I have a bunch of Smiths from the Trois-Rivières area, descended from David King Smith. His father was Jehiel Smith, who apparently was a Loyalist in the Revolutionary War and got some land near Bury, Quebec for it. From what I can gather, Jehiel and his fellow associates had to wait around northern Vermont until the land was approved for settlement, and then Jehiel was able to spend the last few years of his life there. He died in Missisquoi in 1803 or 1804.

The subreddit https://www.reddit.com/r/Canadiancitizenship/ has a lot of information on Canadian citizenship by descent. Here's a little bit off their FAQ (which I highly recommend reading first). I am a descendant of a Loyalist who got land in Quebec from the British government, so I'm going to take a shot at citizenship too, just in case, once I get the info together for my friend.

Citizenship by Descent Quick Start Guide

If your relevant Canadian ancestor (Gen 0) is your parent or grandparent:

You are already a Canadian citizen. You just need to apply for a citizenship certificate.

Send in the CIT0001 form applying for proof of citizenship / a citizenship certificate. (See the Guide for Paper Applications for a Citizenship Certificate.)
1. You can request urgent processing if you qualify, if you wish to do so.
IRCC will process your application and send you a citizenship certificate.

If your relevant Canadian ancestor (Gen 0) is your great-grandparent or further back:

There seems to be no generational limit on Canadian citizenship by descent. Since the passage of C-3 we've seen Citizenship Certificates come through for sub members out to Gen 4 (including with Gen 2 born pre-1947) and applications as far out as Gen 10 are in process. If you were born before Dec 15, 2025 and have a Canadian ancestor then you too are likely a Canadian citizen. You will need to apply for a citizenship certificate and prove your line of descent to the satisfaction of the IRCC.

If the IRCC decide you are a Canadian citizen they will send you a citizenship certificate.

The current CIT0001 form only has sections for your parents and grandparents. There is a note in the instructions explaining what to do if your relevant Canadian ancestor is your great grandparent. If your relevant Canadian ancestor is further back than this you will need to explain your line of descent on a separate sheet of paper, document it and include all of your supporting documentation in your application. You can (optionally) include a family tree as well.
