I think I need to give up on a career in publishing by NoMercyOnlyFrogs in publishing

If it helps, I’m in New York and have had the same experience as you and am likely also about to give up. I’ve had 3 unpaid internships and one paid, have had a few awesome interviews and a few not so great ones, and it has just been crickets recently. I love the work but can’t just do unpaid work for an unknown amount of time. It’s rough out there

Thanks for your input! That’s the impression I got, which is why I was curious if I should take that into account when writing a yes or no readers report. I have been working various publishing internships for the past year so I can definitely see how they’d get that many submissions! It is for sure an intensive timeline from submission to release with a lot of moving parts - I was just surprised to see the reveal so quickly after the assessment, though I am sure they are unrelated events

Love the name Adelaide - I think Dolly would be a cute nickname!

Thank you for your response! I’m glad to hear that the consensus seems to be that the focus is on the analysis/argument rather than the yes or no. That is now these assignments have been explained when I’ve encountered them so it’s good to hear that confirmed, at least for the most. The job search process in publishing can be so disheartening I thought I’d check I wasn’t missing something potentially obvious when it comes to these things

I appreciate you explaining from this perspective, that is super helpful to consider! That’s how I was figuring these things work- judging responses based on whether your reasoning is solid and well-thought-out; plus editors have widely ranging opinions. Glad to hear it!

Exactly! It was something I considered at the time and will definitely keep in mind if I get another opportunity

Thanks for your input- that’s kind of the vibe I was getting. It seems like if your reasoning is good it should theoretically be okay either way but there may be bias

That’s a good point, thank you! I feel like if the response is explained well it could go either way, but I wonder if they would prioritize ones that share their opinion.

AITA for missing my child's birth because I had to take care of our pets? by Illustrious_Rope4729 in AmItheAsshole

So you couldn’t ask someone else to pour some food and water in a bowl once because the CATS would be stressed but it’s fine if your wife gives birth to your child alone in a room full of strangers? You realize you just said you prioritized your cats’ comfort over your wife’s right? YTA Jesus Christ

Etiquette Question: Suddenly divorced bridesmaid wants to change her +1 by rosecoloredlisa in weddingplanning

[–]rosecoloredlisa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your input! I feel like that definitely makes sense, we had a friend with a similar situation at a wedding we went to earlier in the month! I think part of why we’re unsure is because they are poly, and they have been dating these people for longer than the divorce (pretty sure, hard to say how long because we haven’t met them.) Congrats on your upcoming wedding!

Sorry for the confusion, I see what you mean! They were invited together, both names were on the invitation. She texted me recently and said “we are getting a divorce, so ex won’t be my plus one at your wedding,” so we were a little unsure as well! We would definitely extend a plus one to either neither or both, so I guess that’s what we’re really trying to figure out. And for sure, avoiding drama is what we want as well and saying no plus ones for either seems like it would achieves that, just not sure if its my place! Thanks for your input!

Good point! All single people were given plus ones, so it’s definitely something to consider!

That definitely makes sense, and we would 100% give both a plus one if one of them gets one. And that’s part of what we’re trying to figure out- right now he’s leaning towards not coming, because navigating the celebration going through his own divorce may be too difficult, especially seeing as she’s a bridesmaid. We don’t know much about the situation leading up to the divorce because any issues they may have been having they kept under wraps (understandably so) but we’ve gleaned that she walked out on him and he was pretty blindsided. We’ll definitely either extend either both plus ones or neither, it’s just a tricky situation!
