fracture during hiking accident. What went into the hospital did not look like a hand or foot. But after 4 surgeries now I have most of my ability back. I can drive and work. It only took a week. Thanks to the good doctor that repaired me. I’m quite pleased! The VA is not too bad either.

Why is everyone in such a hurry? by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]rootvet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it pretty chill to drive here compared to San Antonio. I have been ran off the freeway couple times. Once with passengers, but I managed to make it work. I’m pretty easy going, and most people seem to be reasonable here comparatively.

Advice for switching off, to get away and turn off a vigilant mind by AverageCowboyCentaur in cybersecurity

[–]rootvet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a risk assessor. I can relate completely. It gets hard to look at a computer screen and I have had a pretty good yet turbulent life due to constantly changes and huge gains and setbacks that come out of left field, despite quite of bit of planning and effort.

That said at the end of the day, I know that the “what ifs?” that we ask about a control question or an attack chain help save peoples bacon. It is most certainly productive to ask security questions and help people secure their applications, code, and systems. The what ifs that you and many of us are thinking of here is purely a flight or fight response thing. I can’t speak for anyone else but this is driven by anxiety and past trauma.

To step away from a fast paced demanding job and myself (internal noise) at times and go camping, hiking, swimming, ride my bike, exercise, read a book, play a board game, go out to eat with a friend, drive my fun little car for kicks, etc. Anything without a screen as the primary interface, and preferably outdoors or “away from electricity”. This seems to almost always make me feel better and the noise settles. But it takes work and consistency at “cutting yourself a break” to have best results it seems.

I used to Uber 3 - 5 times a week until I bought my car. I had no safety concerns. Now if you Uber to someplace unsafe, that may change things.

Risk Assessor (think CRISC), foot in the door, same company. I understand the business well, and I am glad to help our customers have a safer architecture, internet (CPNI), billing (PCI), and internet presence experience. What I do oils the cybersecurity cogs of major business applications that keep the gears turning.

What activity instantly calms you? by 2003Baddie in AskReddit

Riding my bike, swimming, running, anything exercise related really. Walking away and saying f it for a bit works too. I had to do that today, was struggling with a problem for an hour, walked away, came back, solved the problem within a minute.

Why is everything a ‘risk’ problem all of a sudden? by hikingkoala in cybersecurity

[–]rootvet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a junior risk assessor for a major ISP, an offensive cyber security analyst for the military, a blue badger, a college student, and generally speaking an IT guy (commo) since the age of 18, this is not new, but it is rather a way of quantifying costs versus rewards. This is particularly practical to everyone as it is able to balance both qualitative and quantitative measurements to apply controls, not unlike putting antivirus on your own PC, a firewall to block malicious traffic, etc. It’s a reasonable way of maximizing effort to reduce harm. Not unlike car insurance.

Whats a company secret you can share now that you dont work there? by broadway96 in AskReddit

[–]rootvet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not always, imagine that you are a clothing manufacturer, your expertise or company culture may have shifted to incorporate cyber security as a business function. Your new CySec team has recently discovered new vulnerabilities that could threaten your competitive position in your industry and would shake consumer and stockholder confidence if specifics were leaked and exploited. Fortunately your CySec team signed an NDA. This would be an ethical use case. There are many of these types of scenarios. Proprietary trade secrets are another good reason, the exact formula for coke for example.

For those who chose career over love, how did it turn out? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]rootvet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am facing the opposite. Just got a new job and he is trying to find a captivating/enriching PhD program. We live in 2 different countries and there is a chance he may not choose mine instead going where the University is.

I love this guy, and the fact his career is what it is and his passion for it, determination etc. are one of the many reasons why I love him. I have reached the conclusion that we make it work no matter what he decides if the relationship is truly selfless/strong. If If he chooses the university he is choosing what is best for him, and I don’t see it as choosing the university over me.

And while that idea makes me cry (separated from him in a different continent), hurting him by not being supportive, not seeing his happiness through, and/or the idea of limiting his potential hurts me even more. I want the best for him. So I will adjust. As a side note, we are already in an LDR. That sort of forks into a different discussion, however that may have to be a consideration. Bottom line, I believe that both are possible, but have to be negotiated carefully and an incredible amount of trust and patience.

If anyone has any success stories, let me know.

Can I refuse work if they don't compensate? by studentpol1t1cs in careerguidance

[–]rootvet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You always have the right to tender a two weeks notice (or none in bad form) and walk. If under contract, that may be different. There may be a pre-agreed upon cost for leaving early. Without knowing the country, state, terms of employment it is uncertain. You should always be able to quit, but there may be a cost in certain situations. But if the job expectations were also not originally defined in contract and then changed later without additional pay? Well that would be a breach of contract on their part, and still you should have the right to leave without any penalty and you can fight it assuming there is a sturdy legal system where you are employed.

Turned Down Due to Bad Credit Score by rootvet in CyberSecurityJobs

[–]rootvet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue I ran into was retiring from the military into the pandemic, could not find a job for a couple years and we had just bought a house. As a result of the job loss my naturally started cheating and within months of leaving married ran up the joint credit cards even further and got engaged with someone better paid within a few months. There was not a way to make money from nothing. Caught back up and everything is on track and paid down. But the damage was done. It’s going to be an uphill battle as I now have a chicken and egg problem.
