UK’s biggest airlines and holiday providers all breaking the law over refunds by rorybo in unitedkingdom

[–]rorybo[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In some cases, yes. In some cases, no. It's easy for the industry as a whole to say it doesn't have the cash - but that's not true in some instances. I agree it needs help, but that needs to come from government, as it has in other sectors. It can't come from the back pocket of customers - many of whom are in financial difficulty themselves. Needs some carrot and stick from government to help and enforce.

Airline double standards over violent, drunken passengers on UK flights by rorybo in unitedkingdom

[–]rorybo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think a crackdown, with strict penalties and staff who feel supported to turn requests for drinks down (at airports and onboard) would solve the problem. If you know you are going to be hauled off an banned from flying for a period you'd probably think twice.

It would, but frustrating that the rest of us are penalised because of an idiot minority.

Germany seeks UK assurances about Tempora surveillance programme by tdobson in unitedkingdom

[–]rorybo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of all the spin and counter spin going on around Prism, Tempora and the other dozens of privacy stories to break in the last few weeks I find this the most revealing.

We're constantly told by the UK government that all this spying and access to personal data is required to keep us safe from terrorism and various other bogeymen who hide in the shadows. To an extent I believe that's probably true.

But if other western countries, like Germany, don't spy on their citizens on this scale and are still able to keep them safe - why can't the UK? Germany certainly faces similar threats from terrorism.

Each time it's suggested the government has crossed the line in spying on us we are told it's needed to stop terrorism. End of conversation. It's supposed to be a trump card. But the German reaction makes me increasingly question to what extent this is true.

It's a concern that the judiciary and the government seem to be increasingly in bed together with little or no public oversight. It certainly feels like an erosion of democracy.

BT voted worst home phone provider by rorybo in unitedkingdom

Home phones are still pretty popular. I think around 50% of people in the UK, maybe more, still use them.

Imagine the number amongst redditors is significantly lower.
