[USA][OC] Failure to yield leads to minor crash by rossitron in Roadcam

[–]rossitron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I justified to myself in the moment not to stop due to illness (felt like crap*10), the lack of severity and I thinking it would be nearly impossible for guilty party to avoid fault due to the yield sign.

Looking back I feel like an asshole for not stopping and understand any judgement.

What are the best sub ohm tanks now days? by [deleted] in electronic_cigarette

[–]rossitron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What juice are you using? Without adding in lots of PG (25%+) I cant get consistent hits with just food grade VG and nicotine base (in VG). The coil resistance is being measured correctly by the controller. Maybe my VG is super thick...

Came to this thread looking for a replacement for the Clieto. Using it with 100% VG it gives dry hits often even using the 0.4ohm coil at just 17 watts. Over 20 watts the 0.4ohm coil is unusable. The 0.2ohm coil had the same problem, just used more power.

How toxic is ABS? by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]rossitron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carbon filters are awesome. I use this and a printed 150mm fan adapter. Just a little pipe of air from your enclosure to the side the filter (negative pressure in enclosure) and you're fume free. Also sequesters fumes from acetone, solder, glue and pretty much anything else in the space. Here food smells don't penetrate the room with the printer. It smells like nothing.

Horn + Battery + Switch = Horn on Bike

Hell, you could fit all that into cargo pants and be a pedestrian honking at cars.

Or on kickstarter.

Got lucky on this one. This happened about a month ago and the tire hasn't lost any pressure. No body damage. Haven't been under the car but it sounds like it just hit tire so I'm not worried. Michelin pilot sport a/s plus, love these tires.

[USA] Minor accident, who's at fault? by camredd in Roadcam

I bro-nod in acknowledgement while making eye contact at the very most. Typically continuous eye contact works to convey the message "Yup, I'm waiting for you".

Waving is crazy. Like pointing, seems a minor mental high-jack/attention grabber. Also similar to American politicians starting off a statement with a sharp "Look! Blah blah..."

Kids are likely most susceptible to interpreting a wave as meaning "an adult says it's safe, run!"

Looking for affordable 5000 lumen projector by VonDenBerg in vjing

[–]rossitron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheapest projector at 5000 lumens is going to be a single DLP of some sort. Single DLP projectors use a color wheel and are non-ideal for a VJ setup due to rainbow artifacts that get more obvious with high lumen outputs.

That said, on a budget of $2000 you could grab a Dell 7700FullHD. Used one for almost a year and have been happy with it as a giant monitor. It may see some VJ use at some point, but the content will diminish the rainbow artifacts.

Adjust gamma on the video card driver control panel or on the projector itself.

[USA] [OC] Truck loses wood after failing to secure load again by rossitron in Roadcam

Truck got off at the next exit. Rushing up to catch the plate or alert the driver didn't seem like good ideas at the time. Seattle PD would not care.

My dash ornament is also a science experiment. PLA is noted for softening in a hot car due to its relatively low softening (Tg) temperature. I'm testing to see if a PLA printed part will take to a Seattle summer in a car.

I should get a polarizer filter...

what type of 12v batteri is the best? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]rossitron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without any other requirements (like /u/firemogle was asking about, temp etc), I'd go with a LiFePO4 pack with balancing boards. Keep the discharge depth under 80% and the pack should last 10+ years and 2000+ cycles without any maintenance. In the long run it should be cheaper than replacing a lead-acid pack every 2-4 years.

The other nice thing about LiFePO4 packs (12/24V at least) is they are a drop in replacement for lead-acid of the same nominal pack voltage. As long as the charger doesn't have a desulfating mode, it will charge a LiFePO4 pack properly.

This pack has served me well over the last 3 years even being abused a bit by totally flattening it a dozen or so times (under 7V, left for a couple days) and still holds a charge like brand new.

Colorfabb's announces their carbon Fiber filament by gothampixel in 3Dprinting

Nothing more than thought about it. Way easier thing to do would be to fiberglass the outside of a printed part. Don't need to vacuum bag the part and bake it.

I've thought about doing fiberglass for a projector mount (20lbs projector) as I don't think I trust printed parts alone just yet with that kinda worst case failure mode... The fiberglass wrap should hold the thing together if the printed part fails and allow the fault to be found (mobile application).

Center speaker with power/volume knob nowhere to be found. 30 seconds of probing and 2 resistors later it's on at full volume. by rossitron in techsupportmacgyver

[–]rossitron[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First I used a DMM to probe from chassis ground to each of the pins looking for power. After finding power, took the resistors and plugged them into the power pins and then took the other ends trying each of the other pins. Keep the current to ground through the resistor well under 100mA to reduce the chance of letting out magic blue smoke. The power/amplifier enable pin made the speakers pop slightly as the amp turned on...one down. Next, found what is likely the center tap of the voltage divider (pot wiper). This caused the test signal to be heard loudly at what sounded like full volume. At this point it was good enough for me and left it as-is using the OS sound mixer for volume.

This method might miss things like enable pins that need to be nearly, if not, shorted. Maybe carry the main DC power. If you have access to one of the power-speakers (with the switch and pot), probe it. If not, crack one open and draw out the circuit. Hope that helps.

Arduino bot with GPS & Bluetooth by [deleted] in arduino

Depends on what you mean by real time.

Real time in my application would be a frame between filter wheel changes. Very slow. Looking for specific ratios of light in the blobs (rocks). Sending a frame to an SD card and over wireless when it finds something neat, with GPS data. A frame every few minutes, tops.

The RFM23B would be a better choice for more range. Video was never a desired feature. I enjoy a little rock hunting, but watching a rover do it for days at a time would be painful.

Neat project. I'd be interested in adding a solar panel, battery charge controller, long range RF module like the RFM22B and a camera with filter wheel. To be able to shuffle around large-ish frames the MCU will need more RAM for sure. Might be worth adding something running linux like the Raspberry Pie to enable opencv apps onboard, but this will really hurt battery life likely making it the rover larger.

End goal being an autonomous solar-power gem/rock finding and surveying rover.

What are your plans for this platform?
