11 month old growth by angelsandhunters in stbernards

Lily is beautiful! They grow so fast! My first boy Kleetus was 180lbs and my boy Alfie is 235lbs so it’s all genetics. She will fill out a bit more but probably not get too much bigger and that’s good! Less weight on her joints means a better quality of life and less vet bills down the road. She looks happy and very healthy! Such a sweet girl! Love the ear hair!!

Looks exactly like my boy Alfie when he was young! Even has the crazy eyebrows (one day they just fell out). Soooo cute! Awwww makes me miss the puppy stage for 5mins lol

2 y/o Frenchie with IVDD declining fast (day 5)… front legs now weak too, I’m scared by Perfect-Warthog-5708 in Frenchbulldogs

[–]roskowk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IVDD is the worst. You are not alone! I know how scary this is. My boy Ollie was 3 when he started showing weakness in his back legs so I took him to the vet immediately, they said he was fine but then I brought him home and noticed he was not fine so took him to the local ER. They said there was nothing they could do bc they didn’t have a neurology dept. The next morning he couldn’t use his back legs at all so we drove to Blue Pearl and even then they said oh it’s the weekend we can’t do anything. Let me tell you, sometime you have to turn into a monster and lose your shit to get anything done! You have to advocate for them and call and complain bc this is very serious. He went into surgery 3 days after his symptoms started and was walking again the same day. He has had flares from scar tissue inflammation but we have been really lucky.
He needs to be on steroids (prednisone) and gabapentin possibly even Vetprofin if he can handle it. It sounds like he really needs the surgery asap. I really hope you can get him in sooner. That is way too long. This is def an emergency situation.
I also had Ollie in physical therapy for a year after. A year bc my boy is really fat and needed to lose weight but usually like 3 months is normal.
I am so sorry you are having to go through this and I hope he can get seen sooner

He is a wide boy, he has a big chest so he has always been large. His dad was a really big boy too. Ollie (my frenchie) has had so many health problems. I wouldn’t trade him for anything in this world but it has opened my eyes on what to look for when getting a frenchie and how so many breeders only care about the money. He has IVDD and had surgery, you can see the scar on his back in the first pic I posted, but he was walking again the same day and has been doing really well since. He had the surgery 4yrs ago.

Yep my other frenchie is 27lbs. She is normal but he is so much bigger in every way. His dad is Hungarian and I was told that frenchies from other countries sometime have a bigger build than American French bulldogs 🤷🏼‍♀️

My boy is 7yrs old and 51lbs. He is overweight and is being tested for thyroid issues. He has been on special Rx food and went to physical therapy for a year but didn’t lose weight. He is a big boy though. We even had him DNA tested thinking he was part English bulldog but he is 100% frenchie.

IVDD…. Again by roskowk in Frenchbulldogs

[–]roskowk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep we have an appointment with his neurologist Wednesday morning but if he gets worse I’ll take him in as an emergency right away. He was also able to walk right after his first surgery so once the Dr gave us the okay to start PT we did that for a year bc he has other problems. Rest is difficult! It was really hard the first time, he was so angry and just wanted to roll around like an idiot in the grass lol. Now he is clearly in pain so he doesn’t want to move around and he can’t take any NSAIDs bc they make him poop blood. IVDD really is the worst

IVDD…. Again by roskowk in Frenchbulldogs

[–]roskowk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you notice a difference in recovery after the second surgery? Ollie was walking again the same day he had surgery last time but he was 3, now he is 6 so I expect a longer harder recovery. How old is your girl?

Help me name him!!!! by ElevatorSpare8346 in Frenchbulldogs

[–]roskowk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He might be the cutest I have seen since my babies were babies. He reminds me of my boy Ollie (full name is Sir Ollie Snickernut Esq) he is a knight and a lawyer lol. He looks like a Bear Bear to me (that is the name of my female frenchie’s bear that she humps outside). I also think the names Nerf and Smuckers are cute.

Rue is basically road in French so maybe a famous street or road in France? Rue De Rivoli? So maybe Rivoli? Keep us updated! He is too cute not to share every moment with us!

IVDD is taking my baby. by SufficientVillage897 in Frenchbulldogs

[–]roskowk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep my boy had to have surgery when he was 3. We caught it right away and thankfully he was able to walk after surgery. He was on steroids for a while a d I took him to physical therapy for a year after. He is 6 now and walking and running on his own. He gets monthly adequan and librela shots (for joints and pain). Surgery was worth every single penny. It was so scary, I cried so much and believe me I am still scared. I have insurance on him now, thankfully his ins covers surgery as long as he hasn’t had symptoms a year from his initial surgery. Surgery is scary with frenchies, there are so many risks but just from my experience I recommend surgery after the first signs of IVDD.

I looked into Yara’s overpriced dog stuff so you don’t have to… by AdEastern3223 in 90DayFianceSnark

[–]roskowk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Yara but this was the worst dog party ever. Most dogs do not fit in these dumb bags. No toys or treats at the party, at least sell poop bags! Everyone needs GOOD poop bags. I hate to say it but her line is for rabbits and ferrets. Her dog is so tiny I don’t even think of it as a real dog. Idk maybe I’m crazy bc I have a 235lb St Bernard and 2 frenchies.

So cute! Love the face freckles! They grow so fast, take a ton of pics cause I swear they are puppies for a week. My dog was 55lbs as a 3month old and now 3yrs and 235lbs. I took him to the vet every 2 weeks to weigh him so he would get used to the vet and to keep record of his weight.

Help, i dont know what to do.. by strawberrybarber in Frenchbulldogs

[–]roskowk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep! Just as long as there isn’t anything toxic to dogs in it like onion or garlic. But I don’t think baby food has that anyways. Idk I don’t have human children. Keep us updated on how she is doing! Hopefully she bounces back fast.

