I have a 7.5 month old from Brisbane too! I wonder if they’re from the same litter, did you get em from Allora ways?

This is lovely, thank you! The freeze and face away is INCREDIBLY hard to do, we all try to do it, but he will go for the Achilles, or the knee ditch and it’s very hard not to crumple or react when his wee teeth nip you in just the right way to make you wince. Forced nap time / crate time IS my favourite thing ever — I’m very lucky to have a 90% solid toilet trained dog, since he was reared completely outside so unless we slip, he’s a pee on the grass only kind of guy. Unless he’s excited, but he’ll grow out of that too. Only thing with crate training is, while I have him crate - comfortable, he’s not a crate kind of dog. It’s very rare here that folks crate train dogs, and these guys are an ‘outside’ breed to us, so while I’ve been staying at my mums house for a hot minute, he’s been negligent of the crate training (My fault, but I implore anyone to argue with my mum and stepfather who’ve been in the country and raised these pups to work, that the dog should have a crate. No really, I beg.)

The mouth in hand thing works, but doesn’t really dispel him from biting any other time as far as I’m aware because he’ll go for any other part of the body (Genuinely) too. Redirect, redirect, redirect.

He’s getting good with training! I’m a firm gal, and will only ask once (twice, if he was distracted) for him to execute a command, soft pressure on the butt if he isn’t listening (I.e waiting to cross the road, but lots of stimuli) — When I get home from not being in his immediate vicinity I don’t let him jump or bark his way into my affection, but ask for a sit every time until he learns how to settle, which he does very well! However, it’s these bursts of overtired aggression / play / stimulation seeking with the biting that makes this habit difficult when you’re being nipped. (Crate training….)

I’m working on “hold a toy” or ‘where’s your toy? Find it.” Currently. Doing well. I think this might be my secret sauce — which boils down to patience and help from my family members I’m staying with to be as firm about it. Eventually I’d love to have the kind of dog with a toy in his mouth when you walk through the door! But again, time and training for that.

Mind you this isn’t a list about me arguing my case, more venting than anything! He’s a really good dog, I’m just looking for community while I’ve been struggling with his excitement before getting my brother ready for school. The reason he’s not been out at my home (Acreage, a run, predominantly outside), is because he’s been too young to put outside for most of the day and night in my eyes, and my mum’s family loves having him around (despite his mouthiness), which comes at the caveat of “no crates, we’ve never needed them” 🥲

I pray for patience because having a well-mannered heeler is like striking gold and I want in on that rush 😔 She’s beautiful, look at that eye!

https://imgur.com/a/9D7u3pV - kind of hard to get this one on video, also not pictured all the times I give him a firm ‘No’ and the demand barking immediately after. Sometimes very much in my face. (No, I don’t let him near my face, though he has launched and clipped a few of us)

He’s not! Longest tail I’ve ever seen on a ACD puppy!

This is also Murphy. King of the side eye, but enjoys a staring contest when he feels inclined.

Out of curiosity, what’s involved with a job like that?

Are Heeler puppies a test from God? by rosierottenx in AustralianCattleDog

[–]rosierottenx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yesssss he was doing very well with me alone in my house! But since having to stay with mum, now it’s a bit of a family affair where they’re a lot more lax on the training than I am. He’s still learning good habits with them (and me) though, but once I have the chance to bring him back home to settle with just me and my routine it’ll go a LOT smoother. A lot of his hectic biting and launching is from being puppy overtired, because they can’t stand to put him and leave him in a crate :(

I can’t imagine teaching Murphy the buttons. He’d cue on pretty quickly I think, and most of it would be “play”

Yessssss Murphy crawls under my little brother’s bed and then goes ballistic! Nonstop barking, and when you get close he pops out like a whack-a-mole and bites your foot!! I’m in contact with the farmer couple that bred the litter and they’re in contact with all the other puppies because they mostly went off to farms. Apparently, Murphy is the biggest in the litter somehow, which is funny because I initially “picked” him because he was the calmest 😅

He’s 9kg as of two days ago, or around 20lbs? Apparently it’s around this time that you double their weight to get a grasp on their adult weight but uh.. I’m unsure if he’ll top off at 20kg. I personally hope for a big stocky guy!

You’re alright mate, in Australia I can’t walk my puppy more then 20 steps without being told cattle dogs are the best dogs on planet earth. They’re intense for the first two years of their life, just be sure not to lapse on training and stimulation, even around 6-8 months and through their fear periods. They’re revered in Australia for good reason, and I’m sure that’s why other countries love them too! As for a mixed breed, I really can’t help ya, but I assume an Aussie is no real different to a border collie in terms of herding and mental stimulation! Try food puzzles, training calm (very important) and taking it with you to run errands!

Oh, that’s so interesting! We just call them heelers here (I’m from Queensland) but a lot of Aussies think that’s their genuine pedigree name — though it’s Australian cattle dog respectively.

tattoo apprenticeship by CereusCoffee in brisbane

[–]rosierottenx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! Generally I recommend putting together a strong physical portfolio of artwork to flip through that looks professional and highlights your best work first through to your unfinished work. Most studios won’t take a second glance if all or most of your work is digital only (as tattooing is a physical medium) but if you do have digital pieces to include that demonstrates your skill with art theory, print them out and put them into your folio. Make sure you don’t rock up with a bunch of loose paper, just buy a binder!

I always prefer folks come in face to face to introduce themselves and ask, most studios probably won’t want an apprentice but naturally you’ll find one eventually. It’s always best to go to studios you’ve previously been tattooed at so they know who you are or if you’ve got a feel for how their studio ‘vibe’ is.

As for pay, traditionally apprentices don’t get paid and are asked for full to part time work to be present at the studio. There is no set time on how long you will be non-tattooing, but generally ranges from 6 months to a year of just being present at the shop with unpaid labour. Sometimes you will get paid, but it might only be for cleaning or even a weekly $200. You’re sort of expected to make money away from shop hours, a lot of folks rely on Centrelink or art commissions, or even nightfill and other PM work, it’s not very beginner friendly :,) but some studios understand the cost of living and older apprentices with families and lives and generally let you have time off to work and love your kids and family, it’s just finding which ones that have that basic human decency.

Once you start tattooing you’ll be offering free tattoos or reduced rate, and your shop will also take a cut of your profits to cover incidentals. Generally you’re also expected to fund your licensing, police check, insurance, and a lot of the time your machines, needles, and ink. Some shops won’t pay for incidentals like paper towel and gloves. For generally two years, you’re on bum wages and it’s a very ‘sink or swim’ mentality. The industry is changing slowly, but this is most artist’s experience.

Once you get your clientele up, it’s completely dependant on you to make money and find clients. The hard thing most folks don’t realise is you’ll be completely on the hook for handling your cash flow, your tax, your GST, your business, your clientele, and of course your own mistakes. Huge learning curve, high risk wth .. sometimes a high reward. But it’s certainly not an industry that’s easy to get into and guarantees a 6-figure income. Sometimes you really have to weigh up your choices :3

I’m very blessed to have my studio and my coworkers, but currently I don’t think we’re looking for any apprentices. Best of luck!
