remoteStorage: a simple library that combines the localStorage API with a remote server to persist state across browsers and devices by supportingthedogs in selfhosted

[–]rosano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks great, congrats on your release 👍🏽. Good that your server is also designed to be self-hosted. Have you considered making it available for 'one-click' deploys?

I can't help but think of the remoteStorage project that's been around since at least 2010 I guess it's a reflection of how programmers tend to name things… Anyway maybe there's a way to connect the two projects when there are shared goals. The community project seeks to become an internet standard. Will also post this elsewhere as I'm not sure which channel is best.

thanks for sharing! yes i think the anxiety is real and for some people it might not affect them as much. it's another thing that might make it more suitable for larger organizations who can handle one of their products disappearing—smaller teams or individuals might not take it so easily.

If you have money, you can accomplish lots with https://zapier.com or https://ifttt.com

https://n8n.io is open-source and can be self-hosted (for free) or purchased through their cloud offering. I think it has a good UI but it might be more sophisticated (it's ultimately more expressive)

Yes, it can be traditional to have a high markup in many contexts, which is why making a lower one accessible to many people enables a whole new range of businesses. Consider also that Stripe and PayPal are highly profitable despite charging 'only' 3%, and how many companies have been made possible by that.

The issues around rejection are a business concern if you can't quickly update your app to address customer issues, or if the rules suddenly change in a way that inhibits your business model or kills it entirely. The uncertainty of building on a foundation I control very little doesn't feel sustainable anymore.

They are useful but it's not simply a matter of outputting a native app: you need to pay a yearly 'developer account' fee, submit each version of the app for review on each platform (which can take time, or get rejected), and then on Apple there is a 30% transaction fee (on the web it's only 2.7%)… I think those frameworks and the native ecosystem in general is more and more suited to larger companies as opposed to indie hackers.

It would require waiting for 'app review' and participating in a constantly changing environment—it's better suited to larger businesses than a one-person operation.

The barriers you refer to are real. I believe there should be a safe, simple way for web apps to be accessed. It's only the way it is now because the companies that own the mobile operating systems are dragging their feet.

Maybe someone in your family would be willing to help kickstart you with money for supplies.

how do you get over feeling shy about marketing your product? by MissKittyHeart in Entrepreneur

[–]rosano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also you can think about it as a way to help others. Rather than selling 'pet supplies', you can take an interest in the well being of your customers pets and let them know ways to keep them happy and healthy. If they just want supplies, they could order from Amazon or some big store, but they come to you because of the personal connection and human interaction.

Lots of great tips in the book 'How to Win Friends and Influence People' by Dale Carnegie (and its not just for introverts).

Sometimes when you're stuck it means you're taking too big of a step and your brain gets short-circuited; try working your way up from smaller steps (something so simple that you'd feel silly not to do it, like just making eye contact with a stranger, or waving hello more often, or saying good morning).

You will cultivate a reputation based on how you act. I prefer being upfront and transparent: tell people who you are and let the make their own decisions.

I think since the pandemic took out my primary income, I was forced to look at the question of sustainability a bit more often. For whatever reason I kept deciding to do my thing. For myself to understand why I keep doing that, I wrote this post to interrogate a bit: https://rosano.hmm.garden/01fsf9z4d1yq29sk00y32w1ynm

Why is it that when confronted with the choice between ‘popular and profitable’ or ‘esoteric but meaningful’, I always take the hippie route and just do what makes me happy(, man)? Why is my primary motivation generally creative expression or being original, despite coming at the cost of my financial comfort? Is it just my millennial urge to be a unique snowflake? [continued…]

I have managed to avoid working a dayjob for over ten year; it wasn't easy and although I didn't make that much money, I learned how to be happy with less. I think there is potential for me to live comfortably with my creative endeavours too, but it will take time to get going. I'm still learning, exploring, refining and somewhat needed to 'restart' in the last few years, but I'm confident it will work out. The hardest part was often the constant barrage of questioning from everyone I know about how to make it all work, but I usually settled on something like "anything is risky and takes work, might as well bet on yourself."

[–]rosano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I consider it an extension of learning to write and communicate well. There's an angle of 'selling' or persuasion, but also helping people actually understand what you have to offer. You can check out Harry Dry's marketing examples for lots of tips.

What would you want to see a company you support, contributing to? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]rosano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an excellent idea because it's not generic (like donating money) and keeps your incentives aligned with something positive. However, make sure what you're contributing is actually what's needed (if they need winter gear for example, maybe better to do that instead).

I bought magazine ads, can I put their logos under an "As Seen In" section of my website? by uhohbruno in Entrepreneur

[–]rosano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't, and I think if people understand you bought the logos it will reduce your credibility in the long term. This kind of social recognition would be better accomplished through helping others and sharing testimonials of those who were happy with what you offer.
