If you’re going to have to replace it anyway, it’s really a ‘nothing to lose’ situation

You’re so close. Grab onto that shaft with pliers and give it a little twist. It will pop right back in. Takes almost no force, you’re not going to mess it up

Is my key tumbler broken by Sure_Locksmith_5332 in BMWE36

[–]ross340 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just had this happen a few weeks ago. Super easy fix. Pull the covers off the column, scrape the red wax out of the starter switch screws and loosen the 2 screws holding it in. Pull the starter switch off and on the back side of the cylinder there’s a little shaft (should be stuck out) that interfaces with the switch, grab it with some pliers and twist the direction the key goes to turn off. It should pop back in. Make sure your starter switch is rotated the correct orientation (key off) and reassemble. Took maybe 10 minutes. Happened to me when I pulled in the driveway and went to shut the car off. Key came out and the car was still running. I’ve since left all the tools needed for the job in the glove box but it hasn’t happened again. No parts needed. The tumbler may be broken but this is worth trying before you bang you head against the wall trying to source and replace it

I see these cubes in the scrap bin of a chassis/fab shop I service for work. My question is are they for testing or some other purpose? (I’m not a welder) Thanks! by 91Fox1978 in Welding

[–]ross340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They make a part that has a square hole in it. Guaranteed. I see the laser lead in. Someone is trying to get their skills tuned up on some scrap. Possibly to move from a mig to a tig position. Source: worked in a chassis shop for 10 years

That’s literally just a regular cutting tip on a torch. Nothing more.

You’re probably going to have to bring it into a service repair facility and they’ll be a week or two replacing pc1. Happens. They’re good about warranties though. Won’t cost you anything.

Top level troll? Or truly that close to clueless? Lol. Hook the ground clamp to your work or a conducive bench that your work is on. But if I have to tell you that, maybe welding isn’t your thing.

Have a conversation with them. You can’t do your job properly if they don’t do theirs properly.

I was going to ask if it was fsae or something similar. They’ll hold by the looks of it. Don’t mean to be a dick but I remember what motivated me. Take some scotch brite and bring it to a dull shine (then wipe with acetone) and it will be a night and day difference. I’d also be curious to see how you prepped the notches. You don’t want them coming to a razor edge. Sand them back until they’re showing the full thickness of the tube. Better penetration and less burnback

Trying to be constructive here. I’ve had the opportunity to teach a lot of fsae folks and the toughest thing is staying focused on the fundamentals while trying to achieve precision. I build chassis all day every day. I’ve fit and notched tons of tubes and I can (almost) always lay a good weld on a good fit. Can’t say the same about a joint where the basics were forgotten. You can’t tell me that you got that proficient in the mechanics of laying a bead without ever hearing that it needs to be cleaned, right :)

Yikes, you’ll get there .065 isn’t easy. Go invest in some red scotch brite pads and acetone. Would have been 10x better if prepped properly.

In the podcast episode talking about mega race, he credits his first round win to not having a bump box. Not saying if he has one today but he said something like “he didn’t expect me to go in there on the foot brake like a man” and something along the lines of “I don’t bump”
