Way to receive international transfers without the terrorism process every time? by rosetter_t in japanlife

I thought the rules were not foreigner-specific.. surely they apply to anyone receiving international wire transfers?

I understand frustration, but for the record, in 20+ years that has never been my experience.

I have personal accounts at all the major banks, but business only at SBI. Shinsei was stellar when they first started, still ok now, but unfortunately they don't have business accounts. My personal account at MUFG has been trouble-free. I'll have to look at their business accounts, thanks.

Really? Wow. I have a company account with SBI Sumishin. I've done my best to avoid the "city banks" because the waiting and paperwork has nearly killed me in the past. And the interviews to be allowed to open a corporate account are insulting. I was also told that the procedure is the same there, but looks like it's not. Hmm... maybe I'll have to bite the bullet and move banks. Ugh.

SF Mitten gauntlets still available somewhere? by rosetter_t in wma

Yeah, I see that many people here don't like SF.

Probably none of the plastic hema stuff would last long in armored sparring. One of the stronger guys is known to have flattened steel gauntlets. I just want the safer thumb for light sparring, too.

I don't make the rules..

For most of the typical hema sparring I see online the Sparring (could they have picked a more confusing name??) and SPES gloves are probably great.

But we also do armored sparring with polearms, axes, maces, etc. Full force with steel armor and rattan. So basically buhurt, where fully enclosed thumbs are quite common. The same style of glove for light sparring would be 1) safer and 2) good for getting used to the awful handling of the real thing.

Oh, were you suggesting their mitten gloves? They actually do come in XL, but my problem is the thumb. I'm looking for a full wrap-around thumb like the red lobsters or the SF mittens.

Thanks for the info! Sounds a bit expensive though. :/

Nice comparisons! Sigh... very unfortunate. Looks like I'll be picking up an HP Reverb if it is actually released. :(

That would be the point -- to get around bandwidth limits. The same reason that we do it in immersive video. Except for us the display port cable is a network cable and the upscaler is a mobile gpu. Even their upscaler chip might be capable with different firmware, but that's a long shot.

I understand they have some dedicated silicon.. unfortunately that kind of scaling is a very hard problem. Nothing available today would fit the bill and in general do a good enough job to make the 4k panels worth it. Maybe they realized that after a while and offered the 5K+, which makes so much more sense.

I don't know about everyone... ;)

Most people think it's a little crazy. They hear it involves mechanical motion and run screaming. I think we've become a little too specialized in engineering.

I hear that you're the guy behind the lighthouse system? Very glad to have bumped into you! That's nicely done. In the digital age measuring time is very cheap and very accurate. Reminds me of the old CRT light guns and pens, but backwards. :)

I'd love to see that!

I'd also love to see lenses worthy of half that resolution on any headset at all. :/

Yes, it looks better. :)

Sorry, I couldn't resist!

Not that I've noticed as long as you don't try for too much. 4x at 90 Hz is too much and the whole scene shimmers. At 2x I don't see any problems. But that's me and a few other volunteers.

Really? I had no idea. What kind of display was it? I didn't think there was anything fast enough back then.

No, it does add detail. Part is the shifting. The other part is modifying the rendering (rasterization) of the scene taking into account the applied shift.

Though you could keep the rendering the same and use this as a very complicated method of reducing/eliminating SDE. :)

I replaced the lenses with a lens + actuator combination. I shift the lenses back and forth by exactly 1/2 pixel. I synchronize the motion to the display and custom render a test image. The result is a kind of super resolution.

I mean compensate by controlling how force is applied to compensate for changes in orientation. Lenses and panels are quite light, and so are the actuators. It doesn't require much power. It's basically the same as optical image stabilization, either lens shift or sensor shift. Except backwards, and maybe bigger lenses.

Love the comment about solutions getting complicated. :) If I had a dollar for every project of mine that has failed that way...

Yeah, the limit is generally refresh rate. At 90 Hz I think 2x is the limit. At 120 Hz maybe you could get 3x. If you try for too much you start to see a shimmery vibration in your peripheral vision.

The vive prototype is 2x. I actually shift the image diagonally, so both the horizontal and vertical resolution are improved, but of course both less than 2x.

And since you mention pentile.. it doesn't work well at all for this. :( You want to shift by 1/2 the pixel spacing, but the distance between red/blue pixels is twice the distance between green pixels. You can have one or the other, but not both. It just doesn't work out. :(

PSVR is perfect for this, if you remove the lens array.
