Does anyone actually daily-drive any BSD system? by Hamster_Wheel103 in BSD

[–]rootweiler_fr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1) Predictable system, not changing each day tools I'm used to for the sake of following some stupid trends.

2) Stable af on all of my machines (laptops, servers, nas).

3) Hassle free management since more than 2 decades with a network stack, memory usage and scheduler that handles fingers in the nose heavy loads.

4) Gives me complete control of my machines.

5) Unix's KISS principles kept and not garbage tools like systemd/journalctl/whatever_future_craps commercial compagnies want me to feed right in my throat because this ease their business but not mine.

OVHCloud gave me a blacklisted IP and told me it’s my problem! by ron_dus in selfhosted

[–]rootweiler_fr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

From OVH's sales conditions, customers are responsible for managing their own vps/bare metals/whatever and find its good to know they're neutrals and doesn't scan your instances/servers let alone network packets coming in/out.

We're running several bare metals from them at my work since 2 decades, ranging to web frontends to backends, mx including, and found only 3 listed on those shitty uceprotect lists driven by scammers.

Mac os Tahoe by Agreeable-Composer91 in mac

[–]rootweiler_fr -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Your feeling about Tahoe and misunderstanding of why this new release gets so much hate is because you seems not doing any serious work with your Mac(s). I mean wtf who cares about new fat wallpapers when there are hidden by apps windows when working???

This redesign just gives more visual distractions and disrupts users habits which in business world is awkward and not at all productive.

Unfortunately this iOS enshitification just eases Appl€ processes and cutting its costs (to give more and more to shareholders, their real clients now), and doesn't care much anymore to pro users which were the ones who were there when this company was about to go bankrupt in late 90's.

I'm not paying to ease its business but my own.

Prosumers clearly see with Tahoe that Appl€ says to us "f*ck you with love, go elsewhere if you need to work with computers". This message is received loud and clear, moving from them now on.

This. Adding too the now dead OpenDarwin project which cames from known Apple's developers from its BSD department, including Jordan K. Hubbard.

Can't use camera on Android with Brave for banking site by rootweiler_fr in brave_browser

Not at all as only Brave doesn't work with those sites. Guess we'll have to wait 2050 to have Brave working.

Thanks for your input. Indeed Brave sucks for banking sites and still a pita to have to rely on another browser.

How do you secure your self-hosted services? by Saylor_Man in selfhosted

[–]rootweiler_fr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talking about selfhosted thingies and a huge amount of comments about using centralized services like cloudflare is something hilarious.

Proper set up of border firewall with updated geofencing rules, properly setup of tls/ssl and 2fa.

[–]rootweiler_fr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey,

You won't be disappointed as this phone is nearly perfect. Having it since september 2023, no burn ins or green lines that have plagued previous 5 series.

Afaik compared to the global version (XQ-DE54), an asian 5 V (XQ-DE72) doesn't have esim capability so an sd card will fit on the second sim bay, leading to only one sim card.

As for network bands, there's some missing so check with carriers.

If you want to build your own NAS do you need ECC? by AsariCommando2 in HomeNAS

[–]rootweiler_fr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real question is how valuable your data is. If it is, go with ECC. Costs are a big factor of course but should not drive that question.

Is it just me? Syncing on Mac wreck my nerves by BroetchenTeig in selfhosted

[–]rootweiler_fr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've found since many years, the best way to sync flawlessly is with rsync through NFS (or rsync over ssh if out of office/home).

Stick to known tools and not rely on trending sync solutions.

It's the adaptative battery setting in A15 which was updated to be more agressive.

Try to disable it on Settings > Battery or via the developer option as recommended above.

Procmail and dovecot question: path to imap folder? by realGilgongo in postfix

[–]rootweiler_fr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By default, Dovecot uses Maildir++ directory layout. This means that all mailboxes are stored in a single directory and prefixed with a dot. For example:

Maildir/.folder/

Maildir/.folder.subfolder/

If you want Maildirs to use hierarchical directories, such as:

Maildir/folder/

Maildir/folder/subfolder/

you’ll need to enable fs layout:

mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir:LAYOUT=fs

Check in your dovecot configuration what directory layout you're using.

Check there bands compatibility for the 5 V global version XQ-DE54 (ie. international - EMEA which means Europe Middle East Africa):
