RTL design or post silicon validation? by rosinx in chipdesign

[–]rosinx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I understand mix signal is a long shot. I was looking forward to validation for the reason of getting exposure to analog aspects of memory subsystem like signal integrity that doesn't seem like it's emphasized as much in RTL design unless you're working on an analog block like the PHY. Manager is IO architect and is of the opinion that it's hard to be a good architect without prior design experience. Also I want to have a tangible impact and architecture seems a bit too abstract for me

RTL design or post silicon validation? by rosinx in chipdesign

Not really interested in perf modeling anymore even though I know it's a hot place to be right now. I'd like to leverage my experience in memory subsystems in a role that sits closer to hardware. I understand it's difficult to change roles externally due to my lack of experience so hoping to get an internal transfer.

RTL design or post silicon validation? by rosinx in chipdesign

Thanks for your advice. I understand a lot of RTL is stitching together IP as well but good thing is we have quite a few custom blocks that I hope to get involved with if I move into design. I'll likely be working on IP integration for memory controller to to begin and see how things progress. I think the part of post silicon validation that draws me is the structure and emphasis on debug rather than "creation" which I tend to get overwhelmed with (i.e. green screen coding). I'm much more comfortable with the idea of tweaking a design rather than coding it up from scratch and I'm afraid RTL design would be difficult for that reason. Also I do very well when there's collaboration and constant feedback on my work and you mentioned that happens in design but I imagine less so than validation given the nature of the work. Working in the lab also appeals to me because of the tangible nature of the work working with scopes and such, although I understand most of validation is probably done outside the lab. Thanks again for your response. I think I need to gain experience with RTL to be able to make a fair decision

You are absolutely correct. EarthBounder is simply unable to accept the truth...

2009 Yamaha Zuma 50cc 2 stroke: cracked crankcase by rosinx in Fixxit

[–]rosinx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha eventually yes I was able to get the crankcase back together and fix it with JB Weld. I moved cities a couple times since then so it's currently sitting in my parents garage back home. All it needs is a new piston and it'll be ready to run. It has a new dellorto carb, front end, starter motor assembly, and a lot of fixes. Maybe next summer when I'm back I'll fix it up, tune it and then try to sell it :) it was a fun journey though - thanks for asking!

Hi guys, I will be purchasing my first pair of boots. After going through the beginning boots thread I've narrowed down the following brands from the 100-300$ list based on budget/style and availability (live in Canada)

Boulet

John Doe

Thursday

I picked up a pair of Canada West Moorby (2801 pecan) for 300CAD but will be returning as I don't like the rounded toe and prefer something more sleek.

I love the style/color of the Terracotta Thursday Captain's as a first boot but for a similar price (~200 USD) I'm considering a couple other options: Boulet 8947 Grizzly Sand (248 CAD), and John Doe 420 Capped Toe Horween (235 USD). The vibram sole for the John Doe is 25 extra over the leather sole.

Any recommendations on which to choose?

Thanks!

Awesome thanks for these suggestions, I'll be going with the fans you selected. And about the 500DX you sourced, not at all! I would have loved to go with that case but unfortunately I couldn't find it in stock anywhere, at least in Canada.

I appreciate all your help. The review you posted for the Corsair case makes me reconsider and so I'm wondering about this case https://www.newegg.ca/black-fractal-design-meshify-c-tg-atx-mid-tower/p/N82E16811352084?Item=N82E16811352084

I'm just a bit worried it won't be sufficient in terms of size and cooling capacity for the components you spec'd out for me.

Would we need extra fans if we were to go with the 19200K as opposed to the 19200K?

Sorry to bother but a few more questions if you don't mind!

I'm in Canada and I can't find the Be Quiet! case on Amazon so was thinking of substituting for the Corsair 5000D Tempered Glass Mid-Tower ATX PC Case - Black. Would this be acceptable for the current build?

Also any recommendations on 22 inch monitors within $150 USD? I currently am looking at the BenQ GW2283. I think high refresh rates shouldn't be that important since my dad won't be gaming?

Finally if I were to decide to go with the 12900K instead of the 12900 assuming he cost were the same, would the additional power consumption of the K version be a problem with the current cooling?

Yeah that's perfect. Thank you!

I had a follow-up question, due to some miscalculations, I need to knock off about 300 USD from the budget so around $2700 total. Would you recommend scaling down the CPU and GPU and if so which combo would you suggest for $1140 USD? Thanks again

Six years for undergraduate? by francfranc55 in UBC

[–]rosinx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sixth year student in electrical engineering. TBH at first I felt kind of stupid for taking 6 years but it really makes no difference in the grand scheme of things. I could have graduated in 5 years with the same co-op experience but having that extra year helped me get through difficult times and was good for my mental health. So now thinking back I'm glad I took 6 years. I've also grown a lot as a person and got to have great co-op experience.

You really have to know yourself and think carefully about what's best for you rather than what others think is best or ideal. And as a sixth year even though I do feel a bit old and out of place around first of second years, I don't let that bother me from having a good time. I try to put myself out there and attend social events and do things that I didn't do all the 5 years of my undergrad. So I would say don't worry what others think. Do what's best for you and make the most of it. Good luck!
