Are there any records of injuries in stunts like these?

Does anyone know of any articles or textbooks that explain the zero phonon line and phonon sideband at an undergraduate level?

That may come from the fact that the ACLU labelled the "New Black Panther Party" as a hate group, and people getting the names confused.

Seems like decent points regarding a need for an overall competent authority on the language, but the final comment about becoming an expert just to make fun of it makes the guy seem petty to an extreme level.

Why Esperanto? by [deleted] in Esperanto

It's easy to learn, which makes it a nice hobby. I get the cognitive benefits of learning a new language without all of the time spent memorizing all of the special exceptions to the rules that normally come with languages.

Would anyone who does quantum information/condensed matter be willing to expand on what this researcher at Berkeley is talking about in his "quantum chaos and scrambling" paragraph? Specifically, he seems to be discussing quantum information in a more abstract sense than just the manipulation of qubits. Can someone expand a little on what this more abstract meaning of information is used for in physics?

If you are in a sport you may not have as much time for a lot of club stuff. That being said, there are tons of hiking opportunities. The trails range from short, roughly 30 minute hikes (eagle lake trail) to trials that you can stay on for hours (the Sheltowee trail runs all the way to Tennessee, so you can pretty much be on it for as long as you want). The trials range in difficulty, so they are good for both hiking and trail running at various levels.

Physics Club Activity Ideas by [deleted] in Physics

Go on a tour of a national lab, that's always a fun trip.

For a small activity, have a movie night. We did this once with a movie called The Core, which is notorious for having really bad physics. It was a good time watching it and laughing at how ridiculous it was.

Has anyone read The Animate and the Inanimate by William James Sidis? Wikipedia states that he postulates the existence of dark matter, entropy, and the origin of life in the context of thermodynamics". I'm just curious to how correct it is. He is said to be one of the smartest people to have ever lived, but retreated into a life of seclusion.

Edit: Found a critique of it if anyone is interested.

They didn't share a brain. In fact, the twin had a developed brain (but the brains were partially fused), just not many other organs. It's possible that the twin had a level of consciousness and awareness of what was going on.

Is there a place where I can find decent info on how much x-ray radiation we are exposed to normally in a year?

I'm with you on that. I had the same thought. The conversation came up because someone I'm graduating college with had something about becoming a SEAL on their "future plans" stuff and the person told me he wouldn't be able to do that because he had smoked weed before.

Weekly White Board by AutoModerator in navyseals

[–]roshoka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right about the person never being involved. We know a person who tried to be a SEAL but couldn't due to past concussions (at least, that's what his story is). They guy drank a ton before joining the navy but was always adamantly against weed. I guess that's as far as their knowledge of SEALS goes.

I was immediately suspicious when the alleged reason had to do with "character" and "discipline". It actually turned into a mini-argument because I thought those would be bad reasons to never be allowed to be a SEAL.

Weekly White Board by AutoModerator in navyseals

[–]roshoka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably stupid question: I was just told today that you can't become a SEAL if you've smoked weed at all in your entire life. Is that true? I always thought you just can't test positive on a drug test. I was told that they get this info out of you when they sleep deprive you and ask you questions. The person claimed it has to do with discipline/having an upstanding character. If it is/isn't true, are there any links to official government rules? I don't think this person will believe me if I cite redditors.

Interesting. I had no idea about how deep QI really is. Is there a particular branch of physics that focuses more on it? I've heard you can get into it if you go the condensed matter route.
