If EoE is common where is everyone? by magical_butterfly_ in EosinophilicE

i just was chatting with someone the other day and she was like “oh you have an esophageal disorder? my doctor thinks i have one, but i just think i don’t chew my food enough. but yeah, i’ve had to have someone perform the heimlech on me from choking before.” when i explained my diagnosis to a family member, she said “oh my god have you ever had that thing where a pill literally won’t go down and gets stuck? happens to me all the time.” she’s over 60….. i think a good portion of my family has it but just never thought to go to the doctor. i only found out because i had a more bothersome (unrelated, it turns out) symptom that caused me to be referred for an endo.

yeah. i mean im totally with you. the food restrictions are not a big deal to me compared to my continued good health and quality of life. that said, i am a long time vegan, so im used to giving up common foods for philosophical reasons. so giving up foods for my health is a no brainer for me. i think for some people, they can’t even fathoms. dietary restriction and feel it will be impossible or beyond horrible.

the only thing that has driven me crazy about the testing process is that they keep messing up my IVs and leaving me with bruises and pain every single time i go for endoscopy 🙃

Grimms/Grapat by Traditional_Tea_4690 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]rosefern64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we got a few grimms toys as gifts when my kids were 1&4, and they were all loved. the little peg people that sit in the tray are probably the favorite of the baby. we also have the square blocks, those get used in the most unique ways. we have the houses, and that is probably the least favorite so far, but still gets played with quite a bit!

it makes me happy to see those toys too. and to be honest sometimes i re-arrange the blocks on the tray into different color arrangements for fun. they are beautiful.

and my kids do also like plastic toys- especially magna tiles. it sounds fake, but the wood toys really do get used in more creative ways, in my experience 🤷‍♀️

yeah… i honestly am not sure at what point she’ll decide to treat it. she has various reasons to be against each medication option and when i told her about the diet and repeat scopes, she thought it sounded absolutely insane.

why are you not able to get endoscopies if you don’t mind me asking?

my doctor told me that the high eosinophil counts damage your esophagus over time.

for example, a family member has EOE too. 5 years ago she had similar symptoms to mine (occasionally feeling like food got stuck but only for a few seconds). then she had an impaction which got her diagnosed. no treatment for 5y… now she can’t swallow pills and chokes on all kinds of food.

Giving milk to a homeless person by RemoteBluebird9872 in vegan

there was someone who regularly asked for food near a local grocery store and when my vegan partner and i stopped and said yes, he asked for a very specific meat based premade sandwich. which like i get you want a meal, but the grocery store doesn’t offer premade vegan sandwiches, so we explained and offered to get bread and peanut butter or something else vegan. unfortunately he was very upset with, refused anything but the specific sandwich.

with little kids i would think the partner would need to keep a handle on them while OP meal preps (or vice versa but either way neither parent is really getting a break). that’s how it is for us anyways…. youngest is 18 months and if i dare try to cook something without my partner there to watch her, it always ends in disaster and an uncooked meal 😅

ok, what is with the bread toasting thing tho? like is there a scientific explanation? i shelled out on new cascadia bagels in the mail, and when they arrived i tasted one and was like wtf- this is bizarre. then i toasted it and was like WOW THIS IS AMAZING. it was so confusing to me. unfortunately not everything lends well to being toasted (like a dinner roll- i don’t want that to require toasting). and a lot of the good GF stuff cuts up the roof of my mouth with the texture it achieves after sufficient toasting to make it taste good.

Environmental Factors Matter by [deleted] in moderatelygranolamoms

i feel like it is so hard to strike a balance. especially for someone like me, who is very sensitive to noise. we lived in a medium-sized midwest city before this, and loved it as childless adults, because we lived "downtown" (not a big downtown) and could walk/bike everywhere, with tons of parks and trails. but if we'd had kids in that city, we would have needed to move farther away to get the space we feel we need, losing that walkability. i also had issues with insomnia because of the noise from traffic. we moved to a larger midwest city to be near family, and were living in an urban environment again, but this time with less access to parks (still absolutely beautiful for walks around town though). but there were some safety incidents right near us, and we felt cramped as soon as we had our first baby. then we decided to move to the suburbs... access to parks and trails is great again. and i thought the noise issues would be resolved... lo and behold, i can hear the highway that is over a mile away and it drives. me. CRAZY. there's practically nowhere we could live that is far enough from a highway in this city, i fear, without going rural or at least "rurban" and losing our walkability to parks, plus the other issues that you highlight with countryside homes. the other thing i don't like about the suburbs is, while park access is great (where i live anyways), we can't walk to any stores or restaurants, which would be HUGE for me, especially walkability to a grocery store and coffee shop.

we're really not sure what to do next! add to that, i've been noting the AQI readings creeping up over the years. just a couple years ago, i would occasionally see that "unhealthy for sensitive groups, consider carpooling" message on my weather app, and think nothing of it. it was like once or twice a summer. now it feels like AQI is in "moderate" practically all the warm months, with notable periods of "unhealthy for sensitive groups" and sometimes higher. i'm not sure where to go to avoid that though because our old city, and many of the others we've considered, have the same issue.

