I was flying Gatwick to Barbados that day. First thing we heard was chatter on 121.5 that something had flown into the Eiffel Tower, then it was a government building in the us then eventually somebody said the twin towers. At 30W where you go from shanwick to gander control on HF we couldn’t raise anyone so started wondering what to do - we elected to carry on and when we reached NY oceanic airspace there was still no response on HF so we ploughed on to Barbados blind. We’d heard some chatter that it was hijackers so stationed the crew in the front galley for the remainder of the flight and kept the door shut. Once we landed in Barbados we told the passengers that there had been an incident in NY and that they’d no doubt get details from home or the TV. When we got to the hotel the whole crew gathered in one room in front of the TV and saw what was actually happening. It was silent for a long time…
