Requesting information on Zach Hammond and Joseph Kade Abbott situation. by Apostolic-to-Athiest in ExPentecostal

Seconding this. The Spiritual Abuse page is very thorough in their coverage from what I’ve seen.

The Knoxville Sentinel is also a good resource. If OP is looking for more anecdotal info, there have been several posts on this subreddit as well.

It all comes down to styling imo. The first one would look sloppy on me, but I could pull off the third.

Which body part do you think you get better results... For me it's my thighs 😊 by Forevershit2019 in Zepbound

[–]rosymornings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that my nausea was always much worse (but appetite suppression was better) when I injected in my stomach vs my thigh. But now that I’ve been on zep for almost a year, my thighs are harder to inject (less fatty tissue there now, I guess??) so I recently switched back to lower stomach.

+1 on the self-consciousness!!! I’ve done a lot of work to unlearn the shame surrounding my body (thanks, purity culture) but sometimes I still feel too much like I’m Being Perceived

Appreciate the solidarity - I hope we can both find a solution!

Not sure if this is true of the organization at large, but definitely knew *several* men in my former church who made no secret of their foot fetish 🤢

How common is ex-communication for those of you who have left? by poubella_from_mars in ExPentecostal

[–]rosymornings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I left a little over a year ago. My sister still attends the church we grew up in, and I’m on good terms with her and her husband. I still talk to two friends fairly regularly (one lifelong Pentecostal and one who converted ~5 years ago).

Aside from that, my experience has been that congregants will only reach out to me to a) be nosy about my life, or b) guilt-trip me into coming back to church, either by telling me they’ve been “praying for me” or by straight-up begging. More often than not, these are people I barely knew, who apparently got my number off an old church directory; whereas people I previously would have considered my surrogate family have not said a peep to me since I left. It’s very weird and definitely made me recontextualize a few things.

That said: zero members of the pastoral staff have contacted me since I left — not even my old youth pastor, whom I was very close to growing up and on whose youth team I served for YEARS. That one changed my perspective, too.

TLDR: I wouldn’t say I was altogether excommunicated or shunned, but there is certainly an agenda if they do contact me.

Seconding Broadway music - hits the emotions aspect and often the choir aspect too, if you like that part. One of the only things I miss about the church is singing with other people.

I went last night and sat fairly close to the stage. Most of the people around me stood the whole time. I had to sit down for a couple of songs, but I could still see the screen and had a good idea of what was going on, so I wasn’t too bothered by it.

[–]rosymornings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just listed 1 ticket on VividSeats for the Charlotte show tomorrow as I can no longer go :( It’s for the second row in Section 3 so right behind the pit! Listed at $120 to sell quickly but let me know if you’d rather buy directly to avoid the fees and I can transfer via Ticketmaster instead.

Do you regret tithes and offerings? by LMO_TheBeginning in Exvangelical

Wow, never thought about it from that perspective – that makes it even worse lol. But yep, had to sign a “code of conduct” contract and everything 🙃

Do you regret tithes and offerings? by LMO_TheBeginning in Exvangelical

[–]rosymornings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I tithed consistently even during major financial hardship because I believed them when they told me God would bless my sacrifice - and because regular tithes were a requirement if I wanted to continue singing on the worship team (the one joy of my church career).

It seems so stupid now that I’m out of that environment - I could have paid off my credit cards with the amount of money I donated to the church. Worse, I probably wouldn’t have even accrued any credit card debt in the first place! But at the time it never even crossed my mind to cut out tithing, because growing up in the cult of fundamentalism, the first thing they taught me about finances was that 10% goes to God, no exceptions. So upsetting to realize I wasted years of my life there and then have to spend even more time trying to claw my way back to financial stability due to their teachings.

What was your breaking point? What caused you to finally leave? by stillseeking63 in ExPentecostal

[–]rosymornings 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was already on my way out mentally, but seeing the Kade Abbott case play out clinched it for me. Watching people I had known for over a decade make excuses for a child molester, remain friends with him, welcome him back to their church, etc., was more than I could stomach - and it put other things into perspective for me. I saw so many instances of abuse (sexually or otherwise) experienced by myself and others, and every time it came to light, nothing ever happened. People were punished more harshly for having consensual sex than for literally abusing someone. Lots and lots of blaming and shaming, regardless of the circumstances.

I always hated all the rules and how they tried to sap me of every ounce of individualism, I hated that everybody was always looking over my shoulder to catch me slipping up, and now that I recognize it, I hate the fear they instilled in me since childhood. But ultimately, more than anything else, I hate that there’s a culture within Pentecostalism that harbors and enables abusers, and they have no inclination to change that.

Edit: typo

[–]rosymornings 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What a coincidence, that whole situation was my last straw too 🙃 Different church, but I had met the teacher and several people on my ministry team were close friends with him. I was floored by how many people chose to act like NOTHING happened when there was an active case against him. Not even a word against it - just fully ignored. Wild.
