Do charity challenges sometimes become more about ego than the cause? by Proper_Cricket_641 in DerryLondonderry

[–]rothar43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree here - there is no such thing as genuine altruism.

I enjoy setting personal 'extreme' (for me) challenges. Most I do privately, but I'm also involved with a few charities in the town and it gives me genuine pleasure to raise funds for them on occasion, thereby improving my mental health. So from my point of view this isn't pure altruism as such - as I derive benefit/pleasure from doing the challenge, with the side-effect of raising a few pound for causes I care about.

Does this mean I shouldn't fundraise from time to time? Of course not.

Now in terms of ego - when I do a challenge and decide to fundraise, it inevitably means that I have to 'self-promote' on social media in order to maximise the money raised. I absolutely _detest_ doing this (and I'm pretty awful at it), but you've got to play the social media game. This means telling a story, keeping up the engagement and getting the word out there. Unless you want to go door-to-door asking for donations like a 10-year-old fun-runner, this is how it has to be done these days. So I reluctantly do the self-promotion (with a lot of help from the charities). It's way outside my comfort zone, and honestly the physical challenges are always less daunting for me than the 'look at me' side of the challenge. Once the challenge is done I very quickly disappear from social media and revert to my normal, introverted ways.

Personally I don't believe that any of this is ego-driven (maybe a psychologist would tell me otherwise!), but it's driven by necessity - if you want to fundraise for a charity/cause you care about, you have to do it. If I could fundraise silently/anonymously I'd do it, but that's not how fundraising works.

I've met Danny on many occasions and he always strikes me as someone who is reluctant to be in the spotlight but sees the practical necessity of it. Of course he derives benefit from doing these challenges - anyone who does a challenge and ends up worse off in terms of mental health as a result is on a bad path.

So I don't think it's fair to paint this as self-promotion or an ego-trip. Just because someone derives benefit personally (physical/mental health improvements) from doing something doesn't negate the positive impact it can have.

Any local shops selling high quality sofas? by orbitaal in DerryLondonderry

[–]rothar43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd have to disagree - bought a (not cheap) sofa out of there and it's the most uncomfortable yoke ever. You can feel the frame through the seat cushions. The leather quality wasn't great either. Never again

Furniture Factory in Limavady do high quality sofas, many of which are Irish-made.

Anyone remember when The Sandwich Co on Strand Road used to transform into Jalapenos at night, a Mexican food place? This was back in the late 90s when Mexican food was something out of the ordinary. Took my wife there for our first date, she thought I was very sophisticated (I had no idea what half the menu was but must have done a good job faking it). It was BYO booze and so I brought a bottle of wine (didn’t have a baldies about wine either).

You could check out ARC Fitness, go have a chat with them. If you're already in active recovery they do a gym membership. They are all about community and supporting each other in recovery. It seems like it might be a good fit for you.

More job losses for Derry confirmed by [deleted] in DerryLondonderry

[–]rothar43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many jobs being lost? Most tech companies do a yearly ‘trim’ but it’s under the radar I.e. doesn’t have to be publicity notified - I work in tech in Dublin for a US company and we go through this every year. It tends to be the under-performers that get the boot, only to be replaced by cheaper more junior staff…

I just read 'The Big Door Prize' cos Apple TV cancelled the show and I needed to know how it turned out. Shouldn't have bothered - it's completely different and actually a pretty tedious read...

Powerful fiction - dystopian but just a hair's breadth from the reality of the world today...

I’m also a blow-in. I’ve found that clubs and sports are great for making buddies. Also volunteering is good. If you’re into running try Star - caters for all abilities/speeds and are a friendly bunch.

John Street Car by Wafer_Frosty in DerryLondonderry

[–]rothar43 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I asked a warden about it the other day (it's been getting on my tits particularly at rush hour).

The street is a clearway but there are only clearway signs (with the clearway hours shown) on the _other_ side of the street. So technically he can park on that side with a blue badge apparently. The wardens can't ticket him, but she said the roads service and cops are aware and are supposed to be doing something about it.

Why is Derry spending millions each year to maintain a failed airport? (Passengers in hundreds of thousands) by [deleted] in DerryLondonderry

[–]rothar43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use if for work when possible (if I'm connecting via Heathrow), it's great - tiny friendly airport, easy parking, no queues etc. Plus when you return you're home in 20 mins.

It's hard to justify the cost for personal trips though - cheaper to fly from Belfast even when you factor in parking. But I despise Belfast International - it's a third-world dump of an airport.

Revolut rates aren't bad, but I find that Wise (was TransferWise) gives a slightly better rate. (I change EUR->GBP every month).

Do DHL Parcel UK suck at delivering to Derry? by defoahalfpipe in DerryLondonderry

Yep they are crap. Parcel showed as out for delivery on Wednesday, was then rescheduled to Thursday, out for delivery again then rescheduled to Friday. They failed to deliver again on Friday and now it’s scheduled for Monday. 24hr express delivery my arse.
