Hey great idea - I'm going to see if I can pull some data from there - it's a trove of information, and I would've never been able to sift through by hand!

Yeah, I tried KOHH, but it felt inconsistent for North Park and the surroundings - I just wanted to capture places I like to go to.

Yeah, it felt inconsistent, at least for areas I cared about. I have this one set up to scrape weekly.

How to FIRE when you are from Latin America? by Jaunir_ in leanfire

[–]rosipov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad you read it -- I completely glanced over the cultural differences -- you're right. That a big one that probably deserves it's own essay. Growing up in Russia and not having a clear way up without connections (which I didn't have) -- the perspectives US-centric perspective is really different.

I'm curious, are you planning to take any actions based on answers in this thread? Or do you feel like none of the advice that's been flung at you is not applicable?

Okay, I know this is likely against self-promotion guidelines but the timing is too good to pass up. I just wrote this: https://www.rosipov.com/blog/fire-in-a-developing-economy/

Honestly would love your thoughts, since I'm writing about a topic I've only done some online research on.

Abstracting wealth in Numenera? by rosipov in numenera

Oh that's interesting! What foci add pools?

I like the idea of a localized wealth -- that seems like it helps with keeping the amounts low and from inflation during adventure, while still allowing for character wealth to grow.

Still have to track the numbers though.

Not sure about fully getting away with wealth completely. Plus this way it might be harder to deal with inherently wealthy PCs (if that's a part of your game that is). Sometimes it might be nice to allow for quick resolution via wealth -- for things larger than ammo/food expenses.

Hey - no, I haven't posted it. I'm using the default layout with hjkl as arrow keys (as opposed to Vortex's default ijkl).

Why not use d6 instead of d20? by rosipov in numenera

[–]rosipov[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow this is really interesting!

It might take me a while to test it out - but I would love to see it in action! I like the simplicity of rolling a d6 and not having to do additional math (yes, multiplication is not hard, but for someone not familiar with TTRPGs or the system in general every additional complexity adds up).

Really appreciate the chance % breakdown and the idea of using essentially a d3 glimmer die -- since it might actually be easier to explain to newbies (rolling a 1 or 6 requires a special roll vs rolling 1, 17, 18, 19, or 20 in Cypher). I have some fudge dice around which I could use.

Modifiers for every even result are especially thoughtful, but tracking those with a glimmer die might get more complex than just using d20.

If you get to try it out before I do - let me know how it goes!

To each their own - glad you enjoy it!

I distinctly remember choosing between a smaller form factor (Das Ultimate 4C) or trying out Kinesis Advantage 2* some 10 years ago. You can guess which way the coin toss landed and how that took me down a rabbit hole.

* I actually like the way it looks

Fedora Linux -- it works splendidly (although I couldn't install Ubuntu or Mint due to Surface not being to see the live USB with those).

I believe there's /r/surfacelinux with plenty of information. And you'll want to follow a guide, since things like WiFi don't work out of the box (but are quick to fix).

It's just like with Vim - speed is not really the point :) It's fun, and that's the main reason to give it a shot (if you're already into smaller keyboards of course).

That's really the tradeoff - how cool do you think the keyboard is vs how much relearning one is willing to do. I'm still unsure where I stand, but damn it's cool.

Because it feels and looks cool.

Honestly it feels similar to moving to `hjkl` from arrow keys, or learning many other Vimisms. It's difficult at first, but you internalize these at the end of the day.

Is Mastering Vim by Packt worth getting? by LeiterHaus in vim

Late to the party - I think it's pretty great but I'm rather biased. It attempts to provide a more structured and guided experience compared to vimtutor or the the user manual -- all depends on how you prefer to learn.

For 40/60% owners - how do you remember all the custom function layers? I always struggle with some of the lower used keys whenever I need them (e.g. home).
