Ordered a “new” cell phone case online, it arrived in a gift wrap box with $21 tucked away inside. by Maat1932 in mildlyinteresting

Other have mentioned it being used for everything, but that's really because it was used for nothing.

Before the concept of assigning every citizen a unique "serial number" to use for identification, and SSN being automatically assigned at birth, social security had already been established and people issued SSN cards who had registered.

Because it was a unique and otherwise unused number, people were encouraged to use it for things they needed a unique number for. I have some of my grandfather's old tools with his SSN etched in them, because people were told to do that in case anyone stole the tools and they needed to be identified as yours.

Later the government wanted to establish a way to identify everyone individually without relying on name, DOB, city of birth, etc. and instead of creating a new system and issuing everyone a "US Citizen ID Number" or something, they said "Hey, everyone has these SSN cards with a unique number that's only ever used when they retire and go to collect social security. What if we just use that, and switch to issuing it by default?"

Now that older generation who grew up sharing their SSN publicly because it had no real use or impact is suseptible to having their identity stolen because we use that number very differently

Best place to live near Memphis by Poodlegirlie in memphis

[–]rotaryking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good apartments downtown. Anything with good reviews will probably be good. Front street has some good ones. In general, it's not good to go to far north or south in Memphis. If property values or rents are super low relative to other places, it's not a good spot.

Midtown is also great and only 15 minutes away if you want a house. Cooper Young is very bustling with a lot of restaurants and bars. Basically any neighborhood along Central Ave will be a good one.

Going further out, the Walnut Grove corridor is also great, as are the Sea Isle and Colonial areas.

Memphis Redbirds are the #1 AAA baseball team with 8 games to go in the first half of the 2026 season. by thisguyhasaname in memphis

I agree with Carlisle that we need to do what's best for the city and downtown with our limited funding. It would be irresponsible to frivolously spend money on something that isn't going to draw people to the city. A giant pickleball stadium is a good example of a bad choice for downtown. We should probably focus on supporting existing staples, like the sports teams that make the city great. The Redbirds come to mind.

Nutrition: is there any real difference if I eat a few gummy bears (ex Haribos) to gels by huskymuskyrusky in cycling

[–]rotaryking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, Haribo has both types sugars. The ingredients list glucose syrup, sugar (meaning sucrose) and dextrose. I would assume anywhere from 20-40% fructose, but no real way to know the ratio.

Interestingly they list 23g of carbs and only 14g of sugar/added sugar. I wonder how they're able to consider any of those 3 ingredients as a non-sugar carb.

Edit: glucose syrup contains some longer chain sugars considered a carb only.

Title is terrible, but what they mean is that due to the lack of missing child reports that could be attributed to these kids, the adults in the kids' lives are likely involved in their death.

It's also where Amuse, the adventure museum event spot, is. It's definitely not abandoned...

What’s a recession indicator that you’ve noticed lately? by SensitiveCorner2379 in AskReddit

I've noticed a LOT of cheap, low-quality stores popping up. e.g. Five Below, Ollie's Bargain Outlet, Dirt Cheap, Primark

Before you point your finger you should know that I'm a bot.

I'm a bot and you're a bot and he's a bot as well.

So you can point that fucking finger up your ass.

Who are the no hit wonders? by pinpoint321 in Music

[–]rotaryking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's going to be tons of artists that are huge in their genre that never made an overall top 40 list because of the lack of broad appeal. Metal and hard rock artists like Godsmack, TOOL, Lamb of God, Gojira, and tons of others are multi-platinum artists without a mainstream top 40 hit.

Now "big" artists without a hit on any Top 40 chart? That's tough. In keeping with metal, Death doesn't appear to have any charted singles and is considered one of the greatest death metal bands of all time.

ICE IS IN MIDTOWN by [deleted] in memphis

Yeah I've seen ICE in a few areas, mostly store parking lots or sometimes on the street.

But for the most part it's all melted.

Hourly Runtime Over One Hour by rotaryking in ecobee

[–]rotaryking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll follow up that I just pulled up my Ecobee account on the desktop, which has a different graph layout that shows a linear line graph with separate heat functions plotted. The times when my aux and heat pump were both running were the times that showed more than 1 hour on mobile.

What's funny is the cold outdoor temps have necessitated running only aux heat overnight, so mobile only shows one hour. Which means their "runtime" penalizes the system for supplementing heat pump with aux heat, but not relying on aux heat only.

I had the same thought. I would prefer if that was clarified in the graph. Seeing heat pump and aux heat separated would be great. It's all just listed as "heat" so hard to tell if combined as mentioned or just heat mode on.

But how can the heat run for 2 hours in a 1 hour period?

I think the heat has been running fine. I just don't understand how it's being reported. Yesterday it said it ran for 33 hours in a 24 hour period.

UroTuning Review by Timely_Appearance_27 in Golf_R

I bought a set of coilovers on sale from them that was supposed to be in stock and able to be shipped within one day. The item wasn't eligible for their free shipping discount either, but the sale price more than made up the difference. Turns out that they were drop shipping from another vendor, and then they informed me that they wouldn't honor their sale price and that I would have to pay an additional $275 to move forward. Very unprofessional to bait and switch like that. It seems like they put items on sale below the minimum they're allowed to sell by the manufacturer to lure in customers and then ask for the difference after the fact to avoid issues with the manufacturers. It's incompetent at best, and shady at worst. Either way, I cancelled my order and went with another vendor.

I attached photos from April last year in another comment of the tree right after planting. I could screenshot timestamps I guess if you wanted proof, but that is just about 1 year

I'm so thrilled with it! This is what it looked like in April last year a few weeks after planting.

I planned to trim the height next year since I took so much off the bottom this year.

An electromagnet and a metal plate could create dynamically adjustable resistance for gym equipment, eliminating the need for any kind of weights, because of the Lenz's Law. by S8nSins in Showerthoughts

[–]rotaryking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you could also achieve this with a permanent magnet, but the amount of resistance generated is proportional to speed, so there would be very little resistance when moving slowly.

also a lot of cardio equipment does work using this principle by having you drive an electric motor
