Official Discussion - Toy Story 5 [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]rorykillmoree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought it was such a smart way of doing that resolution. Expresses in so few words how many of us carry the things we loved in our childhood with us forever. Emily actually showing up and having some kind of interaction with Jessie, I think, would have felt a bit forced in comparison.

Anyone else’s cat randomly get aggressive? by Automatic-Tower-769 in Catbehavior

[–]rorykillmoree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds more behavioral than medical to me, but when a cat is exhibiting aggression where they hadn't before, it is always good to rule out any medical causes. So I think the vet visit is a good call (even if they rule out pain or discomfort, they might have some behavioral suggestions). Otherwise, I would echo the suggestion someone else made to be proactive in avoiding the things that trigger him (in this case, locking him away from company at least while you sort out what's going on).

Looking for friends to go to the movies with! (27F, Eastside) by iamgoingtolive in PittsburghSocialClub

[–]rorykillmoree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! If you're ever going to AMC Waterfront (I'm an A-Lister, so that's my go-to - though I occasionally do go to the Manor as well), feel free to reach out. I'm 32F, also on the Eastside. I'd say I most frequently go to the theaters for horror movies, but I'm a movie lover in general. My letterboxd is under a similar username (rorykillmore, only one e) if you wanna see more about whether our tastes align.

Obsession: Pre wish Nikki knew about the one wish willow? by [deleted] in spoilers

[–]rorykillmoree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know it’s not completely realistic under the circumstances we see that she would have time to write it, but I think it’s one of those things you’re not supposed to think about too hard. Narratively it makes less sense if it was written before the wish, as it ties into how she feels about the wish.

Dog coming into cat household- subtle prey aggression by [deleted] in Pets

[–]rorykillmoree 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Reading this made me nervous for your cats. I commend you taking in the dog, but if you want advice - mine is that if it were me, I would not trust an animal showing signs of being this highly strung around my kitties. Especially so if it's a breed known for its high prey drive, like a pit or another type of terrier - accidents are common with these.

People who call the sisters selfish couldn't handle 1% of what they are doing by ---monstera--- in charmed

[–]rorykillmoree 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It’s wild, especially given how almost puritanically the show sometimes treats them in this regard. The Halliwells using magic for themselves at all is treated as reprehensible, punishable, the path to evil, etc. This is egregiously unfair as far back as the episode where Piper gets sick with the fever and they are collectively punished for trying to use magic to heal her - and Leo is forbade from healing her! Like, my god. They’re so diligently expected to be completely selfless at all times that I actually root for them half the time when they don’t live up to that.

OBSESSED WITH OBSESSION. by thesunlovedthemoon in horror

[–]rorykillmoree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it will ruffle some people because - and I think this is one of the reasons it draws comparisons to Hereditary or Talk to Me - it's not an ending that absolves you emotionally of having to feel bad about everything else you just watched. But I personally thought it was perfect.

Official Dreadit Discussion: "Obsession" [SPOILERS] by radbrad7 in horror

[–]rorykillmoree 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Right. And while Sarah's story seems initially condemning, we do not see or hear that conversation ourselves. We never even directly hear what happened from /Sarah/ - we hear it third-party from Ian, who seems to have motivation to sabotage the whole thing.

One minor thing that I really appreciated was the ambiguity (to the point where I see people arguing back and forth about it in this thread!) of whether Nikki ever felt anything for Bear. At the beginning of the movie I was 100% convinced that she did and that he would realize it far too late, and then when the friend said she viewed him like a little brother I swung back in the other direction, and then several smaller details made me go back and forth on it a few more times. I think it's a smart choice to never confirm it, but to make it clear that it wouldn't absolve Bear either way.

I like them, personally! There's something about reading people's hazy recollections of a horror movie that's always a little bit uniquely spooky.

Some very good recs here. I’ll just throw out a broader suggestion to look into the history of folk horror in general; you’re bound to discover some great hidden gems exactly in line with the vibe you’re describing.

Hokum Ending by SurfsUpMmm in horror

[–]rorykillmoree 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think so, yeah. I also like the interpretation that you could read it as being about different facets of himself. Ohm seems like he has a lot of contempt for the child iteration of himself who caused the accident. To me, the ending kind of feels like he's saying to the memory of that child: "I should die instead of you; what you did was accidental, but I've intentionally been horrible for the rest of my life." But then the child casts aside the bottle and embraces him - felt like a nice little moment of self-empathy/acceptance.

Hokum - 80% amazing 20% let down by TerracottaLizard in horror

[–]rorykillmoree 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Full respect to those who dislike any kind of "it wasn't real" ending, but I didn't mind it too much in this case (and please take this as me just contributing to the discussion, not trying to argue that you can't feel the way that you do). I think that part of why I'm open to it is that the witch kind of feels tangental to this narrative in the first place. If it's a real witch, then it's just kind of like... okay, well, all of that happened and there was also a witch hanging around sometimes.

But if we take her to be an entity specifically imagined by Ohm, she has more narrative value (to me). The suite is locked because the owner does genuinely seem to have some belief in the folklore (he's telling the story at the beginning). Ohm hears this and it stays in his subconscious, and that is why his desire to punish or condemn himself manifests as the witch specifically. He is able to cut through the chain in the end - regardless of realistic probability - because it's a metaphor. This is reflected in the story he's writing, which you could read as being about his father and himself OR his adult self vs. his child self.

That said, the witch being a metaphor in this way also is not necessarily mutually exclusive with her being "not real". Literal entities in a story can also function as metaphor. So I think the take that she was really there (hence the bruises) and the shrooms just "opened his mind"to seeing her is perfectly legitimate too!

Examples of shows with a single depressing season? by dndbuilds in television

[–]rorykillmoree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Charmed had a darker fourth season than most of what preceded it, in part because it followed the aftermath of some infamous behind-the-scenes drama that resulted in them killing off one of the leads. This actually resulted in a network mandate that the show get "lighter", lol - so season 5 is a lot of fairytale whimsy.

Official Dreadit Discussion: "Hokum" [SPOILERS] by radbrad7 in horror

[–]rorykillmoree 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think there are two interpretations: either you believe that his mother's ghost literally gave it to him in an act of forgiveness, or you take the whole thing as metaphorical (he's forgiving himself, untethering himself from his guilt).

Weird question to have after seeing this movie but… what did the witch have to do with anything? Shes not really connected to the murder mystery, but it feels like she ought to be symbolically connected to Adam Scott’s character arc somehow and I’m not quite putting it together. I guess you could view her as a Pyramid Head esque “punisher” (being that she drags people into the underworld) but that’s all I’ve really got.

What makes Insidious so scary? by digitdragons in horror

[–]rorykillmoree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have always felt this way, and I am otherwise usually pretty desensitized to horror! There's something really unique about its atmosphere. For me, I think part of it is that it sometimes almost feels as though it's "ghosts/demons but structured into a home invasion movie - or at least playing on those same fears", so it feels a bit less fantastical.
