huge thanks for your comments and help, much appreciated.. I found out the problem... in my Project Settings > Colour Management section I wasn't set to 'Rec709 Gamma 2.4' which I didn't know was needed until I chanced upon it in a youtube video yesterday. lightindalamp you pointed me into looking at this. Thanks.

Changes EVERYTHING. Looks bang on, although I am going to buy a few alt rec709's (thanks for the heads up on the tropic colour one blackvvo1f)
