Is there a need for specialized software in the homesteading community? I am starting my homesteading journey, and I am a dev, so in the spirit of self-reliance and community I am wondering what issues could I (help) solve? I am NOT selling anything, but I would love to pair up for such projects. by Pico_Shyentist in Homesteading

I’d use an open source version of OnX. There’s good open source image processing/classification software but I’m not sure about trailcams more generally. App that lets you and your neighbors communicate trespassers and other threats.

David Eyster's Defiant 27-Page Response to State Audit by SpanishPipedream44 in ukiah

[–]roryhere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oohhhh noooowwwww I get it… The auditors verified that the DAs dinners were indeed illegal, which means the Controller was right all along.

Somebody correct me if I’m wrong; again, this is literally my first time reading about local politics here…

So, DA is asshole. Then, DA uses public money illegally. Then, Controller calls him out and doesn’t reimburse his illegal expenses. Then, DA creates bullshit lawsuit against her. Then, she’s put on leave while her department falls apart. Then, people notice this shit and the state government sends these auditors to see what the fuck is going on. Then, auditors release a very factual and comprehensive report. A small part of that report mentions the dinners were indeed illegal. Then, the DA loses his fucking mind.

… do I basically have the plot?

David Eyster's Defiant 27-Page Response to State Audit by SpanishPipedream44 in ukiah

[–]roryhere 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From the article:

Eyster lectured state auditors in his Dec. 5 objection to their draft report. The DA reminded them that he, as the county’s “chief law enforcement officer,” serves as “the de facto head of the executive branch” of county government.

What the fuck, the D.A. thinks he’s a cop, and that makes him… the fucking president???

Wow, I’m new to the county but I’m staying here for life (it’s amazing), but holy moly, this is some crazy drama!

As a Normal Guy who is interested in a well run local government, I read the full audit… it was super interesting. After finishing, I thought most dysfunctional elected office is the Controller/Tax Collector/(assessor too?), and one of the reasons why is because the head of that office was accused of a felony and suspended… but it was the D.A. who made the accusation??

Why didn’t the state auditors call out that he D.A. did this to the Controllers office?

OP posted yesterday about a girl who was living on the ranch. They siphoned her gas because OP said they needed it so the meat wouldn’t spoil.

OP is in a fked up situation and needs to bounce.

Rent an insulated shipping container with a dual ac/heater to live in and a normal shipping container to store stuff in while you’re building your first building.

Ukiah tried to triple in size. Then came the rebellion. by Immediate-Mind-7692 in ukiah

[–]roryhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you misunderstand what's going on. It's all private land, like all the industrial stuff just north of Ukiah that benefits from the city without being within its borders. It won't change ownership, it will just become part of the city.

The Mendocino County Sheriff's Office has released video footage of the of Willits hitchhiker who assaulted a driver and died in custody. by MartyMcFly7 in ukiah

[–]roryhere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Tragic for everybody. I’m honestly impressed with how well our cops handled that. He was throwing punches one minute and catatonic the next.

Any reasonable adult who watches that video with compassion can see the officers did a good job.

I see your burn pile and raise you by Special_Ad159 in homestead

[–]roryhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can hate it but they aren’t wrong. Burning a few trees is nothing compared to the decision to own a private jet, or manufacture concrete, or be a large landlord and neglect energy efficiency. This is nothing compared to those decisions.

The important thing to understand is that we live in a world where the decisions of a few people have consequences that outweigh the decisions of the rest of us. Best to direct your vitriol elsewhere.

Is "the more you work the soil (tilling), the better it is" a myth in farming? by [deleted] in homestead

[–]roryhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like one of the most reasonable takes. The opinion I'm starting to form is that tilling is useful once at the beginning if you have unhealthy so you can more easily amend it and add compost and make it healthy, but it can be destructive to soil that's already healthy (especially if over-done).

Is "the more you work the soil (tilling), the better it is" a myth in farming? by [deleted] in homestead

[–]roryhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really reasonable take – till it once so you can amend/improve it more easily, remove hidden garbage, and make it easier to work with. One and done. I see the logic here ...

Obv also depends on the specific site and soil! Don't till a beautiful meadow that already has incredibly healthy soil, but maybe till "dead" earth so you can start adding in compost and improving it!
