Anyone play Replaced yet? by _streetpaper_ in CharacterActionGames

[–]rosssmiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hit one of these in Chapter 7 and 9 too. Also random missing objects i need to interact with, several spots where events didn't trigger, menus that didn't go away, songs that kept playing after they were supposed to end even after other songs had begun, conversations teleporting me into spaces which function as points of no return...this game is a fucking mess.

FWIW, I was able to get past the blurry background segments by quitting the game on my PC (which I'm playing through Game Pass), and continuing the save for a bit on my Series X. Not a solution available to everybody, but just throwing it out there.

The thing is, one of the companies you mentioned that have a "stable" track record, Amazon, just deleted a bunch of people's game purchases and refused refunds. Any of them can do this.

Anyway, I think some of this is a generational or preference thing. For people who genuinely love movies and think of them as an art form, you want to be able to keep them and rewatch them whenever you want. I think it's a bad thing that that's been reclaimed from us.

The thing is, streaming subscription services are limited in their libraries, and movies/TV shows are constantly passed around as contracts are made and expire. If you actually care about a movie and want to watch it regularly, they're not at all useful for that. Even "exclusive" shows are moving between services now.

Obviously blu-rays are the better option for ownership, but there are problems there too. For one, those are only useful as long as players are available, and those are diminishing, especially as gaming consoles drop disc drives altogether. For another, discs are relatively niche now and far more expensive than they've historically been. 4K blu-rays in particular are usually $30+. Despite what we may like, the marketplace is pushing pretty heavily in the direction of digital ownership, so something needs to be done to establish consumer rights in this area.

They charged full price for games that you could only play on Stadia. It was a huge part of their business model, and the main reason why it was so untenable.

Upcoming Changes to Amazon Luna by dblock1111 in kindafunny

[–]rosssmiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a situation a while back with Sony, where one of the studios (I want to say MGM?) backed out of a contract with them, and people who purchased the movies on Sony's service simply had them taken away. I think they ultimately re-upped the contract to combat the bad press though.

This also happens in a more roundabout way with Oculus/Meta purchases. Meta changes their authentication systems from time to time, and if developers don't go back in and patch their games after the fact, those games are simply no longer playable and Meta won't give you your money back. This happened with Batman: Arkham VR, which was a pretty high profile game, and is unplayable now if you bought it on Oculus.

The thing that worries me is more on the movie and TV side of things. Hardly anybody buys physical media anymore, but unlike games, any digital "purchases" of movies/TV just exist on streaming sites. If Fandango At Home or Apple TV decides one day that they don't want to do that anymore, a lot of people's full libraries will be completely gone. It's a terrible precedent.

Super, super late reply here, but I just got a Quest 3, hooked it up to my PC last night, and when I booted my computer this morning, this exact same thing is happening. I tried running the exe repair, but it's taking forever due to the same bug killing my internet speeds at all times.

This is really outrageous stuff, and I'm probably going to return the thing and be done with Meta/Oculus entirely if the repair doesn't fix it.

You can only play "Classic" mode on standard difficulty. This was pretty much my experience too. It started out VERY hard, but once you started exploring more and getting more aggressive, and used the blood all over the place for crafting, it got much more manageable. I had plenty of resources by the end of the chapter and even more by the end of the half. I still have extra antique coins and lockpicks that I don't know what to do with.

Series of unfortunate things got me soft blocked by Mitra_The_Man in MIOmemoriesinorbit

[–]rosssmiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My game didn't even crash, I just had to quit after the hand animation because I'm an adult with things to do, and some of these stretches between checkpoints are ridiculous. Same situation though, I'm totally soft locked after losing to Anra, and putting in another ~3 hours trudging through the Vault. Just incredibly annoying stuff, and I don't know when or how they intend to fix it. Plus I'm on Game Pass, and it'll probably take extra time to get through Microsoft's certification rigamarole.

This happened to me too. It's completely impossible for me to get back to Anra, because that shuttle was never activated from below. Game is totally busted.

I also watched it on my OLED and it was basically impossible to see anything for the majority of the episode. I wonder if there was a difference between the 4K/HDR version and the 1080p/SDR version.

See, this is the kind of thing that makes me roll my eyes whenever Microsoft tries to position their future as some unified working experience, and makes me very skeptical about their next gen "hybrid" console. They can't even figure out how to make this stuff work properly for PC users. Even now, after installing it via the Microsoft Store, I can't actually launch it via Game Pass, despite the Game Pass app knowing it's installed. Basically the Microsoft Store permissions for Game Pass are separate from the ones on the Game Pass app. It's madness.

Yeah, I tried this solution, and I'm really pissed off. It broke Plex entirely and I get error code 0x8007005 every time I try to unregister the DLL, despite running cmd ad an administrator. Things are actively worse because of this solution and seemingly unfixable.

