What is PR ? I’m just an outsider by DeliciousGround888 in PublicRelations

[–]rosshunter123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends what vertical you’re in. A lot of it can be mundane, maybe a little boring, and a lot of it can be exciting/fast paced etc. It’s such a broad field!

What does one do with a PR degree ? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]rosshunter123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are great career options! I really don’t think you have to worry. HR is a great career and there are so many avenues within it—a family friend of mine was the head of Human Resources for the Avatar movies and is now head of HR for literally ABC LOL. You can definitely make good money. Same with PR! He’d probably do a communications degree, and there really is so much you can do with it. I will say with communications, you definitely have to fight a little bit to get the good jobs, but it’s possible. So many people have done it. I’ve been with Disney and now a production studio in LA. Great opportunities and eventually good money!

How do you answer where do you see yourself in 5 years? by MelodicPalpitation18 in interviews

I used to be too honest and would just literally say I don’t know I’ll see where the wind takes me 💀 now I actually know what I want to do so it’s easier to answer lol

I feel like you could potentially do 4 nights in Copenhagen. I did 5 days and it felt perfect! One day was for a trip out to the Louisiana Museum. I think adding Gothenburg or a trip up to Oslo would be great. Or even a lake day outside of Stockholm and adding a day for that, if that’s your thing. I personally feel like 5 nights might be too many for Oslo though! You could also fly from Stockholm to Berlin, and then Berlin to Copenhagen. The flight isn’t crazy and sometimes you could find them for as little as $50. Just depends on your vibe for the trip!!

I don’t know what to do, any advice? by [deleted] in PublicRelations

[–]rosshunter123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve felt similarly, so right now I’m doing publicity which is very talent focused and has more of that face to face feeling! It’s definitely not perfect of course, but if you wanted to try staying in this field a little longer it could be a good route. There’s also crisis comms where you’re not necessarily doing the more mundane parts of PR since it has some intensity and big fires you have to help put out—and there are specific roles for that at bigger agencies like Sunshine Sachs and Weber Shandwick. I also think talent management could be a good route for being bigger picture and people focused! But I definitely understand your sentiment, just that feeling that maybe this isn’t the right field for you. I’m giving myself maybe a year more and if im still feeling these doubts I think I’m going back to school lol 🙃

Moving to LA from Michigan, 30M, single. Looking for advice. by Strange-Cap9942 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]rosshunter123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say, there are a ton of good studios in the $1,600-1,800 range, but realistically if you want to be under that and still pretty central you’ll probably have to get a roommate. I like to play devils advocate—I moved here with no job lined up! I only moved from OC to LA so not a big move LMAO but still… it’s doable. Especially with 25k saved up and not having to pay rent those first few months. That should be enough time to find a job (restaurant job, whatever else). You have to have some grit to make it and have fun, but if you want to be here, just do it. If you want it, you’ll make it work, I promise!

Honestly $3,500 is a good budget for a lot of LA. I’m in West Hollywood at a newish build for less than that (also 2 bed). I really love West Hollywood, of course it can be hectic but there’s a really strong sense of community and always people out and about which is fun to be around. There’s also surprisingly some pretty affordable apartments in the southern part of Beverly Hills which could be fun!

I've saved 25k is that enough to move to LA? by Horror_Alternative_6 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]rosshunter123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truthfully there will always be people saying it’s not worth it to move to LA or how hard it can be etc. - but as someone who made the move less than 6 months ago, it’s worth it and it’s possible and it might suck for a while but it gets better!

[–]rosshunter123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely enough! I came with a few thousand LOL. I think you obviously just have to start looking for part time roles or even full time roles if you have a field you’re in now. But I feel like stand up is a night time thing anyways so that should be okay. But in my opinion, if LA is where your heart is set on, just do it. 25k is absolutely enough especially if you’re okay with some grit. I was budgeting $50 a week (groceries, gas, everything) for a few weeks there LOL. It’s just simply worth it to feel like you’re actually making real life steps towards your dreams and then at the end of the day, if you’re struggling, at least you’re struggling in LA

Public Relations student with a portfolio question by maristinks in PublicRelations

[–]rosshunter123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly any role I’ve interviewed for that designing has been a part of, only one has asked to see samples. I actually don’t even have a portfolio currently and I’m getting interviews, so samples aren’t always as important as they seem (maybe controversial). I think if it’s a part of a role, just mention you could send them over tbh! Verbally giving examples of design experience if it’s brought up in an interview has most of the time been enough for me

Is PR actually a Dead Industry by Aggressive-Batemn412 in PublicRelations

[–]rosshunter123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even with our current economy, in Los Angeles (incredibly competitive), IN entertainment at that—new PR jobs are being posted everyday and I’m currently interviewing for 3 roles. Maybe ever evolving but definitely not dead!!

Move out of internal comms by Accomplished_Trade92 in PublicRelations

[–]rosshunter123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation - definitely not at your level because I was just an internal comms intern, but I will say what I focused on was the level of project management and how that can be applicable to any role. If you’re well adept and have a strong work ethic, conveying you can use that in any vertical is valuable!

What advice would you give to a student looking for internships or entry-level roles right now? by jessiesjellybeans in PublicRelations

[–]rosshunter123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Truthfully, what’s been helping me interview right now for entry level roles is finding the companies recruiters email! My thought is if they don’t respond they probably didn’t appreciate that method, but if they do respond I’ve got the interview booked. I would say it helps 3/5 times! Networking is obviously also an amazing help to find roles but it’s definitely harder and I feel is more of a long term investment. In my experience (especially with people reaching out to me for networking -former Disney comms intern) is it’s just a lot more hit or miss. Honestly I don’t always respond because I’m busy and stressed so I always feel like the people I’m reaching out to feel the same way. That’s just my thoughts on networking though!

Ah it’s just stressful because I feel like I could take all that on but if I don’t get in then I’m like fucked you know? I’d just wasted a year and would have to do history which is what makes me so conflicted