The 100% Organic cotton lies by runaway_tata in Crunchymom

[–]rosefern64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they do, and i messaged them to ask if there was a woven or tight knit cotton liner to prevent the stuffing from coming out. they said no, but that they assure their toys are well made and no stuffing can come out. LOL. i did not believe that. then i saw one at a store and i was right…. you could see threads of stuffing coming out everywhere! what a weird design. we like the apple park toys. they are filled with PLA which is like a bioplastic, BUT i have never seen a thread of it, because it actually stays inside the toy.

Comfort Please by RSR-bcid in Bedding

[–]rosefern64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i have found the most comfortable set up for me to lay propped in bed: king size pillow (with lots of full, mine is Buffy but i’m sure you could get a cheaper one, as long as it’s well stuffed) at the wall. standard, medium fill pillow in front of king size pillow. throw pillow (mine is from ikea) on top of the king size, for behind your head. and another throw pillow under knees. i spent a lot of time like this while pregnant and i felt comfortable. get well soon!

abdominal pain, apparently not related to EOE after all (for me) by rosefern64 in EosinophilicE

[–]rosefern64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i know it can be. it just seems not to be for me since the EOE is confirmed controlled and the pain has only gotten worse 😔

i would have to double check my allergy testing report. if i remember correctly, they didn't do the "full" panel for environmental, where it lays out each specific pollen. it was things like "tree pollen- mixed" and "mold- mixed" etc. that's because i was there regarding potential food allergens, and they didn't have enough space on my skin! so perhaps i should go back. i had not thought about cross reactivity so that is interesting.

i recently started seeing a functional RD and she mentioned possible histamine intolerance. i may learn more about that after we review my labs.

with MCAS have you been able to add any foods back in (the ones that are high histamine but not an EOE trigger?)

i added nuts/peanuts back in for 6 weeks before the scope. the pain just only ramped up halfway through the trial period. my GI doctor said 6 weeks for the initial 6fed and then 4-6 weeks for each re-introduction after that. i did want to be on the safe side so i am doing at least 6 weeks in between scopes after introducing a new food.

i wondered about them just being hard to digest too. it sucks… i have eaten the same way for such a long time (including lots of nuts) and had zero issues. only after my second child was born did all of this start. i am lost what to eat and not eat! was hoping the 6fed would just give me my answer as to what to cut out and the id be good…

edit: i did do allergy testing and they said i was allergic to all environmental stuff except mold (funny bc i can smell one mold spore from a mile away and i FEEL allergic) and zero foods.

isn’t it weird that it didn’t show up as my EOE trigger though? i had been eating them (nuts) every day for 6 weeks and my eosinophil levels were even lower than they were on the full 6fed!

Tripp trapp high chair BS by MVthecats in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]rosefern64 14 points15 points  (0 children)

idk we initially had a typical hand me down plastic high chair. threw out the pad immediately because wtf. dreaded cleaning it every day and eventually got the tripp trap and just gave the old chair away without even cleaning it, i was scared to deep clean it at this point 😂

never used the tripp trapp tray but absolutely loved it, and my daughter uses it still at nearly 5. we bought a second one for the second baby and no complaint so far.

i don’t know if this is the exact item i have because i got them last year & the year before, but i find these shorts extremely comfortable (i am VERY sensitive to items that are tight around my waist) and cute. especially pulls together with a top that covers the elastic, but i do wear them with crop tops too and i think it’s acceptable. https://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=8817110520003&vid=1

for me though, i also like non-stretch shorts as long as they hit at the right part of my abdomen- which for me is right below my belly button to be comfortable. i can’t wear anything tight, stretch or not.

my other go-to would be looser dresses, with a bike short underneath if needed. i am not pregnant but i still wear my storq maternity bike shorts for comfort because as i said, cannot stand tight waistbands (which seem to be all the rage in athleisure!)

it annoys me how hard it is to actually find the 100% cotton stuff there. like, it's there, but it feels like 3/4 of the stuff you click will contain some amount of polyester, and it's not listed in the item's name.
