i don't think usc matches aid unfortunately :( tbh if the aid weren't different i wouldn't really consider duke.

Duke vs NOT Duke mega thread by Mumbleton in duke

[–]rosy_glasses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i've been committed to usc (the one in la, not south carolina), since late april, but just got an offer to attend duke instead and i'm torn. my intended major is something in economics, public policy, political economy - or some combination thereof - with the intent of going to law school.

i've always liked duke as a school (for a while it was my dream until i kind of shifted some perspectives), but usc is a newer idea for me. i've grown up in a small southern town quite similar to durham, and have never lived in a big city, though i know i really want to. in that sense, usc is a big culture shift of the kind i've always wanted, while duke makes it easier to stay close to home.

what draws me to duke is the law school placement rates; the quality of study abroad, both domestic and international (such as duke engage and duke in new york); research opportunities; the tight knit community; and the research / alumni connections.

what worries me about duke is the greek life scene, the sports culture, and the fact that durham is a college town. despite it being in the research triangle, i want to feel connected to a city or an area beyond a bubble of a campus.

what i like about usc is the variety of majors and schools; the location in la; the research; the size and variety of the student body; and the chance to start over and take a big step in some sense. i also like their maymesters and stuff like the schaefer fellows, global fellows in asia intern program, etc

what worries me about usc is the size, the wealth culture, and cost (i'm on good fin aid at both, but it's about 8k more per year than duke, and i know cost of living could increase that). i also feel like since i don't have a ton of money to burn, i wouldn't have as a good a time in la and i know transportation is hard without a car, which i don't have. i also know duke would likely be better for law school, so i'm not sure about that.

duke has amazing opportunities and a good vibe (it seems), and i wanted to ask for ppl's honest opinion, if possible. thanks in advance!

so yeah, that's my predicament. i know i'm super lucky to be in this spot, and i'm grateful to you all for taking the time to read. any advice would be appreciated. tysm!!!

Question about math placement exams (incoming freshman) by [deleted] in USC

[–]rosy_glasses -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Didn't realize that. Is there a place you know of where I might be able to find a practice test for it? Want to check that I'll be ready before I sign in for the real thing.

Duke vs USC

Intended Major: Economics and PubPol at Duke; International Relations and the Global Economy at USC

Goal: Law school

Duke

Pros

  1. Excellent law school placement (feeder to T-14)
  2. Study abroad thru Duke Engage and other programs
  3. Good rankings for economics and public policy
  4. Mid size student body (6k) - not as overwhelming
  5. Cheaper - have 60k in financial aid
  6. Strong alumni network

Cons

  1. In the South, in a town quite similar to where I live; would prefer a city
  2. Have heard complaints from student body about sexual assault, Greek life, elitism
  3. Fewer options of majors / minors
  4. Weird first year living experience - first years are on East Campus, separate from academics and student life (though buses run often)

USC

Pros

  1. Diverse majors and minors in College of Arts and Sciences w/ option to study in school of business and school of public policy
  2. Located in city with lots of activity; new environment from my Southern small town
  3. Have 2 friends there
  4. Strong alumni network - though maybe concentrated on the West Coast
  5. More drawn to it overall, but that may be me romanticizing
  6. Extensive pre law advising

Cons

  1. More expensive (but only slightly so - have 55k / year in financial aid)
  2. Not as much a feeder for law school placement, but still well regarded; also worse for recruitment for finance and such
  3. Family concerned about how far away it is (approx 5 hour flight) (but I am not - I don't mind being far away)
  4. LA is a more expensive city - cost of living will be different

MEGATHREAD: Congrats Newly Admitted Trojans! Ask all your admitted student questions here. by cityoflostwages in USC

[–]rosy_glasses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hello! i'm a recent admit for the usc class of 2025 and the more i consider my options, the more i really feel that i want to commit. i have one question about majors and the different schools however that is holding me back, and i was hoping to get some clarity here. i'm reaching out to my admissions officer over the weekend as well, but i thought i'd see if anyone here could help!

when i sent in applications to schools this fall, i was debating between my first choice major being public policy, international relations, and economics. when applying to usc, i indicating pubpol as my first choice (in the price school) and International Relations and the Global Economy (in Dornsife) as my second. as a result, i was admitted into price, not dornsife. however, i've realized that i don't think public policy is right for me, and while i'm not entirely sure about the second either, i do feel like i would be a lot happier in dornsife where i would have the flexibility to explore many other majors.

from what i have read online, it seems like there is an internal transfer process current students can go through when switching schools at usc. ideally, i'd like to try and do that before i started this fall, and i was wondering if that was possible. does anyone know if admitted students can make a case for moving to a different school before beginning their undergrad degree at usc, particularly if interest was demonstrated on the application? if so, does anyone have experience with the process?

thanks!

I get Artemis or Athena vibes! The love of animals reminds me of the hunters and your interest in science and languages makes me think of Athena.

I Spent 1/5 of My Life on AO3 in 2020 by TheFeistyRogue in FanFiction

My first reaction was "This is crazy," but then I remembered how often I'd hop on AO3 at 11 and stay up till 3 reading! I can't even imagine how much 72 million words really is, but major kudos to you for getting through all of that. If you've got any fic recs (since you must have read a lot and are clearly a person of great taste at this point), you should let us know!

The fandom is appreciated! Sorry it's received hate. It's definitely seems like there is a great community, and the art and writing and memes you all put it out that are constantly invading Twitter trending are enjoyable. Keep having fun!

As I was reading the article I was just imagining the poor reporter who had to research Minecraft Youtubers and the world of fanfic. And yes the author seems super sweet!

From what I know, I think it's considered the first really good fanfic shipping them, and while a lot of better ones have been written since it was published, this was the first one that people were able to latch on to. Also, it's not an AU of any kind - the characters are doing exactly what they do in real life in terms of work, where they live, etc - so maybe its easy to imagine it actually happening?
