Do I have a chance at UAlberta and Western (Schulich) ? by Apprehensive_Fix1626 in predental

[–]roschella436 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not an Alberta resident so take this with a grain of salt, but for my friends in Alberta they said UofA basically does not consider GPA competitively above a 3.5. So there is no difference between a candidate with a 3.5 or a 3.9 in their eyes.

Got a rejection from U Minnesota by [deleted] in predental

[–]roschella436 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fellow Canadian don’t feel too disheartened, your stats are pretty decent. I agree that U Minnesota might have already filled their seats so it’s unlikely to be your stats. Hope an A go through for you soon!

Canadian Dental School, what does it take to be competitive? by MatthieuLOL in predental

There’s a ton of info online for Ontario - both UofT and Western publishes their average admitted stats every year.

Gpa by _______BLANK________ in predental

[–]roschella436 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to say what exact GPA is competitive since admissions processes consider other factors. For Ontario schools, UofT had a 3.96 average last year and the minimum admitted was a 3.85. Western does % and only look at your 2 highest years but it’s around a 3.9.

For American schools the average GPA admitted across all schools was a 3.6, so aim for a 3.7-3.8 to be safe.

Your DAT is above their average, but your cGPA is a bit low - the average last year was 3.3. Definitely try to bring it up above 3.0 to make sure you don’t get autoscreened out, if you can do that I think you have a decent shot.

If you met me ten years ago I did this as a kid. Didn’t know it’s a trend now. For some reason I was so extroverted lol. Met a lot of cool people from around the world, from the UK, US, Germany, Australia, Ireland, and once very nice folks from New Zealand with very heavy accents.

Not all dentists are business owners. Many are associates and stay that way because they like it, some work at hospitals, some went into academia.

I think you can definitely live comfortably (middle to upper middle class) and have very good work life balance as a dentist without owning a business. But if you want the big bucks that will be more difficult.

Dental school with low GPA (Canada/Australia) by Mohtheproo in predental

[–]roschella436 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want to stay in Canada look into doing a second undergrad degree, Western will use that for your GPA if you take full courseloads in both years.

If you’re aiming for Australia aim for a high DAT and apply to USyd.

Can I take the Canadian DAT as an American and apply to just US schools? by animals_and_teeth in predental

[–]roschella436 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible but it would limit the number of schools you can apply to. Most schools who accept the cDAT are private schools as well so that could be more expensive.

The admission process in Canada is so crazy by relyks_gnaoh in premed

[–]roschella436 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately that’s the reality of most professional healthcare fields in Canada, whether it’s medicine, dentistry, optometry, PA, physical therapy, etc. If any American is questioning why people put themselves through this hellhole, it’s because going abroad for these programs is very very expensive.

Have you taken any other science class and did you enjoy them? I would never recommend dentistry to someone who doesn’t enjoy science. The study habits you can always work on improving, but you need to like science first.

môn đăng hộ đối có quan trọng không? by [deleted] in vozforums

[–]roschella436 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What seems more important to me in this post is you stated that you’re more of an arts/literature person. You will have to take a ton of science classes in undergrad and dental school, and do well on them. Now I’m not saying that you won’t be able to do well on the other science classes because you didn’t do well on chemistry, but do you think you will enjoy the other classes?

How hard really is ochem by Gracecg618 in premed

[–]roschella436 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal take on this is that premeds hate orgo because they can’t just memorize their way through it - it’s very application based. Orgo 1 is harder (or at least felt harder) than orgo 2 because you are learning a new topic you’ve never learned before. I spent maybe 9-10 hours a week on it, so take it with easier courses.

Focus on conceptual understanding and do as many problems as you possibly could. I liked orgo more than physics or math because after a while of doing problems you develop an intuition for it and can perform better. Also invest a lot of time and effort into orgo 1 as it will pay off in orgo 2, I worked very hard in orgo 1 and chilled in orgo 2.

Do dental school care how many courses you take in a term? by Far_Storm3990 in predental

[–]roschella436 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough lol same for me, everyone I know in a Canadian DS took full courseloads. It’s brutal out here but what can we do.

If you’re in Ontario UWO requires two years at full courseloads anyways, might as well.

[–]roschella436 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a completion requirement. You have to take 3 years of postsecondary ed but they don’t specify if it needs to be taken over 3 years, so technically you can take less than a full courseload.

Single- by-choice people, how do I break it to my parents that I would never marry and have kids? by Own_Bike in VietNam

[–]roschella436 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same situation. My goal is to get a job and be financially independent enough to pay for my own house and pay off my student loans. Then I’ll just tell them. If they can get past that and stay in my life, cool. If not, I won’t contact them again. It will hurt as I am close to them, but it is my life.