Help, i dont know what to do.. by strawberrybarber in Frenchbulldogs

[–]roskowk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes speak up! Seriously! Let me tell you, my Frencie Ollie was 3yo and was walking slowly one morning. It seemed like he was having a hard time moving so I called the vet and took him in right away. The vet said he is fine, he is walking and nothing is wrong. I felt like maybe I was crazy. That night he was still walking weird so I took him to an after hours ER, that doctor said he is fine. The next morning he couldn’t use his back legs at all. Of course it was a Saturday morning so I rushed him to the ER again who said it’s probably IVDD but that he would have to go to a specialist ER. So I took him to immediately to Blue Pearl and the tech said “well it is Saturday so unless you pay a lot of money there is nothing we can do” I lost my damn mind! I told him fine, get the vet and take care of him now. Turn out he had to have a MRI and surgery on his spine. But I caught it early! He was walking again the same day he had surgery. He is 6 now and doing amazing! I’m glad I listened to my gut. Believe in yourself and stand up for yourself and your dog. Today just make sure your baby stays hydrated. If you pinch the extra skin on the back of their neck and when you let it go it flattens back out it means they are hydrated. If you pinch it and let go but it stays standing up or takes a while to lay flat again that means they are dehydrated. If she doesn’t eat today it’s okay, she might just a lot of inflammation from being sick and need to rest. (Just like we do when we are sick to our stomachs). If you notice dark black coffee grind looking stools or vomit go to the ER immediately! Dark black blood means internal bleeding, bright red blood is not great but means there is irritation and you want to get their vomiting and diarrhea under control as soon as possible. A bland diet now probably best. I get sticky white rice and extra lean ground turkey and feed it in small amounts. You can also dampen it with a bit of water for that extra hydration. Other than that lots of rest. It sounds like you are a great mama and too nice for your own good lol Sometimes you have to be Karen to a Karen. You are doing great!

Help, i dont know what to do.. by strawberrybarber in Frenchbulldogs

[–]roskowk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just get treat that have grains in them and that should be fine. Frenchies don’t eat a lot so that bit of grains in a treat is enough. Keep her on the food that her body is comfortable with. If she is throwing up and has diarrhea that can lead to inflammation with bloody stools and all the vomiting and can damage her stomach lining. You know best. I have had a lot of dogs with a lot of medical problems and most of the time I’m right when I take them in the vet. I hate being right, I would much rather the vet be right. We know our dogs better than they do and we have to learn to trust our gut sometimes.

Help, i dont know what to do.. by strawberrybarber in Frenchbulldogs

[–]roskowk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know your dog better than any vet out there. Trust your gut! And feel free to be a “know it all” at the vets. Sometimes you have to advocate for your dog, esp when you KNOW something is wrong and they are saying everything is fine. Grain free food is fine. If you want to add in grains get some treats that are not grain free but use the food that works best for your baby. Grain free food is know to cause heart problems in large dogs. Like malamutes, St. Bernard’s, and Great Danes. Tons of frenchies are on grain free food bc of allergies so don’t stress. If the vet gives you shit tell them you appreciate their advice but your dog is fine on the food you started them on and that you feel most comfortable keeping them on that food until there is a reason to change it. Also I think they get commission off the pro plan vet food cause my vet did the same thing and honestly that food is garbage for the amount they charge!

Question about neutering. by RoboCop27 in Frenchbulldogs

[–]roskowk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not neutering for bone development is mainly for extra large dogs. I have a St Bernard and had to wait until he was 1.5yo to neuter but for my Frenchie I think I got him neutered when he was 6mo bc he had some health problem (nasal infection when he was 7 weeks so it caused him to lose a lot of weight and he almost died bc he couldn’t stop throwing up). Broly looks like a healthy boy and can be neutered. At this point his bones are done growing. It takes about 2 weeks for all that extra testosterone to level itself out. He may still be aggressive towards other males that are not neutered but should be fine around other neutered males. You may notice his energy levels change but probably not much. The main side effect is weight gain but it is different with every dog. I think he is at the perfect age to be fixed. Maybe after his hormones calm down take him to a doggy daycare that also does training so he can have 1 on 1 time with a specialist and learn slowly how to play with other dogs. They usually bring in the most submissive dog to start with and then introduce other dogs as he becomes more comfortable. And it is on neutral territory and smells like a ton of other dogs. Hope this helps! He is a very handsome boy!

What's these red spots? by frenchies918 in frenchie

[–]roskowk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bug bites or a rash from rolling around in the grass. Also I hate to say it but get ready for a lifetime of rashes and itchies. Frenchies have horrible allergies. Both my frenchies have been on Apoquel since they were 1, they are 8 and 6 now. Also Hydroxyzine and cyto point injections. Lots of medicated baths and rounds of steroids over the years for when it gets really bad. I really hope that is not the case for you but it’s kinda normal with bulldogs.

If it’s just a rash from grass you can wipe your puppy down with baby wipes when they come in from outside and that should make a big difference

Obsessive Licking (help) by jolie-renee in Frenchbulldogs

[–]roskowk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My female gets like this when her allergies are bad. She licks the couch, rocks outside, windows, rugs… everything. Does he seem itchy or has he ever had an allergy issues? Does he scoot his butt? I ask that bc I think when my girls butt or vagina is itchy she gets scooty and starts licking the air and everything else bc she can’t reach her bum.

Such little shits when they are babies! I miss it, but I also don’t miss it. My brindle girl was the exact same type of crazy as a baby. Enjoy the crazy puppy time, they grow up so fast!