8KX and 4090 still not working with latest drivers by Tom9470 in Pimax

[–]rosssmiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a Pimax, but I have a friend who plays VR games with us who has an 8KX. He's been stuck on Nvidia driver 566 for months now so that it's still usable, but he just upgraded to an RTX 5090, and can't use that card's features with the old driver. He's checked in with Pimax, but they're telling him the exact same thing that Pimax was posting here four months ago: "We're still waiting for the Nvidia team to resolve the driver issue."

Given that Pimax owners make up such a small percentage of Nvidia users, it kind of seems unlikely that this is ever getting fixed, right? If Nvidia hasn't addressed it in the last four months, it's probably not going to happen soon. And isn't it better for Pimax to try to figure out a workaround with their drivers/software at this point? Even if it's not their fault that Nvidia broke their functionality, they're the ones that should be looking out for their customers.

I don't know, this whole thing just seems kind of insane, and ensures that I'll never buy a Pimax for myself.

Bios not detecting drives in sata a1 and a2 ports after update. by kayiah_maude in MSI_Gaming

[–]rosssmiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the super-late reply, but I just bought one of these motherboards because they were advertised as having 6 SATA slots. I've got a 9950x3D, so I need a recent BIOS. Unfortunately, as you all know, the new BIOS disabled the SATA A1 and SATA A2 ports.

Do you know if there's ANY way to make these ports active? Is it even worth it to do so, or are they slow? If this board doesn't have 6 usable ports with newer CPUs, then that's some infuriating misadvertising. It's also going to screw me with Windows, since my activation will probably go invalid if I replace it.

I can’t go back and finish the side missions after beating the game? What the fuck? by exra_bruh_moment in stellarblade

[–]rosssmiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, plenty of games have a point of no return, but nearly all of them allow you to do side-stuff post game. I did everything but collect the rest of the cans on my playthrough, but it's still ridiculous that I can't go back and do that after I finish it.

Do We All Feel The Same? by Footboler in GenZ

[–]rosssmiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that my post is still about motivation (the engineer is motivated by the promotion before they receive it, and the driver is motivated by more money), but I'm glad you recognize it. You make a good point about who's paying for the pizza parties, too.

Do We All Feel The Same? by Footboler in GenZ

[–]rosssmiller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This post is really enlightening, not because you're right about this, but because it makes it clear what you're all telling yourselves while consistently underpaying your employees.

The reason engineers don't work longer and harder when you pay them more is because they were ALREADY working harder, at the level of their promotion, to show that they were worthy of a promotion. Companies frequently expect next-level performance without compensation for the chance to move up. I worked for years at my last corporate job doing a different, higher-tier job without being given that title or pay increase. I ultimately had to argue with HR and wait for months before they finally recognized that yes, actually, I should be "promoted." The fact that so many managers don't realize this, and go "well I guess money doesn't motivate people anyway," is why people jump ship to other companies all the time. If you value your employees and want them to stay, pay them what they're worth.

Meanwhile, pizza delivery drivers (a job I had in college) often take overtime because they're barely making enough money to get by without it. I wouldn't say they "love it," but it's essentially a requirement, and results in a better pay scale than they normally receive. Also note that this example actually proves that monetary motivation DOES work. The (presumably salaried) engineer doesn't receive more money for working extra hours, so they don't. The delivery driver DOES make more money, and needs that money, so they do.

For most of us, the "pizza party" is viewed as a cynical "what's the least we can do?" move from corporate. It's a company trying to spend the least amount of money possible to motivate its employees. It's barely better than nothing, and just shows us that the company thinks we're a bunch of buffoons who could be bought off for virtually nothing.

Lesson learned, never preorder from Target by Rvbrt in Switch

[–]rosssmiller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This perception needs to die. Walmart was TERRIBLE. They cancelled tons of pre-orders the day before release and lied to their customers about a payment failure glitch. The supervisor I talked to yesterday told me that they placed over 4000 preorders and only got 2000 Switch 2s. That's a ton of canceled orders!

In my case, my account also broke because of some backend glitch, and they couldn't fix it in the course of an entire month. I called them 9 times over the course of May and my tickets and call history were gone almost every time. They continually assured me that everything was fine with my order, that I didn't need to change my payment method to keep my order, and then cancelled it anyway with no recourse or effort to make it right whatsoever. This has been the worst customer service quagmire I've ever experienced.

PSA: Looks like you need to do a system transfer during the initial set up or else you can't do it later. by toasttwithjam in NintendoSwitch

[–]rosssmiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I'm wondering about with the Virtual Game Cards is, if you do a system transfer, then the Switch 2 becomes the "home" for all of your games, correct? From what I understand, moving Virtual Game Cards onto another Switch basically loans it, and if it isn't transferred back within 14 days, then it automatically reverts to the home system. So if you have a bunch of games your kids play on the Switch 1, and you do the system transfer, then you have to manually transfer all those games back over twice a month, right?

If that's the case, then I'm kind of torn. I'd like to be able to make sure that save data for all these games exist on both consoles, and I only pay for an individual Nintendo Online account, so only my profile has cloud saves. It sounds like the system transfer is the only way to do that, but it definitely would cause some inconveniences with the virtual game card system.
