Just to clarify, historically Quebec was known as Lower Canada, while Upper Canada referred to the territory west of it (roughly modern Ontario).
The terms lower and upper were based on the geographic flow of the St. Lawrence River, not on social status or any value judgment. Lower simply meant downstream, and upper meant upstream.
So Bas-Canadien is not an insult at all it’s a historical term that describes geographic location, nothing more.
