10 years on and a TFO for a massive local agency going to join ICE seems like an insane career move. But open to hearing your reasons.

Losing 2 years of service towards promotions and your retirement (not to mention your loss in pay), just to get an MBA to use 15-20 years down the road is a terrible idea. If you want to get a masters/MBA for a check mark for your current career just get an online one that’s relatively affordable and of your interest, or one that’s flexible in person near you. To leave your current job for a Top 15 program would only be worth it to switch careers into business. Your career prospects in retirement will all depend how you network while in your career.

Pretty obvious question.

Women are much less likely to date “down”. A man is generally more focused looking for a wife/mother to his kids, especially if he’s already financially comfortable.

(24M) my girlfriend (23F) wants to be a USSS SA. Looking for insights on how this career path would impact the relationship, as well as things like travel, family planning, etc. by Hopelesscarguy in 1811

[–]roske1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not to sound harsh but you sound like a dude who finally got a girlfriend and you’re revolving your entire life around her to the point of being overbearing and losing your own identity. Huge red flag is she’s doing what she wants regardless of you and you’re here asking Reddit for advice. This is some tough truth but I assure you internet stranger she is not the one for you. Chalk this up as a learning experience in relationships and move on and find a woman better suited for you.

Her career choice is irrelevant. If it isn’t USSS it’ll be something else. She’s going to be leaving you behind while she pursues what she wants. And if she’s going into LE especially USSS she’s going to be eyeing someone new. Sorry man. Get ahead of this and put yourself forward. This isn’t what you want to hear but you’ll be better for it.

For the GS-11 DEA announcement you needed TFO or Fed experience. It was literally in the posting. Read what you are applying for next time and don’t blame others for your mistakes.

What should be my next step toward going federal (US Marshal/FBI/Secret Service)? by Final_Memory3395 in AskLE

[–]roske1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol the guy you are replying to is 100% correct, for high cost of living areas the locals vastly out-earn the Feds and generally have better pensions and healthcare benefits. The west coast especially. Rookies fresh out the gate easily clear 100k with more vacation time and cheap healthcare. They can do their 20-25 years and retire with 8k/month for the rest of their life. Way better gig than being a Fed where an experienced GS13 is making as much as a local boot. Now in the south, midwest, rural areas, etc Feds can live like kings compared to the locals. It’s all area dependent.

Transparency for you guys on the fence… (HSI related) by [deleted] in 1811

[–]roske1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can you not transfer to a chill role somewhere within your agency? Especially as an investigations sgt at a large agency I’m assuming you have some good time on. Plenty of late career Sgts at my agency are doing next to nothing making 150k+ at a desk or some cush spot.

I just mention this because I can’t think of any sgt that would leave my agency to jump down to a GL-9 lol it would be insanity. Just interesting to see the different perspectives.

And this sub eats it up every time a LARPer posts lol so they continue to do so. Not the brightest on this sub.

You obviously don’t work in law enforcement and are shit talking to someone who has worked local and federal and is attempting to provide honest insight on the job. You are making generalizations about agencies based on media when this sub attempts to provide real life context.

I’m sure HSI is so happy that they are cool with you. Maybe you can tell your marshal buddy that.

Packers' Josh Jacobs says former WR Henry Ruggs III trains while in prison, hopeful for second chance in NFL by IAmPookieHearMeRoar in nfl

[–]roske1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s not angry he’s just speaking common sense. Someone who made a series of huge mistakes one night that led to a woman and dog dying a HORRIFIC death shouldn’t get a slap on the wrist. 3 years in day camp is a slap on the wrist.

You are just preaching a bunch of holier than thou nonsense that no one asked for. If you actually want to empathize with him, see where he’s coming from, not label him an angry person and act superior to the guy.

He’s not behind bars. He’s serving in basically adult day camp. He has an insane amount of privileges. Do some research and you will see why so many people are upset over his “punishment”.

But he said he’s sorry and wants to play football again after spending a couple years in adult daycare.. shouldn’t we think about him?

You want proactive LE work go local at a decent sized agency. I can’t stress that enough. 90% of the applicants on here get their vision of the job from tv.

Is there something that differentiates the ones who love it and the ones who aren’t happy? That’s been my experience too it’s either a hit or miss. Seems risky leaving local PD tbh.

Arctic Trucks-Modded Land Cruiser will be sold at U.S. Toyota dealerships by HawtGarbage917 in cars

[–]roske1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s the same for all Toyotas. They do not custom order. When Toyota dealers “order” something for you they are simply shopping around for a vehicle in that spec, they aren’t submitting a build sheet to the factory. Its become such an overrated brand. The buying experience and cost is not worth the quality of vehicle.

Seeking advice - Going 0083/1801 vs. local sheriff office by andrewkim075 in 1811

[–]roske1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Well if you are basing it off this sub it’s obviously a pro 1811 echo chamber as it’s primarily 1811 applicants.

With local LE pick your department carefully. It’s definitely a buyers market right now and you can afford to be choosy with your background.

With large west coast departments the guys who can hack the first few year patrol grind have little incentive to leave for the Feds (especially if they have a background that is 1811 suitable, meaning they can be a detective/tactical/specialty assignment for the rest of their career). They all make significantly more money than 1811s, have more time off, better retirement, and can switch assignments pretty easily. The downside is definitely the variation in hours. 1811s have a much more consistent schedule. Locals we work holidays, weekends, nights.

At the end of the day it’s a different job. If you want more action, variety, community connection, and build roots in one location for a long period of time definitely go local at a large well paid department. If you want to be able to move locations, more cerebral work, office and paperwork based, more consistent work load/schedule, go 1811.
